Derrick Rose Has Reportedly Decided to Sit Out the Remainder of the Playoffs

Well, if this is true—this Yahoo! Sports report doesn’t cite Derrick Rose directly, but rather an unidentified source—it should put an end to speculation that was sure to be hanging over every Bulls game from here on out. According to Yahoo!, D-Rose has privately decided to sit out for the remainder of the Playoffs: “For the good of his franchise and fans, for everyone’s focus to be where it should belong now – Bulls-Heat, Game 1 on Monday – Rose needs to drop the illusion that his return in these playoffs remains a consideration. ‘Who knows?’ Rose told reporters hours on Saturday. ‘It’s still up in the air.’ Who knows? Derrick Rose knows. His choice has been made to sit out the season and it includes no provisions for turning back, sources with direct knowledge told Yahoo! Sports. Inside and outside of the organization, that isn’t much of a revelation. After all, the surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee was May 12, 2012. Doctors cleared him to start scrimmaging with the team in mid-February. After all that, he isn’t walking out for the first time with LeBron James and the Miami Heat waiting to jump him. Between Rose and the public, this has become a tiresome dance. His brother, Reggie, recently said Derrick could return in the second round. Only, Reggie’s brother isn’t returning in the conference semifinals, or the conference finals, or the NBA Finals. He is sitting out the season. … Make no mistake: The issue shouldn’t be Rose’s unwillingness to play until he believes his reconstructed knee meets his standards, but rather this charade of refusing to rule out his return in these playoffs.”

only smart and logical decision there was for DRose

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

Don’t risk d rose Miami will put a beating on you.. Come back next even stronger!

  • Jer dawg

This is dumb. Every single time I see Bulls I think why Rose is refusing to say enough is enough. I’m not coming back for remainder of this season. Why isn’t he getting the PR hit like everyone else? What double standard is out there for this guy? Because I’m really thinking this guy is playing some dumb game with this dangling carrot. I’m sure this doesn’t help with his sponsorships.

  • Max

He doesn’t get the PR hit like everyone else, because he is doing the smart thing.
    Simple as that.

  • http://twitter.com/GablesStyle GablesStyle

he will only miss 4 or 5 more games at the most then.

  • ThaWindy

Well he has been taking a hit. But who really expected him to return after he didnt play one regular season game?
I understand the media wants readers and hits and they wanted to teach Rose a lesson. Twisting his leg to make a decision on wether or not he’s going to play. Using injuried teammates and “fans” as pons. Even the fact that he’s still getting paid as if the organization is losing money by him not playing. As if they make a contract forgetting the fact that that player could end his career,”cough Jason Williams”.
Before Rose torn his ACL he did the samething Deng, Noah, Capt Kirk, Gibson, etc do now and that’s play hurt.
But DRose can do no wrong! This is his city. Southside!

  • greg

he is at NO increased risk of reinjury as opposed to his teammates. There is absolutely no reason for him he cant play 20 minutes a game and keep teague off the floor. It all seems pretty selfish that he thinks he has to come back and be one of the best players in the world.Just because miami is a better team than the bulls, doesnt mean you cant go out there and play hard like the rest of the team. in short, if boozer can attempt to play defense, Rose can attempt to be a role player, and if it doesnt work, shut him down.

What a Joke! Bulls fans must be annoyed by this all by now.

  • Josias Johnson

I’ve never believed unnamed sources. But I don’t expect him to play even though he should have played in the Nets series in my opinion. Too late now. Going up against LeBron, Wade and Bosh isn’t what he wants to do right now.

  • Markus437

I would be more understanding but he ain’t David Lee

  • candlewood jay

    Need to sell tickets

  • The Seed

I have lost respect for Rose, its no reason he cannot go out and play basketball. Something he has done for over 18 years. Muscle memory what. I actually believe if Rose came back, he would inspire the BULLS even more. Also why come back to play 82 games to get to this point, when you are at the point if the Bulls beat Heat, they will represent the East in the NBA Finals.

  • The Philosopher

Noah’s the man right now, anyway.

noah was ridiculous last night. he punk’d reggie hump & lopez all at once. bunch of sissies.

  • Josias Johnson

There’s another round after this one so the Bulls would have to beat Indiana or New York to represent the East if they beat Miami (which they won’t do). Rose is scared to death of getting hurt again. No one will say it, but that’s my opinion. He’d never been hurt badly before this. He has to get over it and play, but that’s what it is to me. Losing respect for him because he’s scared to get hurt again doesn’t really make any sense. If he’s sitting out because he doesn’t think his team can beat Miami, losing respect for him would be understandable.

  • jmm

How can anyone say this isn’t the right decision? To win in the playoffs these dudes would all need to have been playing together all year. Chemistry is everything, guts only gets you so far. The Second Round is not where you shake off your rust and find your legs again.

It’s a no-brainer – rush back, lose anyway, risk damaging yourself or take the time, get right, have a good and lenghtly career.

  • The Philosopher

The kid had the game of his career…
It’s funny because, the year Noah was drafted, I was speaking with UCONN’s Josh Boone. I spoke with him before the draft and after.
I mean, Boone really tried to convince me that he was better than Noah. He tried to convince me that he was better than Anderson Varejo, too.
Boone was my guy at the time, but…
It was hilarious. It took everything in my being not to correct, or laugh at Boone about that.
Long story short, we all see how things are turning out.

soooo…The whole #thereturn was for nothing? hyping everyone even himself to just give it up now that the bulls are in the second round, common you lil *&^%$!! this sob better suit up.

  • DS

As a Bulls fan this pisses me off more than Dickey Simpson, tell the truth out of your own mouth so the rumors about returning or not returning stop

  • Redrum

I completely understand him. I have had an ACL surgery and know first hand how difficult it is. Once you are cleared to scrimmage, it takes a good 3-6 months before you are back to yourself. He is actually doing his team a favour staying out, he would be a liability. Everyone who says that he is soft not to jump in and play is an idiot, his body is not ready for the intensity of playoff basketball, even though the knee is cleared, it is very likely that he would injure something else.

  • spit hot fiyah

    you just dropped something bro

  • spit hot fiyah

    dickey simpkins?

  • The Philosopher

To this day, I still think about that conversation. I still question whether he was serious.
I guess, they have to say things like that. Even if they know better.
When I played, one could not get me to admit that another player was better than me. Even if I knew otherwise. It went against my rules.
    Ah, well…

  • JetSkiJohnson

he didn’t punk Reggie Evans. I understand your excitement though.

  • JetSkiJohnson

Rose is whack for this , they’re gonna get swept now.

  • Josias Johnson

4-1, 4-0…If he didn’t play in the last series, him coming back now wouldn’t mean a thing going up against Miami especially with how rusty he’d be.

  • spit hot fiyah

    never underestimate irrational confidence

  • JetSkiJohnson

he participates in full practice.. Plus he does not have to start or play big minutes just a couple to put fear in some hearts.

  • The Philosopher

  • Josias Johnson

Fear in whose heart? LeBron and D-Wade? Won’t happen. Nothing to fear.

  • airs

homie should just willis reed this and get like one bucket and call it a season

  • http://www.facebook.com/clint.boyd.14 Clint Boyd

Shumpert hurt his knee on the same night…..and he is back playing well. Rose is weak!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

hes been the while for a while. so much heart.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    very much so.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Rose is not making a difference in this series either way buddy

  • James

Lazy selfish only out for himself y does he need a year to recover knee surgery, he’s just protecting his stats. Lazy, no heart.

  • James

Oops my bad, I thought this article was about jeremy lin nvm. Derrick I hope you heal up, take care of yourself, you’re making the right choice, can’t risk re injury now. It’s smart and logical keep up the good work bro.

  • Bruce Wayne

Point heard, but sometimes “irrational confidence” can take people to heights they wouldn’t have otherwise reached..

  • Bruce Wayne

Exactly. You understand as a player that from a confidence and pride perspective, you can’t just say some dude is better than you, and a lot of times, thinking that you are better than your opponent can help to win the matchup, even if they have more talent than you.

  • Bandwagonfan

Cus thereturn commercial and rose 3 shoes makes people believe he will return this year. $$$

  • rkirby

James, tell us about the time you had the eyes and expectations of a whole city and millions of fans on you as you recovered from one of the worst injuries an athlete can sustain. Don’t worry. I’ll wait.

  • palinhb

    virgin idiot

  • Fitzy

completely unrelated but that lax bucky is soo dirty man.

  • berto

wont play this season but wait for him in one of those summer leagues. smh

  • BullsFanEst93

Some people aren’t seeing what Derrick did. Yes, I agree with the fact he wants to play it safe, I would hate for this guy to be another Penny Hardaway or Grant Hill or Vince Carter. However, if this decision of his was made a long time ago -that he wasn’t playing this year- than he should have came out and said so instead of leading everyone on that there was a chance. He basically lied to keep his rep relatively okay until he comes back, and that, I have a problem with.

Also, as of right now, this is purely mental with him, this is not a physical thing and that can only come through real game situations. Even if he can only give 10-20mins a game and be a role player, that would be also a great choice. But from everything that he’s said and done, it seems pretty clear he’s got a Allen Iverson complex. He wants to be at full form and not be embarassed(which is a great mentality) but if he can play and give his team some help, he should do it. Rose has spouted off about how important team is and this is the time where he needs to step up and prove, do whatever the team needs. Yeah sure, they won’t win the series, his presence might only make this a 5 game series instead of 4, but it would cement his image as a true leader who will do anything for his teammates. That’s how his team will succeed in the future, if they know they have a guy they are willing to go to war with, but with what he’s done this year with this charade he”s put everyone though. It’s pretty safe to say, this guy will never be comfortable coming off the bench or being just a role player. He just wants to be the man.

bulls are doing really week, and they have all the confidence they need playing together. DRose should keep his grey suit on and cheer his teammates

  • spit hot fiyah

true, i didn’t say it was categorically bad.

  • Dan

ALLEN IVERSON WOULD BE ON THE COURT RIGHT NOW IF HE HAD THIS INJURY AND HED BE GETTING READY TO DROP 30, KEEP HIS TEAM IN EVERY GAME. This is the difference between the two. Iverson was a warrior todays superstars are not.

  • ATL dynamite

Word. Let’s not forget how putting in Nelson for Alston ruined the Magic’s chances in the finals.

  • Max

    Weiner poop.

  • SpriteMass

Still don’t get this. It will be another 12 months before they have an opportunity to make the second round again.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if he injured himself in game one of 2013/14.

  • Josias Johnson

Rose played through injury all of last season until he tore his ACL. Or did you forget?

  • LP @ThisisEther

    Very Much

  • LP @ThisisEther

And what he doesn’t understand is, HE cant come back FULL FORM unless he plays these 10-20 mins……Even when next season starts, he STILL won’t initially be full form…

  • LP @ThisisEther

He did NOT play through injury during that lockout year….He missed a bunch of games…He might have played nicked up, but when he was injured, he sat out…He almost missed the ALL-Star game

  • LP @ThisisEther

he won’t be in any summer leagues….too much pressure now to get injured…Can you imagine the headlines? “Derrick rose breaks hand/twist ankle/re-injures back in a summer league, may miss training camp..”

  • LP @ThisisEther

Call Me insane, but I don’t see how anyone could turn down the opportunity to go up against the best team and best player in the NBA….I would die to play MIAMI. F Money, f contracts, f politics, f chemistry, I’m playing…..It’s up to him, tho…

I think him not playing has something to do with the fact that he got injured last year, and he wasn’t even supposed to be in the game… The game was pretty much in hand, if anyone can remember…and he was already having a injury prone season…

  • Josias Johnson

He played through injury. He said it himself. He probably should have missed more games. Turf toe, back spasms, pulled groin. He played with them all. He never let any of them completely heal. It’s documented. Look it up. He almost missed the All-Star game so that he could get a little time off because of the back spasms. Thibs barely played him in the game because of it.

  • Mars

This is why Rubio is the truth…nuff said

  • http://www.facebook.com/avanbeek Andrew VanBeek

It’s hard to have much respect for Rose when the bulls are undermanned, and injured players like Noah are playing their hearts out (and beat the heat mind you), while he’s been medically cleared to play and won’t even set foot on that court.
