JR Smith Blames Mentality for Missing So Many Shots

After denying rumors that he’s been partying too much prior to Playoff games, JR Smith came up with few answers regarding his struggling jumper. With New York Knicks fans growing frustrated, Smith thinks he needs to improve his mental approach against the hyper-aggressive Indiana Pacers defense. Per Newsday: “For three quarters, it was the same old story again. J.R. Smith hoisted up jumper after jumper. They bounced off the backboard, rolled off the rim and fell left and right — everywhere but in the hole. Smith, the emotional engine of a Knicks team that hopes to go deep in the NBA playoffs, opened the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Pacers by shooting 1-for-10 in the first three quarters. Not so coincidentally, the Knicks lost, 102-95, finding it impossible to climb out of their 16-point deficit at the end of the third quarter. [...] Smith wound up with 17 points but shot 4-for-15, making it the third straight game in which he has been off the mark. Since being suspended for Game 4 of the Celtics series for elbowing Jason Terry, Smith has shot 12-for-42 and totaled 44 points in three games. ‘I don’t know. I don’t know,’ Smith said when asked if there is a reason for his shooting slump. ‘It’s just one of those things you go through, and hopefully it comes back soon.’ Smith said it wasn’t so much the Pacers’ defense that gave him problems as his own wrong mind-set for the first three quarters. ‘Really, I did it to myself,’ he said. ‘I was playing through a mental game, trying to get the basket, relying on my jumper too much. When I miss shots, I just need to keep pushing the ball instead of walking it up. I’m a big piece of the puzzle. I need to keep pushing and pushing and pushing. And don’t beat myself up mentally.’”

A guy whose offense is predicated on extremely difficult shots needs to have supreme confidence that they’re all going to go in – doesn’t surprise me he’s been shooting so poorly if he’s in his own head. Knicks live and die by JR, hope he gets it together soon.

    against Paul George

    Carmelo was 5-18

    JR Smith was 0-7
Paul George on defense yesterday held his opponents to 5-23 shooting.

if by mentality you mean shot selection then yes

how tall is he??? like 6’10″?? I wonder if this guy has an Iggy ceiling or something closer to LeBron

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yea, 6’10″
he has as much defensive potential as we’ve ever seen from a wing player.

  • RKJ92

    don’t boost, he’s 6’9. I know an inch doesn’t make a diff but it’s the truth.

  • spit hot fiyah

then he drove off blasting the geto boys’ my mind is playing trix on me…..it was not reported

  • LakeShow

    Close to as much.
Let us bow to the great Pippen once more.

“potential” and fulfillment are different things. Anything that Pippen was doing physically that George can’t?
the difference far as i can tell was the breakfast club.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no it isn’t. he’s 6’10″. — grew 2 inches in the summer after his rookie year.

  • Caboose

    Check that math, nbk. 18 + 7 = 23?
Georgie held them to 5-25 shooting.

    looooooool, fixed.

  • Caboose

    Just looking out for ya

denying rumors? lol, too many claimed to have seen him and i even saw some time / date tagged pix of him partying the nights b4 game 5 vs boston and game 1 vs indiana. maybe all these ppl claiming to have him seen lie and those pics being photoshop manipulated, but i think its more probable that he was partying.

especially when u look at him in certain situations, when he is forced to make quick decisions, he either hesitates or just f*cks up the play. to me thats pretty much a hint for someone who didnt sleep / rest enough to have his full cognitive abilities available. not to mention he looks like he has lazy legs for his standards.

he should rest the pipe and keep that sh*t for the postseason. im sure the ladies are going to wait.

it gives me hope as a knick fan tho that this guy finally questions himself and that we lost by 7 even though everything that couldve went wrong went wrong.

He needs to drive like he was at the end of the season and what catapulted him past Crawford for the 6th Man Award
