Erik Spoelstra Defends Injured and Struggling Dwyane Wade

It’s no secret that Dwyane Wade has been slowed down by a right knee injury, robbing him of the usual explosiveness. Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra bristled at the suggestion that Wade’s struggles are hurting the defending champions. Per the Miami Herald: “Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was noncommittal Tuesday about Wade playing in Game 5 on Wednesday night at AmericanAirlines Arena, but Wade said Monday night he expected to play. ‘There’s really nothing that you can do,’ Wade said. ‘I’ve tried to exhaust all possibility, but it is what it is.’ [...] Spoelstra is confident Wade will still be effective. ‘He’s a battler, he’s a warrior, he’ll fight through it, and he never makes excuses for anything and he’s giving us everything he’s got and he’s giving us minutes that help us win — that’s the bottom line,’ Spoelstra said of Wade. ‘I know everyone’s looking at how many shots he’s getting up and how many points he can score. He’s at a point where he knows every series is different, every game is different and the whole point is help us win and he’s doing that.’ Wade had six points in Game 4, and his lack of explosion has taken away his ability to get to the basket. In the series, Wade is 1 of 2 from the free-throw line. ‘Is he coming in there and creating 30 a night? No, but he’s creating a lot of good things for us, defensively he’s competing, giving us a presence from the perimeter position to help rebound,’ Spoelstra said. ‘And then offensively he’s making the right plays and oftentimes that’s to throw it back and let the ball start moving, so he’ll continue to get in better rhythm. He had some good actions [Monday night] that hopefully we can lean and build on for Wednesday.’”

Anyone thinks the Pacers have a real shoot against Miami with Wade’s injury ? Also, does anyone have stats of the Paul/Lebron matchup this season ? And what is the biggest difference between this year compare to last year ? Basically, if someone wants to do an early preview, please go ahead.

I don’t think it really matters, its the playoffs and LeBron will own George. He has about 40 pounds on him anyway, just let Bron dominate in the post all game until they decide double him, thus leaving wide open shots for Allen, Cole, Battier, and even Wade.

Let’s see how well that will work with Roy guarding the basket.

Wade is not the same anymore, that’s a fact, but i don’t let the few poor weeks of play fool me ever again after everything that happened this season.I BET,he will be fully or at least relatively healthy by the end of conference finals.Championship is staying in florida no matter what problems occur along the way, in my opinion.

Haha! Your forgetting Bosh can step out and shoot the three as well. I suppose Roy is going to step out and guard Bosh on the perimeter too!? I mean come on…no matter what the Pacers try to throw at the Heat, the Heat will counter. That is if they even get by the Knicks. The series is not over yet.

I just love how a player who knows he is hurt but still doing the little things for his team to secure a win is being considered to be hurting his team. He isn’t out there jacking up shots to get his numbers or not competing on defense.

Yes he isn’t scoring the ball as everyone is use to but it isn’t like the Heat are lacking fire power…especially against the Bulls.

Maybe a zone – like the Mavs did two years ago. They have better shooters now but I would take that chance.

The Pacers have a “shot” either way. It’s just not a very good shot. They match up with Miami wonderfully. Just like Memphis does.

if only ray can defend like wade, we wouldn’t miss Wade that much

  • Max

If Bosh is going to be the one beating you with three’s, you take the L and go home.

i agree with nbk. in fact, I’ve always pictured that the Pacers are the only team that can match up the Heat in this series. well that’s just my opinion, no hate.

I’m not saying he will, but he is more then capable and I think Roy has to beware of that as well. So if Roy leaves the paint to go guard Bosh out there, then the driving lanes will open. Just something to think about…

they need wade at at LEAST 85%, if not, i don’t think they win the finals. (and if wade is really hurt, indiana can give them real problems)

  • Max

Yeah your right, the Heat can do all those things, but at the other end they also have to guard Roy and DWest inside.
I think we’ll be seeing quite alot of Birdman and Haslem.

Agreed, the Heat will have trouble getting boards on both ends as well.

  • Michelle

Put Hibbert on Haslem/Birdman and Dwest on Bosh. They have a similar game. Both like the elbow jumper. This way Hibbert stays effective

If he is injured, then that’s what it is!Its a team game. And if my boy Cole and Allen need to step up,thats what they do!Its the playoffs,so everybody got to step up their game. When its time to hand out the rings,I bet everybody hand is stuck out reaching for one.Nobody is crying except the haters, real talk!

  • LP @ThisisEther

    i think he’s playing Possum…

  • http://twitter.com/cmd3382 CMD

Yea. West can’t guard Bosh at this stage of his career…I’m sorry, he just can’t.

regardless, lebrons bout to be turned up.

Avery Johnson said it best when he was coaching the Mavericks, and they were playing the Heat in the postseason,”First he hurt, then he fine…”
