Mike D’Antoni Fired Assistant Coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Chuck Person

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni will have a smaller staff next season — Bernie Bickerstaff and Chuck Person have been let go, the team announced. Per the LA Daily News: “Coach Mike D’Antoni told assistant coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Chuck Person they would not return to the Lakers’ coaching staff next season, according to Lakers spokesman John Black. D’Antoni had kept all of Mike Brown’s assistants after he was fired following a 1-4 start while hiring his brother, Dan, to help oversee his offense after spending time on his staff in Phoenix and New York. But it was expected D’Antoni would at least somewhat alter his staff after the season ended. Bickerstaff went 4-1 as an interim coach following Brown’s firing, and has been considered one of Brown’s most influential mentors. Person remained the last connection to Phil Jackson’s staff. Brown kept Person when he was hired in May 2011, and was also kept upon D’Antoni’s arrival. Person’s main responsibility under Jackson and Brown mostly involved the team’s defense. Under D’Antoni, Person mostly worked on players’ shooting mechanics and specifically worked with Dwight Howard on post moves and free-throw shooting. [...] Yet, Dan D’Antoni, Clifford, Darvin Ham and Phil Handy are still on the Lakers’ staff.”

Chuck Person’s duty as coach was to preside over the defense……
    .
he wasn’t part of the problem?

The wheels of the bus go round and round …. round and round … as the theme from “Jeopardy” plays ad in finitum

Yeah when I first read it I was like “what?!?” didn’t know The Rifleman have defensive know-hows.

well eventually he got some of his defensive duties stripped by D’Antoni. So it’s hard to know how much defensive acumen he really carried as a coach.

True. Actually Bernie was doing a better job than him by just letting he team play freely.

Mike D’Antoni is at it again! Bickerstaff is a very good assistant and led the Lakers to a 4-1 record! D’Antoni will be out of a job very soon. Read More at: http://www.rantsports.com/nba/2013/05/07/los-angeles-lakers-coach-mike-dantoni-fires-bernie-bickerstaff/

Mitch Kupchak turn in your Badge , you are nothing close to Jerry West , D’antoni should have never been hired. What going on with Byron Scott.

Brown and Jackson’s teams played decent defense.

you don’t remember this conversation about Mike Brown? Brown’s reputation as a defensive coach messed with people’s perception of the Lakers.
    .
Under Jackson they were a top 5 defense. Under Brown they regressed to 14th, and then in the 5 games he coached this season they were 30th. He didn’t seem to know how to handle a defensive team where only 3-4 players play defense at any given time.

Bernie Bickerstaff is a far better coach than D’Antoni who will never win an NBA Championship. I cannot believe the nepotism he has at the hiring of his brother!! to run the Laker offense this past season. D’Antoni had a great Assistant Coach in Bickerstaff to run his offense, why hire his brother? The Lakers need to get rid of Mitch Kupchak and hire Randy Pfund who was responsible for the success of The Miami Heat when he was GM. Enough said!

I can’t believe it, Dumbtoni fires the only successful offensive coach (4-1) on his staff, now all they have to run the offense is Dumb and Dumber. If this is Mitch’s vision of the future, then he should pack his bags now because next season will be a wreck.

  • Sam

His brother is called Dan D’Antoni?!

D’Antoni Defence is an oxymoronic term.
