Grizzlies VP John Hollinger Had Predicted Spurs Would Reach the NBA Finals

Just before he was hired by the Memphis Grizzlies to be their VP of Basketball Operations John Hollinger was writing for ESPN, and he was their only scribe to predict that San Antonio would win the Western Conference. After the Spurs swept his team out of the postseason last night, Hollinger good-naturedly poked fun at himself this morning on Twitter: “Irony 1, Hollinger 0.”

Hollinger made up a dumb stat line now he is considered a basketball genius lol

Why? SO he can trade away Derrick Rose because the advance stats say so and they did ok without him this year??????? no thanks.

if that was a shot at the gay trade u should really reconsider. they never got out of the first round with gay, who is also severely overpaid

his stat is pretty damn good. ANd he’s made or had a hand in making a lot of the stats we use all the time. he’s just really really famous for one. Because it’s the best thing anyone has come up with yet.

the advanced stats don’t say that.

  • BugEyes

If I’m correct he made the per stat? I’m not sure, it bunches all the stats together and tells us who has the best stats combined, which the best players in the league are atop at so it’s not useless but more of a complimentary stat

Yeah I mean of course people over use it. Especially him and ESPN who get all the benefits of its widespread use. But when taken into proper context, the stat is pretty much the most useful in looking at each guy in a broad spectrum.

OK…obviously having two young children at home is interfering with my ability to stay on top of hoops news, but…John Hollinger, VP of Basketball Operations? HUH?

Check out the East picks: http://espn.go.com/nba/preview2012/story/_/id/8517189/2012-13-nba-predictions-eastern-conference-champion

    Chris Forsberg’s Twitter: “Homer-ism 1, Integrity 0″

At least they didn’t pick the Nuggets like “The Mag” did:

  • Ugh

Having a 25+ PER player is actually less likely to predict NBA champion than a team’s player winning the MVP, having two players named to the All-Star team, having the league leading rebounder, or having one player on an All Defensive team.

It does tell you that players named Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal are very good players, though, which makes it an important metric because we wouldn’t have known that otherwise.

none of those things are stats.

    lol

They only had like 1 legit opportunity. He was hurt the first year, they loss one year, and he was traded this year. (I’m only counting the 3 years after he signed his max deal, and those are also the years gasol and Conley have been playing their best)
