Chicago Bulls Stun Miami Heat in Game 1

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Much like when Miami rolled into Chicago riding a 27-game winning streak back in March, there was no reason to believe the severely depleted Bulls stood a chance against the defending NBA Champs last night in Game 1.

As usual, these ever-resilient Bulls proved everyone wrong, and shockingly took the series opener. Behind Nate Robinson’s 27 points and 9 assists, Chicago pulled off the 93-86 stunner.

Per the Daily Herald:

Since Feb. 3, the Heat is 40-1 against the rest of the NBA, but 1-2 against the Bulls. Robinson led all scorers with 27 points and scored the Bulls’ final 7, hitting the go-ahead jumper from the top of the key with 1:18 remaining. After the game, he talked about the matchup with Allen.

“I looked up to Ray for the majority of my childhood,” said Robinson, a Seattle native. “He played for the Sonics. I started doing a lot of shooting drills with him. I was in Boston with him. I know Ray. But my main objective was just to attack. Coach always says, ‘Make the bigs do their job.’ If they come over and block it, they block it. I was going to be aggressive. I waved Jo off because I didn’t want them to switch on the pick and roll with LeBron (James). I was like, ‘No, go back and we’ll see what happens here.’ I ended up making the layup.”

Robinson’s teammates were inspired by the little fella’s gutsy play — Joakim Noah argued that Nate is the greatest 6-foot-and-under player in NBA history — but they realize they have a very long way to go against Miami.

The Heat, rusty after eight days of rest, played sluggishly for much of Game 1. They are expected, of course, to respond with a vengeance.

While no reasonable observer is prepared to give the Chicago Bulls a real chance to win this series, it’s clear that things are going to be much more competitive than anyone had anticipated.

Now that’s a team. Unbelievable will and determination by this Bulls team.

Up 16 with four minutes left in the game. Championship experience > Young team. Curry has to use his 3rd quarter heroics in the 4th.

  • JetSkiJohnson

Not a really a stun. Chicago plays great defense and i hope they win the series.

  • Max

It’s been quite a while since I saw Lebron as bad as he was the first half.
I actually expected a monster game from him because of the MVP award being handed to him last night.

We won the 1st game in 2011 too but look how that turned out

  • pposse

What better way to coronate King James?! Good work, I hope this Chicago Bulls team stays together for a loong time!

  • thetruth

    wrong article

  • pposse

as long as we keep the tempo the way it is we will be alright!

  • jmm

Bulls played with incredible guts, but I feel like they got this win because they hit tough shots and Miami missed open ones. Hope they get the series, but I think now that the Heat have shaken some rust they’re probably going to be a lot sharper going forth.

  • huami

Nate is the greatest 6-foot-and-under player in NBA history?? I’d pick AI in a heartbeat.

  • MUBWAR

loooool actually it is. heat shooting 38% from the field and 28% from deep is an anomaly. just like nate outscoring lebron is. so don’t get too high up

  • JetSkiJohnson

They beat Miami before though.. Plus they have a system.

  • Dagger

You can quantify and analyze statistics and consider X’s and O’s all you want, but sometimes a game just boils down to heart and determination. Respect to the Bulls. Now it’s up to the Heat to match that grit, or they could actually get bounced in the second round.

  • macaroni

    Lmaoo

  • pposse

    AI is 6’1″

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Bulls in 4!!!!

  • robb

That’s a team and a coach that I really respect. No excuses, just hard work. And Nate… man, that guy’s a tough minded individual. Unfortunately I think that’s the only game they’ll win. The Heat rested for a week and are a little bit out of sync, while the Bulls just ended a 7 game series. When the Heat get their rhythm back it’s over, but the Bulls are gonna fight, there’s no question.

  • ThaWindy

Yo that Jimmy Butler kid is pretty nice.
    Hes a really smart defender.
I love to watch him beat players to the spot by running at an angle instead of a straight line.

  • keyon dooling

not in the playoffs before, when the Heat usually pick up and match the Bulls intensity. Didn’t happen last night and let the Bulls steal one on Biscayne Blvd

  • huami

he isn’t. He is 6’0 flat with his shoes on.

  • huami

Noah also categorized Nate in the “6 ft and under” guards

  • http://twitter.com/RapistOnBail Rapist on BAIL

Be funny if they steal Game 2 too. If Bulls get Deng and Hinrich back, there is no way the Heat will win the next 4 games straight. Get real, bandwagoner! Sorry, but the Heat are going to have to earn this series. And it looks like the refs are going to let them play too.

If there’s one team in the NBA that can knock the Heat off, its Chicago! Other than that, Heat will repeat if they get pass them.

no way 6′ with sneakers on ! I would pick Isiaiah thomas as top countender in this category!

  • Slick ric

Nothing wrong with him hoping clown.

  • http://twitter.com/RapistOnBail Rapist on BAIL

AI is 6’0 in shoes. Nate is listed at 5’9 but I met him recently in Chicago and my 5’7 girlfriend was the same height as him and she was wearing Jordan 13′s, no heels, and so was he.

  • http://twitter.com/RapistOnBail Rapist on BAIL

Jimmy Butler is a rising star. For a 30th pick, he developed into a elite defender of multiple positions, great rebounder, and a rapid-improving offensive player.

Did a great job on Lebron makin him work. And held Wade to only 14 points. How could you not respect this Bulls team? Even if you are bandwagon success Heat fan, give credit.

  • LP @ThisisEther

A full strength HOME team w/ MVP , and 3 of the top 25 players in the league vs. a team at 50%, missing starters, and a 5’8 guy running the point….etc etc ….I think that’s a STUNNER…. I’m a Bulls fan, and I’m stunned……..LeBron’s nonchalant attitude is why they loss…. You’re better than that, Lebron…Its Playoff time…2nd round…

  • LP @ThisisEther

can’t wait to see Butler and Rose in the Backcourt…

  • LP @ThisisEther

For a second, I thought…I thought…I thought you said “My girl was wearing Jordan heels….”… lol….

  • robb

lol, no I’m no bandwagoner but the Heat are a great team and the Bulls are depleted, they can’t win a series against Miami, no matter how big their hearts are and no matter how hard they play. It would be cool if they could beat the Heat, but I just don’t see how.

  • robb

yeah, he looked the same height as Spud webb when he jumped over him and Spud is 5’7 as well.

  • http://twitter.com/RapistOnBail Rapist on BAIL

I wasn’t talkin to you, bro! You must have multiple screen names lol. And I I said if “Deng and Hinrich returns” this series will be extended no doubt. But I still wouldnt count da Bulls out depleted or not. I think they have a chance. Its all on the refs and if they just let the two teams play with no phantom calls for Wade and LeChoke.

On paper, the heat “should” win this series. Be funny if Bulls steal game 2 tho…

  • Eric N. Ellington

If you are a Heat Bandwagoner, go ahead and fill out the form on my site. If you are truly a Heat fan, we must remain patient. It’s only one game in a very long series.

  • huami

No disrespect to nate. I know the NBA tends to exaggerate the players’ height. I’m just saying, if I were to pick a guard that is 6 ft and below, I’d choose AI.

  • huami

Good choice. Matter of preference. Isiah and iverson. 2 of the greatest small men in the history of the NBA

  • JetSkiJohnson

you must not recognize the Bulls strengths on defense. They force players into isolation towards the baseline and then will sometimes eventually. Its not surprising that their players had an “off” night. Plus Gibson always played good defense on Bosh and Butler will make Lebron work.

  • Caboose

Come on. Nate, Bellinelli, Butler, Gibson, and Noah beating a team with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh is a stunner. Just stop.

  • underdog

    This series will be great.

  • initbruv

    Rapist on BAIL?

  • robb

lol I don’t know WTF happened. Anyway I’ll be rooting for the Bulls for sure

  • LP @ThisisEther

I recognize my Bulls strength on Defense, but its the offense I’m worried about… I still don’t know where the offense came from… But The Bulls have stopped those insane fast break points that Miami runs off 12pts at a time… Those high flying, no look, 3/4 court , backbreaking alley oop dunks that they love….That’s helping. In any event, I’m happy.

  • spit hot fiyah

just wanted it more, plain and simple.

  • pposse

damn foreal? If thats the case, Noah clearly said what he said without thinking Iverson was 6ft or under. I always thought the NBA listed him at 6’1″

  • huami

    He isn’t. AI is.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

Miami is weak on the inside. So Birdman better step up because you can’t count on Bosh. Bosh is too nice on the inside.

  • The Seed

LIke I said, Bulls in 6. If Robinson average close to 30 a game, they win in 5. BOOK IT!!

  • Caboose

Are you REALLY the person to be making fun of screen names?

  • Caboose

I love seeing all the random Bulls fans spring up.
