Chris Paul Undecided on Free Agency

Despite a five-year, $108 million deal waiting for him to sign at LA Clippers headquarters, Chris Paul says he has yet to make a decision regarding his impending free agency. Coming off a disappointing first round Playoff exit, there’s reason to be a tad nervous in Clipper-ville. Per ESPN: “I don’t know how this whole thing is going to play out,’ Paul said. ‘I’m going to pray about it. We’ll see.’ Paul passed on a chance to sign a three-year, $60 million extension with the Clippers last year, but can sign a five-year, $108 million deal this summer. He said he will take his time before deciding what he will do as an unrestricted free agent. ‘All season long, it’s something that I said I would address after the season and I really didn’t think about it all during the season,” Paul said. ‘The season’s not even 24 hours from being over, so I really haven’t thought about it. The craziest thing is that this season is over. I still haven’t got that wrapped around my brain.’ The best season in Clippers franchise history ended Friday night with a 118-105 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 6 of their first-round series. Despite leading the Clippers to their first division title and a record 56-win season, Paul was still hurting from being eliminated in the playoffs. He never has advanced past the second round and has missed the playoffs or has been eliminated in the first round six times. As he looks at where he wants to spend the next five years of his career, Paul said the opportunity to win a championship and play well into June will be a big factor. [...] Blake Griffin signed a five-year, $95 million extension with the Clippers last summer and said he and his teammates would talk to Paul about re-signing in the offseason. ‘He’s a huge piece to our team moving forward,’ Griffin said. ‘He’s going to know that we want him back and we would love for him to re-sign and keep moving forward with this franchise, but ultimately this is his decision. He has to do what’s right for him and his family and we’re going to be behind him.’ [...] Paul was influential in recruiting several players to sign with the Clippers in the offseason, including Matt Barnes and Grant Hill, and was a big reason why Chauncey Billups was comfortable converting to shooting guard in order to start alongside Paul.”

I’d sign back…but Only if they traded Deandre Jordan for Tim Duncan, and Tim Duncan showed Blake griffin all of his moves….They they signed Stephen Jackson and Stephen Jackson showed him some toughness….

  • Drig

1 year deal CP3. Then come to LAL. Dwight, Kobe/another all-star, CP3 and a solid bench and role players. That’s enough to get the title.

  • RayJr

What are CP3′s other viable options?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

my guess if knicks can dump amare..he goes to nyk!! book it!!

  • RayJr

I wish. So re-sign Dwight this summer, amnesty somebody, then sign CP3 AND Lebron in 2014…I can dream can’t I?

    Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta

  • RayJr

Quick question: If the Lakers amnesty Kobe this summer, can they re-sign him for cheap in 2013 or 2014? I’m not too familiar on the details of someone being amnestied besides their contract getting bought out and it not being in a team’s books.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

gotta wait a full year before you can resign a player you had previously amnestied.

  • RayJr

    Thanks.

  • JML-G

he is staying in Clippers – Lakers groupies need to forget about CP3 once and for all

  • JetSkiJohnson

or LAC could sign and trade with BKN and dwill could play the sg.. JJ and BG aint bad lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    no problem

  • pposse

hahah CP3 loses in the first rd again when he has the best compliation of players he ever had around him, and now he is unsure of where he will go?! Whichever one of you guys who ever referred to CP3 as the Point God should be exiled from ever commenting again.

  • RKJ92

That would be a horrible team.. what are you thinking?? :S

  • Ben Ireland

Blake got hurt and they ran into a Memphis buzzsaw… I think the Clips could have matched up better with absolutely anyone other than the Grizzlies. Memphis deserved the win, they played better, and CP3 had 2 relatively bad games by his standards. But he was guarded by arguably the best defender in the L, he was finishing over 2 massive guys, 1 of whom was DPOY, and he still put up good numbers, not to mention his amazing season. He’s still the best. Just bad luck he ran into Memphis so early, and they lost their one good big!

  • spit hot fiyah

did griffin not sign the max? why is his 5 year deal 13 mill less than paul’s? anyone with knowledge about this?

  • Sizzle

Here’s a thought, sign and trade CP3 for Russell Westbrook. Thunder instantly become the favorites for the title and Clippers get more dunk highlights next year. Just saying

  • Josias Johnson

CP3, Billups, Butler, Griffin, Jordan. Chauncey isn’t a two guard but chose to play the position to be able to start with Chris. Griffin and Jordan are explosive jumpers without any real postgame to mention. Meaning Chris was creating everything basically by himself. Just as he did in New Orleans. The playoffs are about matchups more than anything else. Two big men without post games going against two big men with great games in the post..not a good matchup.

  • JetSkiJohnson

    not really?

  • Zurisadai Robert

Max is based on how many years you have been in the league…. Griffin just came off his rookie contract

  • pposse

CP3 is an exceptional ball player, but every time the playoffs come around there is some sort of injury or matchup problem or excuse that he gets, the best PG should be getting out of the first rd. D Rose would have gotten that same Clipper team out of the first rd against Memphis, i would have loved to see if Russell Westbrook could do the same.

  • Josias Johnson

Injuries aren’t excuses. They’re legit. And so many people agree that matchups mean quite a bit in the playoffs. D-Rose is a different kind of PG. There you go with your seemingly Chicago bias. If the Bulls can’t score enough with Rose and Boozer, who can step out and shoot jumpers, what makes you think it would work better with Blake Griffin who can’t shoot half as well as Boozer? If you want to bring up Westbrook, cool. CP3 would have the Thunder in the Finals year after year playing with KD. KD would average an easy 30 points each season.

  • LP @ThisisEther

and they won’t dare amnesty Kobe..

  • spit hot fiyah

thanks. does it curtail at some point? or does a 15 year vet (hypothetically) have a bigger max than a 12 year vet?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    stax jax always been tough.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

im not sure if hes even staying in LA

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

haha ‘LA’s big kids dont need a baby sitter’

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

didnt they already use their amnesty on chauncey?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

the fans would burn down the staple center if they did

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    let the cp3 drama start.

  • pposse

yeah so i guess a CP3 led team never matches up well in the playoffs. CP3 should not be the focal pt of his team then, simple solution. The clips would have lost to the Spurs, Thunder, Rockets, Nuggets, and probably the Lakers too.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah that doesn’t paint a very good picture of the Clippers situation. Chris Paul may be on his way out, if he really does value winning over everything else.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that’s speculative. and probably false.

  • pposse

cmon now thats not really fair, neither team had that much change if any to their roster from the yr before. The Grizzlies lose Rudy Gay for Tayshaun Prince and they beat the Clippers?! The Clips weren’t about to go anywhere unless they played the GS Warriors.

  • Josias Johnson

Nah, they would’ve beaten the Lakers with or without Kobe Bryant. CP3 would have destroyed Nash and Kobe. Before the playoffs started, a lot of people said that the Clippers weren’t built for the playoffs and we saw that they weren’t. That’s not an indictment on Chris Paul. It’s the fact that they’re a fastbreak team that can be beaten if you don’t let them run the floor.

  • Kram

    nYk

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This Clippers team is a doormat without Chris Paul. The same people who think the Clippers are really good (you) are the same people who think Chris Paul is overrated. Which seems pretty broken, people said the same thing about the Hornets….and look at them when he left.
    .
Now look at the Clippers before Paul got there.

  • TR

Did anyone hear Stephen A say that the Clips may trade BLAKE BLEDSOE AND BUTLER for GARNETT AND PIERCE. oh and they would fire Vinny Del Negro and hire Doc. sounds crazy, but im no nba insider.

  • Mack

Yea that’s just what the Clippers need to get through the Grizzlies, Thunder or even the Spurs.. Dunk highlights. Smh

  • Sizzle

I was being totally sarcastic. It’s cool though

  • The Seed

Like I have stated plenty of times, his career in a CLipper uniform will be sad. Anybody who thought they were going to do something in the playoffs are sad. CP3 needs real players around him. Dunk Blake Dun, Shoot Crawford Shoot are not worth it. CP3 had the best players ever for him to play with and he could not lead them out of the 1st round. Plain an simple if CP3 stays a Clipper is CAREER IS OVER!!!. TOLD YALL

  • Gaurav Pokharel

WTF is praying going to do? Make up your damn mind instead of praying about it.

  • AQWORD

    word

  • http://www.facebook.com/OMGitsKINGDAVID Kinq David II

    y do u want lebron?

  • pposse

That team has a bunch of solid ball players. they have scorers, three pt shooters athletic big men (which is damn near impossible to find in the NBA) and a good pg.

A top 5 ball player would have gotten a team like that out of the first rd. CP3 is not top 5, nor is he the best PG in the game.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No, just because you have been fooled into thinking so doesn’t mean it’s true.
    .
What is true is that the Clippers only have one player who was good on both ends of the court this season.
    .
It’s pretty hard to be a really good team with 11 one way players.

  • pposse

Its not about what other players can do for CP3 anymore, its about what CP3 can do for other players. He isn’t a guy you build a team around, him nor Derron Williams; that formula will not and has not worked.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he just got them the 4 seed in the playoffs. and they ran into a better team.
    .
That is what he’s doing for those other players. WIthout him, they would be a 30 win ball club.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Derrick Rose has gotten a team just as far as Deron Williams has. And no further.
    .
So you saying this about Derrick Rose too?

  • pposse

u mean derron williams and carlos 24 and 12 boozer got a team just as far?!

the 10-11 Bulls were not constructed the same way as that team, no where near. Every time a team is built around Deron or CP3 since their glory days, the team sucks or underperforms in some way in the playoffs. There’s about 10 guys in the league right now that I would build around before those two guys. They need to start thinking of joining forces with someone better than them in order to win.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Actually the bulls team is better and more well rounded then any of those Jazz teams.

  • pposse

agree but the coach and d rose were the driving factors with that team vs the co stars of the pick and roll execution in carlos boozer and derron williams.

CP3 and Derron should explore the ‘D Wade’ role on another team; their impact in the playoffs will be greater.

  • RayJr

    Seriously?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i can’t really disagree with that. although i think Rose will be fine as a first option, assuming he retains his explosiveness.

    .

i don’t think Deron has what it takes to carry a team any longer.

    .

and i think Paul needs to be surrounded by other professionals. The children he as playing with out in LAC are not what you put around a PG like Paul. Did you read that story i posted about the Clippers yesterday?

  • pposse

    naw where’s it at?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • Zurisadai Robert

That’s a great question… I guess there is a max amount “cap” though so that after X amount of years in the league there is no difference in max. But I need to look in to that.
