LeBron James Headlines NBA All-Defensive Team

Marc Gasol, the winner of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, will have to settle for a spot on the All-Defensive Second Team. Instead, LeBron James and Tony Allen headline the First Team. Here’s the press release: “Allen totaled 53 points overall and James tallied 52. Each player received 25 First Team votes. Joining Allen and James on the NBA All-Defensive First Team are guard Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers (37 points, 15 First Team votes) and forward Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder (46 points, 17 First Team votes). Rounding out the First Team are centers Tyson Chandler of the New York Knicks and Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, who tied with 24 points each while getting nine and eight First Team votes, respectively. [...] The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of guards Avery Bradley of the Boston Celtics (10 First Team votes) and Mike Conley of the Grizzlies (four First Team votes), forwards Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs (three First Team votes) and Paul George of the Indiana Pacers (seven First Team votes), and center Marc Gasol of the Grizzlies (five First Team votes). The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.”

according to the coaches marc gasol is the 3rd best defensive center

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    this is embarrassing.

  • http://twitter.com/MookDaChosen1 Mook

so according to this article/post there are a total 6 first team all-defenders. noah, james, allen, paul, ibaka and chandler. wtf.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yeah, Chandler and Noah tied.

  • Pingback: LeBron James Headlines NBA All-Defensive Team | PhilaPhans – Sixers' Foul Line – 76ers (Blogs – Forums – Message Board)

  • MUBWAR

well noah and chandler are tied so they’re occupying 1 position(center)

  • LLC#12

This is a mind-boggling lack of logic. Has this ever happened before, the DPOY not making the first team?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Should have been,
1st team – G- Tony Allen, G- Andre Iguodala, F- LeBron James, F- Joakim Noah, C- Marc Gasol
2nd team – G- Mike Conley, G- Paul George, F- Larry Sanders, F- Tim Duncan, C- Roy Hibbert.
    .
I care not for positions. F that.

  • Max

    Ooooooh boooyyy…
    Lebron
    PG
    Marc
    Tony
    Conley

    Timmy
    Larry
    Noah
    Iggy
    CP3

  • Max

    Kobe Had 6 points whaaaat?
    Mike freakin James 2????
    MWP had 2?
    David West??

  • spit hot fiyah

it actually makes sense when thinking about it, since chandler and noah together are better than gasol ;)

  • MUBWAR

ya last year or the year before with Tyson Chandler

  • spit hot fiyah

    last year

  • http://twitter.com/MookDaChosen1 Mook

    i see, thanks.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i yelled at the hoopmag guy because of this, i didn’t know tie’s happened.

  • Max

    Yeah, it was last year.

  • Kadavour

    Eric Bledsoe
    Tony Allen
    Andre Iguadala
    LeBron James
Marc Gason (barely edges out Joakim on my list)

  • RayJr

I love CP3, but the 1st team? Really? smh

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

David West was actually really good defensively this year (because he didn’t have to play help defense).
    .
yeah, of all the people to say that….

  • LLC#12

Ha, “egg on my face”, thanks man, a quick google tells me its happened a total of 4 times, Alvin Robertson in 86, Mutombo in 95, Chandler and now Gasol, so I guess it IS pretty rare.

  • LakeShow

I would switch George and James. And I don’t like your lack of care for no positions haha.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    James didn’t have Roy Hibbert.

  • Max

More than I tought, I was thinking last year it was the first time ever.

  • http://twitter.com/MookDaChosen1 Mook

yeah, strange never seen this before

  • Junior Taylor

Why continue to have a DPOY award when the guy that wins it doesn’t even make the 1st team on defense?

  • Max

    Lol,
    And I quote:

“well i called it. Slam voters once again overrate the most overrated player in the league. top 50, top 12 pf’s for that matter shouldn’t only be outscoring their counterpart by 5 points while being outrebounded. That is not elite. INFACT THE HORNETS WERE BETTER LAST SEASON WITH DAVID WEST ON THE F’N BENCH>>>>>READ THAT TWICE>>>THE HORNETS WERE BETTER LAST SEASON WITH DAVID WEST ON THE F’N BENCH (just incase it didn’t seep in) Don’t believe me? Click my name it will take you right to proof.”
    ——
“Since my comment won’t go through here goes try number 2. THe Hornets as a team were worse off with David West on the court then with him on the bench. THey played better without a top 50 (according to this crazy list) player. Does that make sense to any of you? Do top 15 pf’s REGULARLY get outrebounded by their opponent? Do top 15 pf’s who play at the average pace for the league only average 7.5 rebounds a game? Aldridge is not a shot blocker rebounder extraodinairre or anything, but he doesn’t get beat at those things by his matchup. David West does. If you don’t believe me go to82games.com look at west’s on court off court statistics. to reiterate, if you were choosing a pf would you pick the one that improves his team or makes it worse? would you rather have 3 more points a game or a win?”
    ———-
“david west is better then rashard lewis? thats a joke right? david west the only player underrated to the casual fan but overrated by the more serious fans”
    ——–
“i would rather have nene and rashard then david west.”
    —-
You really didn’t like that guy did you?

  • 23

So basically the dpoy is considered the 3rd best defensive center by NBA coaches?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yep. He WAS extremely overrated. Now he has somehow become underrated. This was his best defensive season by leaps and bounds. And the whole veteran presence thing that he has developed is severely under played. .
Allen can come in here and say I told you so, or you can read what he was saying about him when he left NOLA. That analysis was pretty much spot on.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah because Coaches aren’t scouts/assistants. The Scouts/Assistants should have the votes. Not the coaches who pretty much pay attention to their own team and gameplan around what others tell them.
    .
Seriously, when you are gameplanning, what situation would it ever become relevant to compare every player in the league individually? Beuller?

    lack of care for positions*

    sorry I had to

  • bike

    Well, damn.

  • Hingle McCringleberry

Gasol got DPOY because he’s white. Then he got shortchanged because he’s white. Obvious.

  • Caboose

Still take Georgie boy over Bron, personally. He’s got Melo shooting at 29-70 in the series right now.

  • LakeShow

I sat there for like 3 minutes trying to figure out if I worded that right lol.

  • LakeShow

He’s 5 made buckets away from shooting 50%….

  • Caboose

    6, but good point.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    ROY HIBBERT.
    .
    http://stats.nba.com/playerShotchart.html?PlayerID=2546&SeasonType=Playoffs

    .
Carmelo is 24 for 60 from POINT BLANK RANGE.

  • LakeShow

I feel you overrate Hibbert’s defense, but I don’t like using advanced stats in general, so I guess I must just turn away from this.

  • Caboose

I retract my statement. George for 2nd Team.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s the playoffs total too. the stats against just indiana are even worse. searching currently.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    LOOK AT CARMELO’S SHOT CHART.

    .

Game 1: Carmelo was 3-12 from 0Ft from the Hoop.
    (7 of 16 everywhere else)

Game 2: Carmelo was 7-12 from the paint
(6 of 14 from outside the paint)

Game 3: Carmelo was 2-4 from the paint
(4 of 12 from outside the paint)

    .

Advanced stats or not, it seems like Roy Hibbert is a huge reason Melo is struggling so mightily, just based on the fact that he normally hits 55% of his shots at the rim.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Carmelo’s shooting % outside the paint is 40% in the series.

    .
George is great. But he’s not doing this on his lonesome. He has great help.

  • Caboose

    1. Remove Serge.
    2. Remove Paul.
    3. Remove Chandler.
    4. Upgrade Gasol to 1st Team.
    5. Upgrade Conley to 1st Team.
    6. Add Roy Hibbert to 2nd Team.
    7. Add Andre Iguodala to 2nd Team.

    All fixed.

  • Caboose

Can we all just be happy that Kobe isn’t on this list?

  • spit hot fiyah

mike james must have been like jordan crawford. voter only looked at the last name and brain farted

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Against Indiana, Carmelo is shooting 43% around the hoop.

  • aicomeback

The most ironic part to me is that Marc got the least amount of points total compared to all other players on either team

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

why continue to let the coaches vote?

  • LakeShow

    Yes. lol

  • LakeShow

    Good point…

Hibbert is a real nice anchor because of his length. I should open my eyes to his defensive talents a bit more.

  • danpowers

    just popped a bottle

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s just so huge. As a one on one defender against quick bigs he’s pretty useless. but as a team defender, he’s awesome.

  • danpowers

well… i cant tell if chandler was really better defensively this season and i doubt it, but noah for sure was.

  • LakeShow

Yeah exactly what I was thinking, but with a great defensive team like the Pacers have around him, his defensive talents really shine.

  • playa

Well yeah, but we all/you all would be more than happy if Kobe is not all-nba 1 team, maybe not 2 team either, i suppose.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah no doubt. Weird as it is, if New York played Amar’e instead of Tyson, Hibbert would have to play more honest defense.
    .
it’s not like Tyson is really containing Hibbert anyway.

  • Caboose

I’m fine with Kobe on 2nd team, honestly. I’d PREFER him on 3rd, but he can go 2nd. But, I know he’s undeservedly going on the 1st. We all know that.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

    Yep

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

I am glad you reminded NBK to never disagree with me.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Who made it over Robertson and Dikembe?

  • Junior Taylor

Kobe doesn’t deserve to be on any defensive team..whether it’s the 1st or 10th team.

  • Junior Taylor

I actually think that George deserves to be on the 1st team over Conley.

  • Caboose

Well obviously. But he was talking in reference to the All-NBA teams.

  • Caboose

I put Conley there simply because he was far and away the best PG defender in the L this year. I’m sure nbk has some stats to back that up…

  • maik

this is some bs. 2 years in the row the dpoy is on the all defense 2nd team. makes NO SENSE at all!!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Chandler was better last season. He wasn’t even a top 5 defensive Center this year, by any stretch. (Noah, Gasol, Duncan, Sanders, Hibbert).

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

lol that’s lame that you can’t vote for your own players, obviously there’s bias but is Thibodeau supposed to say that Marc Gasol and Tyson Chandler are better than Noah just because he’s Noah’s coach?

  • danpowers

i wont argue that. the only explanation i have for this is that coaches maybe count his offensive rebounds / tap-outs as defensive plays. but even then i agree on the list of guys you brought up… except maybe sanders. you are right about the scouts and assistants, they should vote for these all nba teams.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Memphis is 8 points better defensively with Conley on the floor (8 points offensively too, 16 points total) over 48 minutes –

Memphis wins the turnover battle by +5 with Conley on the floor vs Off over 48 minutes

    http://www.82games.com/1213/12MEM1.HTM

. Defensive Rating of 95.1 is 2nd only to Tony Allen among heavy minute player’s

. Defensive Rating of 89.5 in Wins is 1st among ALL PLAYERS on the Grizzlies team
    .
(Tony Allen being on the floor with Gasol makes the defensive rating stat more relevant as long as Allen and Gasol are used to illustrate the point, since they are so great, you can’t use Defensive Rating compared to player’s on other teams *except Indiana*)

  • Caboose

    Much appreciated.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

basically, the coaches don’t pay attention to the league in a way that is relevant to voting on awards like this. They aren’t comparing each guy individually. They are looking at entire teams, and guessing at which guys make the biggest impact for which teams.
    .
this is why i never put much stock in the all/nba/defense teams, as the coaches are going to vote on reputation as much as anything.

Second year in a row where DPOY isn’t on the NBA All Defensive First Team. How often does this happen?

  • LLC#12

in 86 the 5 that made it over Robertson were: Paul Pressey, Kevin McHale, Mark Eaton, Sidney Moncrief & Maurice Cheeks. In 95 the guys that got it over Dikembe were: Pippen, Rodman, David Robinson, Payton and Mookie Blaylock.
I got all that from here if you want to have a look:

I’m just glad people are paying attention to the pacers. From an actually getting to watch them play perspective. So little TV exposure, and they don’t exactly play an exciting brand of basketball. I’m okay with your list, and more interested
    in your all nba picks.

  • Bandwagonfan

Cant believe there is acutally some guy who accept the argument of others.especially when its concerning lebron.. Respect to you dude

  • Drig

He’s DESERVEDLY going in the 1st. The only two guys who’ve a case along with Kobe to be in 1st team are CP3 and WB.

TP and Harden have had excellent seasons as well but Kobe’s had the better season.

    IMO : 1st team : CP3, Kobe
    2nd team : WB, Harden
    3rd team : TP, Wade.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    its happened again, stupid

  • Caboose

Please, PLEASE, let’s not start this?

But I wanna open the Pandora’s box.

I just finished my exams. You have them soon. I’ve effectively got HCA in this argument lol.

  • Caboose

That is EVIL. How’d you know I have exams? Haha

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

try and explain how Kobe was DEFINITELY better than Harden this year……go ahead, i’ll entertain you.

    .

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=bryanko01&y1=2013&p2=hardeja01&y2=2013&p3=wadedw01&y3=2013&p4=paulch01&y4=2013&p5=westbru01&y5=2013&p6=parketo01&y6=2013

    .
    .
Hard for me to see how Kobe is definitely one of the two best players on that list.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that 86 season Robertson sneakily was the best defender in the league. that was only his 2nd year, so his reputation wasn’t preceding him yet.
    .
Basically, Tony Allen, defensive recognition wise.

  • Drig

Wade simply doesn’t deserve to be here because he hasn’t faced as much adversity, hasn’t played as many minutes at an elite level nor has he had any notable feat this season. His 3pt shooting has been atrocious this season and his numbers are down across the board this season.

Looking at the stats from SynergySports, the reputations tend
to hold true. Overall, Harden ranks last among the trio with .93 PPP (points per possession) allowed to his man, ranking him 329 in the league. Kobe and Wade, with .84 and .79 PPP allowed respectively, rank much higher.

Defensively, Harden is MUCH worse than Kobe.

This was with Kobe saving his energy on D.

Kobe was simply better than Harden when he was focused on scoring in the 1st half of the season like Harden was THROUGHOUT the season. He had to tone it down and become a distributor and he did this without letting it hindering his game too much. Haven’t seen Harden do that.

Harden has also been much more inconsistent when compared to Kobe and the Rockets play at a ridiculous pace leading to some easy transition buckets for Harden.

And I haven’t even gotten to the injuries. Sans Kobe, the Lakers wouldn’t have usurped the Rockets for the 7th seed. Even though I HATE this argument, team records WILL be considered.

Re: TP has had continuity, a great coach, a 80% Tim Duncan and solid role players who can actually hit open shots and create perimeter spacing.

Pretty sure you know what LAL’s been through.

Look, I don’t hate TP and I honestly believe he’s one of the primary reasons SAS can play at either half-court or semi-transition speed on any possession but IMO, he hasn’t done enough across the board to beat out KB.

    The stats reflect that.

WB is a pretty tough case. I’ve already told Caboose the same.

Simply put, LBJ is lauded for his versatility. Kobe this season has played heavy and necessary minutes for the Lakers this season shifting from scorer to facilitator to off-ball decoy over the course of the season while still maintaining elite production and helping boost his team’s O anyway possible. Let’s face it, team D wouldn’t get LAL past most teams with their O having so many problems.

Also, when the team needed him the most to perform and help push the team into the POs, he delivered 29 points, 53% shooting, 7 rebs, 6 ast with decent D while playing heavy minutes.

Harden tailed off at the very end.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

quick thing before i get my response out —– you have a synergy account?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that’s a very solid argument. i don’t really disagree.

    .

i knew Harden and Bryant were both bad defensively, and i knew Harden was worse, i just didn’t realize he was that much worse.

    .

as you know, Kobe’s issue defensively this year stemmed from what he was doing off the ball, which was nothing. so the PPP stat is a little misleading.

    .

my thing is, i don’t think Kobe was better than Paul or Westbrook this year. i also had him behind Harden until LA caught them in the standing.

  • Drig
  • Drig

Nope. I found it while surfing the net sometime back. I would kill to have one though :( .

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i should have one next season. i’m going to drive you guys nuts, lol

  • Drig

Kobe’s issues have always stemmed from off-ball D. His on-ball D has always been elite at his prime or passable at its absolute worst.

However, it’s also important to note that LAL simply didn’t have continuity. When you want to play D as a team, it’s pivotal for lineups to get some time on the floor to develop chemistry, understand the habits of fellow teammates and do your best to cover any weaknesses.

LAL had none of it. I remember a few games in the middle of the season (pre-ASG ) when it looked like only Kobe and Howard got their rotations right while the rest of the team looked lost. The result was Kobe trying to overcompensate for Blake and cover his man. This left his matchup wide open and he drained the 3.

This happened thrice in the game. In one quarter.

It’s hard to make any argument against WB though.

  • Drig

I follow you. Got a message on my chat feed a few days back.

Best of Luck bro. Ace ‘em!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i always have trouble crediting guys as a top 5/10 player in the league while his team struggles to play together or even enjoy the season. admittedly, that’s the biggest hurdle between me and putting Kobe on the 1st team.

  • Caboose

Haha thanks. I’ll leave you with this: Russ, CP, Parker, Harden all had better seasons than Kobe. Defense.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you should @ one of us. or respond to one of us, only saw this because my mouse was scrolling up so slowly. lol

    .

this was when it was Harden mania. i assume most executives do think Harden is better than Bryant going forward, but I wouldn’t say he’s a better basketball player now. i mean, i see an argument for why he’s more effective, but nah, not a better player.

  • Drig

Great. Someone get nbk feeds of the video analysis Raptors run and we’ll be done here. Might as force nbk to make a blog guys. lol……

I cannot wait to see you drop all sorts of stats after a ton of analysis only for Lakeshow/pposse/redd to simply say ” Advanced Stats suck” .

  • Drig

    Fair enough.

Is your list like this? :

    1st team : CP3, TP

    2nd team : WB, Wade

    3rd team : Kobe, Harden

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    1st: CP3 – WB

    2nd: Parker – Bryant

    3rd: Harden – Wade

  • Drig

Except Kobe’s got the best combo of minutes, stats, adversity faced, skills, clutch time performance of all the guys.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

seriously thinking about starting a blog and not showing anyone.

  • Drig

Fair enough. Thought you might bump Wade up and Kobe down because Wade’s play was an important reason why Miami went on the streak.

Why WB over TP exactly? On O, TP is better IMO. On D, WB is better. TP has the better team record.

This year’s All-NBA lists are gonna create issues one way or the other……

  • Drig

I didn’t know that. Will keep that in mind from here on out.

This was the time Kobe was destroying players left and right from the triple threat position.

I’m starting to think more NBA teams should hire expert NBA analysts as NBA GMs. Regardless of whether they value Harden’s production more because of FTs, atleast they wouldn’t be so idiotic.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s hard to know who is an expert and who is just trusting some formula. idk, the whole way that teams go about finding these people is broken.

  • Drig

Seriously think you’re fooling yourself if you think you can comment publicly about this and not expect everyone to be on high alert on all blog websites.

  • Drig

Do you have a twitter? if you do like reading all sorts of different POV’s on the NBA and basketball, getting a twitter is the best tool available.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Mainly because of Westbrook’s durability (during the season), and how much he truly means to that team on BOTH ends. And i don’t feel like Parker was the best player on his team, so i look at him and Westbrook on even ground, without one having a more important role than the other.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Shouldn’t matter now that I follow you, all your comments will pop up in my network

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well don’t consider these final, still gotta dig a little. But as of today, in my preliminary, haven’t looked one by one yet, i’d go

    1st Team: G – Paul, G – Westbrook, F – James, F – Durant, C – Gasol

    2nd Team: G – Parker, G – Bryant, F – Melo, F – Horford, C – Lopez

    3rd Team: G – Harden, G – Wade, F – George, F – Aldridge, C – Duncan

Aldridge is the one i’m not sure about. it’s between him, Blake Griffin, David Lee, Chris Bosh, David West, and Kevin Garnett. Aldridge was just doing the most with the least. But idk, gotta look closer.

Aside from James, Durant, and Paul. I have trouble being decisive on placement of anyone. If I treat it like the all-star game with no C position it’s even harder. The playoff performances of people are clouding my judgement too. I want to throw Steph Curry some love, but I don’t know where. I’m okay with your list. I might find a way to put Duncan on the second team.
