Memphis Grizzlies Push OKC Thunder to the Brink of Elimination

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Kevin Durant stared into the basketball abyss, and this is what he saw: an endless maze of long Memphis Grizzlies arms.

It’s become an all-too familiar sight for Durant, who has gotten little to no help through four games of this second round Playoff series, and now the Grizz are one win away from reaching the Western Conference Finals.

KD and his coach, Scott Brooks, tried to keep their heads up in the postgame press conference following a crushing 103-97 overtime defeat, but the writing appears to be on the wall for them.

Per the Oklahoman:

In a game that NBA history says the Thunder had to have, the Boomers squandered a 17-point second-quarter lead, a 12-point third-quarter lead and lost 103-97 in overtime Monday night to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Griz now lead this Western Conference semifinal series three games to one. Only eight of 194 teams that have been down 3-1 have advanced.

“I thought our guys did everything they possibly could do to put themselves in position to win this game,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. “Unfortunately, we came up a little bit short.” [...] “We could have done a much better job there.” The Thunder will have at least one more chance. “It’s not over yet,” Brooks said. “They’re in a good position, but our challenge is not impossible.”

OKC’s challenge isn’t impossible, but it’s incredibly daunting.

With Russell Westbrook in street clothes until next season, Kevin Durant will have to carry even more of the load for the Thunder against this Grizzlies team in order to extend his team’s season. Problem is that no matter how heroically KD plays, it might not be enough against Memphis.

No Harden, starting PG injured, it’s a wrap. That jarhead from Houston who submarined Westbrook – that’s who the Grizzlies should thank for this victory.

  • Redd

    Lol submarined?

You been sounding more stupid per day.

  • shockexchange

“Submarined” is a football term – it’s when you hit a guy below the knees … preferably with your should pads. the Shock Exchange can think of a hundred scenarios that can come from that, and none of them are positive. That jarhead from Houston knew exactly what he was doing … trust.

  • Redd

I know what it is, it simply wasn’t the situation.

I highly doubt you in all your idiotic 3rd person talk can be at liberty to say what the guys intention was. Cause it may surprise you..but you’re a nobody commentator who doesn’t play in the NBA.

    Crazy huh?

  • Redd

This team isn’t advancing I don’t believe, they look so mortal.

It’s like when they got Durant and sucked so bad that they managed to get Westbrook as well.

  • shockexchange

When a guy is running towards you, there is no reason to ever lower your shoulder into his knee … unless … er … you’re tryna to hurt him. The Shock Exchange played football in HS, and he has put a lot of people out of commission. “You ain’t bout that life …”

  • danpowers

tell me again westrbook isnt a top 3 pg

When will the chorus against Scott Brooks reach a crescendo.

  • Redd

..it’s called trying to get a steal? Lol you make no sense.

  • shockexchange

Trying to get a steal … from across a guy’s body? Westbrook has gotten knocked down thousands of times. It’s part of the game, but he was furious at that jarhead from Houston. Why do you think that is? And “Lol you make no sense?” Shakespeare would say “Thy doth protest too much.” <—- "… that's that ish he don't like."

    Wednesday.

How do you all think it would’ve gone if Westbrook played?

  • bike

Hate to see Durant exit this early in the playoffs. His play has been otherworldly. His handle boggles the mind and there is nothing offensively he can’t do well. The marquee finals match up would have been Thunder/Heat IMO. Oh well.

you gotta slow down that disrespect man. lol

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

he isn’t no charlie ward lol jk

next season. nothing coming of that without Westbrook. especially after Sam Presti’s glaring mistake at the beginning of the season.
    .
And with that being said, I can’t believe anybody supported the Harden trade to begin with.

  • Fat Lever

Legitimate question. Who had the worse supporting cast, Lebron in Cleveland in 2007 or KD this year with no Russ? Granted I agree that Memphis is tougher than any team Cleveland faced in the East then.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Well they would have won last night that’s for sure. The shaky ball handling by Fisher and Jackson hurt them. Plus his D on Conley would slow the Grizz down.

  • chyea

They may not have beaten Memphis even with Westbrook

  • MUBWAR

please stop typing in the 3rd person? is that how you talk to your family members? your wife? wife….lool who am I kidding?

  • Da-Meat-Hook

“It’s been an all too familiar sight for Durant, who has gotten little to no help…”

    Reggie Jackson had 15/4/8
Ibaka had 17/14 and 3 blocks
    Martin had 18/5
    Collison had 10 points

Those 4 players shot a combined 55% from the floor.

I completely agree that Durant’s supporting cast has been underwhelming this series, but they battled and had a solid night last night.

That being said, Perkins has been putting up Joel Anthony numbers.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange walks, talks and does exactly as he pleases. You know why WUBWAR? Cause when gets half a step on you, he ‘gon hit you with the floater.

    lol

Westbrook is a G, he brings a whole different sort of intensity to the game that very few players right now have. We all can only imagine how Westbrook would have wanted to torch Conley in game 4 after being nominated to the all defensive 2nd team. The guy takes a lot of things personally, he would have used all the awards that went to Memphis (all defensive team honors) as motivation.

I don know how the series would have played out, Memphis is solid; hopefully they take the ship

  • Redd

..so Westbrooks reaction directly states that it had to be an intentional hit?

If you see which way he reaches in..it’s towards the ball you dummy.

  • shockexchange

More personal attacks to camouflage your weak argument? C’mon Redd you’re better than that. “Dummy?” You’re protesting way too loudly … <—- "… that's that ish he don't like."

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Careful MUBWAR, I get the feeling shockexchange is ‘gon hand out that fiddy…

  • pposse

    i say memphis in 7

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

charlie ward, ncaa quarterback heisman winner turned ny knick point guard.

  • shockexchange

    Da-Meat-Hook bout that life!

  • robb

I don’t think Beverly did that on purpose, he just went after a steal with poor defensive skills, and he ended up injuring Russ.

  • robb

I’m kind of glad, I don’t like KD. Everybody seems to love him and say he’s the greatest guy in the world but there’s something about him I hate. Not his game, obviously he’s a fantastic player.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Thunder in 6. These games have been going down to the last 2 minutes. With Westbrook, OKC has the clear advantage in those scenarios.

  • shockexchange

He went in for a steal across Westbrook’s body at “knee level,” knowing in advance there would be a high probability (> 75% chance) his shoulder would connect with Westbrook’s knee forcefully. Let’s just leave it at that.

  • LP @ThisisEther

2010 Joel anthony or 2011 Joel Anthony???

  • LP @ThisisEther

    Lebron in Cleveland, easily………

  • LP @ThisisEther

    He isn’t a top 3 pg.

  • http://twitter.com/_brandonallen Brandon Allen

Kendrick Perkins is terrible…He needs to be on the bench….He’s always put up Joel Anthony numbers and everyone gives him a pass cuz he scowls…pshaw..

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    ’10 Joel Anthony averaged 2 and 3.
    ’11 averaged 3 and 3.

    Take your pick :)

  • spit hot fiyah

by the all-nba team criteria he was top 2 for the last 2 seasons

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

LeBron easily. It’s not even close.

  • danpowers

i know who charlie ward is ;) the comparison was still funny

  • danpowers

you dont need to like his style of play, i dont like that neither. but you gotta credit what he does for his team.

  • MUBWAR

sorry I couldn’t reply, I was working (something us adults call: responsibilities). If the best you got is a floater, my dream shake can take of it. But seriously, do you yell at your mom like THE SHOCK EXCHANGE IS HUNGRY.

  • shockexchange

    LOL.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    gracias

  • danpowers
