JR Smith Says He Wants to Retire a Knick

Following a rough outing during the Knicks’ last game of the season, JR Smith—who has an opt-out clause many expect him to take this summer—was asked about his future with the franchise. Sounds like, despite the long odds that New York will be able to afford him, the guard wants to remain in the Big Apple. Via the New York Daily News:  ”If these were J.R. Smith’s final games in a Knicks uniform, he went out mostly firing blanks. A season in which he was praised for maturing into the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year ended with Smith most likely heading toward free agency on the heels of an unsightly shooting slump that was a prime factor in the Knicks getting eliminated by the Pacers in six games in the Eastern Conference semifinals. ‘I left shots out there that I should have made, and I wasn’t there for my teammates,’ Smith said after missing 11 of 15 shots in the Knicks’ season-ending 106-99 loss Saturday night. … Whether Smith, 27, gets a chance to redeem himself in New York is uncertain. He is expected to opt out of the final year of his below-market value contract ($2.8 million per year) and test free agency this summer. The most the Knicks can offer the Jersey product is an ‘early Bird’ exception starting at $4.9 million per year over four years, but there might be a team with more salary-cap room willing to pay Smith substantially more. ‘I want to retire a Knick. I don’t want to go anywhere else,’ Smith said. ‘I love my teammates, I love my coaches. I was standing in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game and just knowing that I don’t want to be anywhere else except in the orange and blue. We’ll see.’”

JR cost himself a LOT of money this playoffs.

Possibly enough that the difference in $ another team is willing to offer vs what the Knicks can offer may not be that dramatic. Opens the door just slightly more for his return to the Knicks. Whether Knicks fans can forgive him for the last 3 weeks is another issue altogether though.

  • J

lol he’s peacing out. Not a chance hes gonna stay for $4.9 when a team like Dallas needs a shooting gaurd and can give him much more.

Ain’t nobody want this desert thirsty n**ga

  • def80s

Chicago be interesting but not with a backcourt of nate and smith though, think it’ll be terrible

JR in Dallas?! that might work real good.

  • LLC#12

Not sure what I see this guys future contributions being. I don’t think he is reliable enough to be a 2nd scorer in the NBA. Either a scoring punch off the bench, or a 3rd option is his ceiling imo. Both of those things are probably worth more than $4.9 mil though!

  • jmm

I take him at his word on this. JR loves NYC. I bet he takes a couple million less to live and play here. I was there for his first game at MSG – the crowd went sick when he made his first shot and you could see something light up in him. I’m betting (and hoping as a Knick fan) he stays.

  • Caboose

They don’t have an OJ Mayo type shooting guard, right? Wait.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

oj aint sh*t compared to JR.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

They do the same thing lol damn near the same size I would take either or.

  • spit hot fiyah

    oj can leave

  • danpowers

dont worry. thats sports: have a good run and people celebrate you no matter how bad you used to be b4 or have a bad run and people boo your a*s no matte what you did for them b4. in other words: that will all be forgotten as soon as he goes on a hot streak

  • LP @ThisisEther

    Mayo is gone

  • LP @ThisisEther

nah i don’t think so…..he’s definitely gonna get the same offers he would have gotten before the playoff…and all of those offers will be above 2.8M and 4.9M per year….teams aren’t gonna think twice over a 1-2 week slump…

OJ’s game is bland. JR has flash. obviously mavs aint winning anytime soon. but if you wanna highlights, move tickets and sales… JR

  • Lucentum

I wish he goes to Minny… anybody playing with Rubio will thrive

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Most NY can offer is 25 mill, he will probably get around 35+ from someone.

I would agree…..I think OJ is a more reliable second scorer though I must admit I am a tad disappointed with OJ.

And I wanted to retire a Burger King employee, we can’t all get what we want JR..

  • Caboose

JR Smith gets some of the most irrational love of any player out there.

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

Oj has been a consistent starter 3 out of 5 years in the league and this is the first time JR played more than 30 minutes a game. Oj is the offers the same production just less wtf moments. Seems like you just dislike the Knicks.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

By pointing out a point of view, I have a problem with the Knicks? To Knicks fans I have a problem with them. To the Lakers fans its them. Bulls fans, it’s them. Y’all are cute.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

and hes been on a decline ever since his rookie year…

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

I am very disappointed in JR I think he cost himself a lot of $ … He proved that he really can’t be trusted as a second scorer … He is the same player as OJ and that’s not a good thing.

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

In actuality I said that in reference to your consistent abuse of the DanPowers dude. As he seemingly is a die hard Knicks fan and you two are usually in opposition. I use abuse jokingly, but my point is OJ and JR are the same player.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Except OJ is often too passive. JR is too erratic. OJ is a more willing passer. Can guard 1′s and 2′s while JR is better on 2′s and 3′s. OJ is the better shooter. He also has a better handle. JR has much more confidence. Which is a great thing. JR is better as a 6th man in my opinion. But id rather have OJ if I need a starter.
    .
    They are definitely different.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Statistically yeah. His role has been changing pretty much every year. And this year it changed a third of the way through the season.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

i didnt watch the mavs much this season, how is he on D? u think the mavs wil keep him?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

He’s above average with everyone but the really big 2′s. and he can’t handle the ultra quick guys either. So he’s a defensive in betweener as much as he is an offensive one. If I had to grade him overall defensively with C being average..probably a B-
    .
I don’t know, Dallas is all about scoring a big fish. And OJ may be asking for too much money. My bet would be that he stays, but id put it at like 51%. Wouldn’t be surprised if be ended up in Phoenix/LAC/Orlando/Philadelphia either

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Just pay attention, Dan confronts me just above every time the Knicks come up. I’m just volunteering my opinion, just like I do everywhere else.

  • danpowers

breaking news, i agree with you on a knicks related issue here lol

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

I agree that OJ can guard 1s better but he is smaller than JR so he can’t really guard 3s. Percentage wise he is a better shooter but to the eye test they are pretty much the same. They are different as is every person in the world, however they offer the same production. I’m too lazy to post a link of last years stats but any genius can look it up

  • http://twitter.com/Esquire_J Esquire J

Hell Jason Collins and Jaron Collins are different but they offer the same production, which is next to nothing

  • Youngindy21

Chicago will have D-Rose back next season so what are you talking about?

  • danpowers

do you think ny should even offer him that 25 mil? im really not sure about his true value

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

He’s definitely worth that money. Even if NY didn’t have long term plans for him, 25 is a bargain if he’s as good as he was this year. I just think someone else pays him almost double per year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

All his fans are tryna get the pipe

  • Clos1881

It really doesn’t matter what the fans forgive the Knicks wouldn’t even have been in that position without out him. Knicks fans get a lot of credit for being smart but that’s overrated their more emotional than anything these are the same fans saying I hope Carmelo doesn’t ruin what Jeremy Lin was doing and him thinking he was a star player.

  • danpowers

i hope that his off court antics and recent playoff performance (around 30% fg% during the last 2 years) will really dump his market value.
but he seems pretty much commited anyway: http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/22273998/report-jr-smith-will-re-sign-with-knicks-on-four-year-deal

i dont even really want that guy to stay at all cost, its just that i dont think the team wont be able to get anything close of equal quality within the current cap situation. unless stat takes a pay cut i dont expect much to change.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

STAT can’t take a pay cut. That is not an option.
    .
I don’t think there is anything close to Smith on the market for New York to chase this year. They better hope he doesn’t get a market value offer.

  • danpowers

true. but even if that happens, maybe a lesser talented but more disciplined player could help more. i love watching jr coz when he is on fire he really is. but most of the WTF moments bring me close to heart attacks

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

idk, i think you should just hope the Knicks retain Smith. They can’t offer anyone else even 5 mill a season. Most they can offer a player from another team is 2.5 mill a year starting in 2013-14, far as i remember.

  • danpowers

would that still be the case if camby and / or kidd retire during the summer?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah. they are over the salary cap again this summer no matter what they do. So they only have the mini mid level exception, which is $3million a season.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah. they are over the salary cap again this summer no matter what they do. So they only have the mini mid level exception, which is $3million a season.

  • danpowers

ah ok, i thought (hoped) that there would maybe still exceptions to aquire players in replacement clauses if others dissolve their contracts.

i know the cap will be something around 72mil without smith’s and prigionis salaries. doesnt look like a good situation to me -.-
