George Karl Gets Vote of Confidence From Nuggets President

Although George Karl led the Nuggets to a franchise best 57-win season, there have been rumors that Karl’s job was in danger after Denver’s first-round series exit.Team president Josh Kroenke said the Nuggets “haven’t really given any thought” to firing Karl. From the Denver Post: “Across the Denver area Friday, opinions were fired off like Stephen Curry jump shots. Should the Nuggets keep coach George Karl, who won a franchise NBA-best 57 games, or let him go after a first-round playoff flameout? ‘George is under contract for next year. At this point in time, we haven’t really given any thought to making any change whatsoever,’ team president Josh Kroenke told The Denver Post and Nuggets.com. ‘As we do at the end of every season, we’ll have internal meetings and George will obviously be a major part of them. We won 57 games and in my mind, he should hands down be the NBA coach of the year. We’ll all put our heads together and try to figure out what happened (in the playoffs) and why it happened. We were without our second-leading scorer, and some benefit of the doubt should be given to a coach with well over 1,000 wins without one of his leading scorers (injured Danilo Gallinari) in the playoffs.’”

I think George Karl might be one of the most overrated coaches ever. Just my opinion though.

over achieved in the regular season, under achieved in the post season. not having gallo might be an excuse even though they didn’t miss a beat during the regular season when he went down. if they fire karl the question becomes who out there that is interested in the job can do a better job than him

    lol you wrong

whats the furthest hes gone? finals with the sonics?

  • Caboose

Yeah. He is the BEST coach of all time at getting a middling team to the Playoffs to lose in the first round.

“Over achieved in the regular season, under achieved in the post season.” That sums up Karl’s career right there.

George Karl continues to get a pass despite the fact that he has only been out of the 1st Round 7 times out of the 22 times his teams have made the Playoffs and once out of the last 10 times his teams have made the Playoffs. Guys like Melo and TMac get all sorts of flack for their failure to consistently make it out of the 1st Round but coaches seem to be immune from such criticism.

haha i wasnt saying he was great. he makes due with what hes got tho.

  • melvo

He made it to the Conference finals with Melo and Billups a couple years ago…that’s something, I guess.

He should be fired. 8 1st round exits in 9 years in Denver Era. That would be unacceptable in cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, Boston, or Miami. He is 6-15 in playoff series since he took SuperSonics to NBA Finals. Team is the same without Carmelo Anthony a 1st Round exit waiting to happen. Good regular season coach but can’t get it done in playoffs.

I am not saying the people saying George Karl is overrated are wrong, because I haven’t followed his whole trajectory. But I would like to put the last few years in perspective: he’s battled cancer, restructured the team completely after the ‘Melo-drama’ and then this year the Nuggets got ousted by a Golden State team that is overachieving due to the emergence of super-star Steph Curry, and such hot shooting that it looked unsustainable but they managed somehow to keep it up.
