Chris Paul Mad at the Clippers He Was Blamed for Vinny Del Negro Firing

Everyone knows that the LA Clippers decided to let head coach Vinny Del Negro go in a desperate attempt to retain Chris Paul. Hell, even the team’s owner basically admitted as much, and VDN certainly knows what took place. According to ESPN, CP3 is furious that the Clippers haven’t stepped in to deflect the blame off of him: “How much of an impact this will have on Paul’s decision to re-sign with the Clippers as a free agent is not clear, but the source conceded that Paul’s anger could lead him to look elsewhere. ‘He’s angry right now and his anger is directed toward the Clippers organization,’ the source said. ‘Chris is a man of principle and if he feels like you’ve gone against his principles, it will affect how he feels about you. He’s very agitated that his name has been put out there as the reason for Vinny’s firing. He had nothing to do with it.’ It has been widely assumed that Paul will re-sign with the Clippers this summer. He often has spoken as if it’s a foregone conclusion. Plus, the Clippers can offer him a five-year, $108 million deal, $28 million more than any other club. But the source said he would not put it past Paul to turn down more money if he feels strongly that he’s been slighted. [...] A source with knowledge of the situation said Paul refused to get involved in the Clippers’ coaching situation and that he wanted nothing to do with the decision to retain or release Del Negro. ‘Chris made it abundantly clear to the Clippers that he did not want to be involved in any decision about Vinny’s future,’ the source said. ‘And Blake (Griffin) had nothing to do with it, either.’ The source said the Clippers’ front office was at odds with Del Negro for much of the season and that its differences with him were so strong that the executives did not need to consult Paul or any other players when deciding on Del Negro’s future with the team. One divide between Del Negro and the front office stemmed from the fact that the ex-coach made trade calls to other clubs during the season, according to a source. As the February trade deadline neared, the source said Del Negro discussed a potential deal with the Boston Celtics that would have sent DeAndre Jordan and Eric Bledsoe to Boston for Kevin Garnett. The rumor became major news around the league, even though the Clippers’ front office was staunchly against the trade.”

    Gone.

The firing of Del Negro is probably the most self-explanatory event in whole the ’12-’13 NBA season. It wasn’t any player involved in that decision, only Del Negro’s lack of coaching skills.

Wasn’t there a quote that said he WAS the reason though?

CP3 is tied with Dwill .

Donald Sterling avoided the question. He said he didn’t want to lie so he didn’t answer, when asked if VDN was fired to make Paul happy….

@nbk How much over the cap would the Lakers be if CP3 comes over, Dwight re-signs, and Kobe isn’t amnestied this summer?

  • LeroyShonuff

So Chris Paul is mad at the Clippers for being the Clippers basically… Yep, makes sense to me

  • JML-G

CP3 still got the best place to play with Clippers, playing with Dwight somewhere doesnt look nowhere near as appealing

Could’ve sworn I read somewhere that Chris Paul wanted a different coach or something. Maybe it was just speculation then…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well they all wanted a different coach. But Paul never once expressed that VDN needs to go. VDN got fired for the same reasons Mike Brown did in 2010

chris paul will be a knick when it is all said and done.you heard it hear first!

  • Sin City

Zero cap room with zero trade pieces. Yep, CP3 to Knicks it is.

  • GMR

Um, that’s not happening, but if it did, I’m pretty sure we all heard it about 5 years ago. Trust me, I know CP3, he isn’t into the NY “all hype but no substance” type of thing. He’s from NC, where they are all about substance and no hype. See the difference?

  • MikeC.

That team needed Vinny gone. He’s not equipped to deal with playoff strategies. However, he does seem to be developing a nice resume of taking bad, but young teams with talent and getting them moving on the path to the playoffs. Maybe he’s the coach a young team needs when they’re baby stepping, but it’s time for a change when the team is ready for grown man moves.

  • LobCity

Could CP3 have saved him? Sure. Is he the only one that didnt want VDN back? Nope. I believe DJ/Blake didn’t want him back. I think the front office didnt like VDN trying to trade DJ instead developing or better utilizing DJ. Not easy to sign/trade for another young, athletic big man to replace him.

  • Drig

CP3 and DWill dueling it out. I just hope CP3 decides to sign a 1 year deal somewhere and then come to the Lakers. I know no team would be foolish enough to sign a player for 1 year only but I’m kinda hoping it happens.

  • robb

    rightfully so

  • danpowers

there was already a statement by the knicks front office that this chris paul move wont happen. a sign and trade is almost impossible
