Mark Cuban Has a Two-Year Plan to Turn the Mavs Into Championship Contenders

The Mavs certainly don’t look like NBA Championship contenders at the moment—the group of guys that won them the ‘chip in 2011 has been entirely disassembled, and the current roster couldn’t even propel them into the Playoffs this past season—but owner Mark Cuban has a plan, one he claims could bring the franchise back to the top within two years. Via ESPNDallas: “Mark Cuban’s goal is to make the Dallas Mavericks a championship team again within a two-year window. After Dallas missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 years, the owner vowed the Mavs would have a ‘quick rebuild.’ The pending pitch to free agents this summer — including Chris Paul and Dwight Howard — is that the franchise can take a significant step forward next season and then have the salary-cap space available again in 2014 to make more major upgrades. ‘We want to be a championship team. We’ve never said we have to be a championship team this year,’ Cuban said Saturday on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM during his first interview since the Mavs’ season ended. ‘We want to be a better team, a top-seed team. If we get the top free agent, that doesn’t leave us a whole lot of flexibility to add a lot of players, but we have a good nucleus around them. We know we’ll have a good team, but we won’t know if we have a great team. If you look at this like a two-year plan, then we think we’re on a track to have a great team by the end of next year.’ … NBA tampering rules prevent Cuban from discussing specific free agents, but it’s no secret that Plan A and B are Howard and Paul, not necessarily in that order.”

In two years, LeBron’s coming off his contract with Miami. So is Carmelo with the Knicks. This year, its Dwight and CP3. Signing at least two of those guys would help the Mavericks in their goal(basically, every team with at least two of these guys will). The role players are important though, because one or two guys can only do so much.

theres literally zero chance Lebron or Carmelo will sign to Mavericks. and theres extremely poor (basically none) chance Dwight or Chris will sign there too. so with that said, after two years of struggles Dallas will start rebuilding

No one is going to play with Dirk, sorry Cuban. OJ is all you can get.

  • Jacob Nelson

They could easily pick up additional star power this summer. Dallas is a great city, Cuban has lots of money to throw around and they are only a piece or two from returning to the finals.

It’ll take more than 2 years unless they get some of the major free agents. If they had CP3, Dirk & Dwight that would be pretty impressive – however as we’ve seen with Miami and this year LA – buying stars doesn’t translate to instant success, they still need time to play with each other, and you need to build your role players around them. Who do they have as defensive specialists? And, I don’t see them getting CP3 + Dwight!

how’s the syrup in Canada RKJ92?

  • roscoe

    he’s done. PRINT IT.

Give me one good reason why no big free agent would want to play with Dirk. He’s unselfish, the city has a good arena and fanbase, and they would have made the playoffs this year if Dirk hadn’t missed time. I’ve probably been watching the game longer than you’ve been alive. And no, it couldn’t be applied to any NBA team. No more than 5 teams have the cap space to sign either CP3 or D12.

  • roscoe

One good reason = dirK is over d’hill
Another good reason = DAL doesn’t have a good PG

    dirk is unselfish.
    DAL has a good arena.
    DAL has a fan base
    Thanks captain obvious.

congratulations on your game watching claim… have a cookie

    wake up JN

Dirk is over the hill like Duncan is over the hill. He does more than enough to where if you surround him with 1-2 all star caliber players he’ll win a championship. He was over the hill 2 years ago when they won the ring. Collison won’t be the starting point guard by the time the upcoming season rolls around. You’re a fool if you think that just because Dirk was injured this year he’s over the hill. Check your stats and check your facts.
