Bulls VP John Paxson Says Derrick Rose Was Unfairly Criticized

According to John Paxson, the Chicago Bulls VP of basketball operations, Derrick Rose will be back stronger than ever next season. Paxson also claims that the young superstar faced an unfair and brutal amount of criticism from fans and media for siitting out the year due to a knee injury. Per the Chicago Tribune (via WSCR-AM 670): “‘It’s the way of the world now, the social media, everything that goes on,’ Paxson said. ‘Everybody wants to point a finger and blame and accuse and that kind of stuff. And the reality is, Derrick and us, we were all on the same page from the beginning. If he was ready to play mentally and physically, he was going to play. It didn’t happen this year.’ Paxson said Rose will continue his rehab work during the offseason and will be an even better player when he returns as a result. ‘There’s no question in my mind that the time he spent on his body this past year was the best thing he’s ever done because I think he’s learned that, to compete in an NBA season and absorb the physical contact that he does, what he’s done during this rehab has benefitted him greatly. I think it’s going to make him better and stronger. We’re fortunate that we’ve got a kid who is still young and is dedicated to the job and wants to continue being a great player. I think he’s going to come back bigger, stronger, better than ever.’ [...] Paxson likened Rose’s conditioning work to what Michael Jordan did under the direction of trainer Tim Grover. ‘I saw Michael pay attention to his body,’ said Paxson, a key component on the Bulls’ first three-peat teams. ‘He had kind of like this little breakfast club for a number of years that he’d get up and lift with and that type of thing. You look at (Rose) now, he’s stronger, he’s thicker … when he shoots the basketball pregame, he’s shooting it so much easier than he ever has and I think it’s because of the strength he’s gained over the last year.’”

“At this point, we are listing Derrick as year-to-year.”

“If he was ready to play mentally and physically…” Yeah, we aren’t criticizing him for the physical part of his recovery.

and might sit out if they feel like they can’t beat miami that year

I don’t think most logical basketball viewers would have had a problem with him sitting out if they didn’t constantly see him during warmups dunking only to be seen in a suit for the full 48. If he can play then play if he can’t he can’t but don’t string us along.

he didn’t string anyone along. The Bulls & ESPN strung everyone along. They knew Derrick Rose was sitting out the whole year in about February. Sh*t, I knew that. Had been told by multiple people. Everyone just ignores that, because ESPN kept speculating. And apparently they are trustworthy.

I should’ve been more specific. I didn’t mean to impy that Rose was the culprit of deception. I totally agree it was the Bulls & ESPN.

Bulls screwed it up. His fans got duped by the Bulls organization and it started the minute they let everyone know that their doctors cleared him. Same doctors who cleared Rose after every injury he had last season and played with. Same doctors who told Deng he could play with a fracture in his leg in 09. Same doctors who cleared Omer Asik to play with a broken leg in the playoffs in 2011. D-Rose is going to come back better than he was before he left. Stronger, better shooter, able to take contact better. He was right to listen to himself regardless of what team doctors told him. A summer of working out in LA with Westbrook and scrimmaging other players will have him ready to go (whenever Russell’s knee heals).

Some Derrick Rose memes are funny though

Why are we still talking about this?

  • The Seed

I have lost a little respect for Rose, these NBA players now dap each other during games and sit out games worrying about their end career. LOL

  • GMR

All of that talk about being tough b/c he’s from the south side of chicago kinda went flying out of the window when America saw the smallest guy in the NBA puking in a bucket in the middle of a TO and Rose sitting there with a suit on – physically ready to go – like “naaaahhhh man I ain’t playing”.

He did the right thing all along. Sold him some shoes in the process. I expect him to stick it to anybody off the pick. That guy is hella fun to watch!!

Let’s compare sickness to a player coming back from a torn ACL and getting past the mental hurdle who has to carry the offensive load of a team almost by himself. Because they’re easily comparable.

  • Judah1012

Because worrying about your career after seeing other star players come back too soon is ridiculous.

Only someone who is a loser at life could possibly think the phrase “worrying about their career” is an insult. Thanks for the insight on your life.
