Paul Pierce’s Family Reportedly Preparing to Leave Boston

The Boston Celtics will have their head coach back on the sidelines next season, but the face of the franchise could be gone this summer. GM Danny Ainge won’t say what the team’s plans for Paul Pierce are, but according to the Boston Globe, Pierce’s family is already packing up their stuff: “The Celtics have to decide by June 30 whether to buy out Pierce’s contract at $5 million. Ainge said the sides have not had discussions, but an NBA source said Pierce’s family is already beginning to prepare for relocation from Boston, assuming the Celtics will execute the buyout or trade his expiring contract in the offseason. Pierce struggled mightily during the playoffs, and Ainge was asked whether the longtime Celtic was injured. ‘Paul’s always battling little things,’ said Ainge. ‘I think Paul’s healthy, but he played so hard and carried such a heavy load. Paul had a terrific year this year, but in the playoffs, New York did a good job of taking away his strengths and taking advantage of some of our weaknesses. But I thought Paul had a terrific year.’ As for (Kevin) Garnett, he has two years left on his contract but is considering retirement. He turns 37 Sunday. ‘I don’t think I have the answers that Kevin will want,’ Ainge said. ‘So I’ve got to figure there’s a lot to do [before we talk], and I think there’s a lot of questions in Kevin’s mind, as there is every year, to determine whether he’s coming back. I’m not ready to answer everything that he will want to know.’”

I really can’t picture Pierce in another uniform. Like Ewing not in a Knicks jersey, or Nique not in a Hawks uniform. It’s gonna be sad and strange if he joins another team.

  • The Mauve Avenger

I will be disgusted if he participates in team stacking. If he does I think it’s safe to say it’s the end of an era in the NBA.

  • slamson

As a Celtics fan and a big fan of Pierce’s I think at this point in his career his going to a team where he can win another title before retiring doesn’t constitute “team stacking.” I would be sad to see him play anywhere else, but I’d be really sad to see him finish up his career somewhere miserable – I wish him better than that.

  • KingBenjamin

If the Clippers could sign Paul Pierce if he is bought out by Boston the Clippers would have to be legitimate title contenders assuming they re-sign Chris Paul.

    Potential Starting 5:

    PG Chris Paul
SG Willie Green or Jamal Crawford (Billups is unlikely to re-sign)
    SF Paul Pierce
    PF Blake Griffin
    C DeAndre Jordan

    Pretty legitimate starting 5

  • Cade

Uh, that “era” you are talking about ended about 10 years ago.

  • The Mauve Avenger

By team stacking I don’t mean going to a team with a better chance at a title. I mean him and some combination of Dwight/CP3/Josh Smith etc. getting together and planning a move to a team like Houston or Dallas thus stacking the roster with stars like Dirk or Harden. I see what you mean though about wanting the best for him.

  • The Mauve Avenger

Yea I see what you mean ,but I was still hoping it wasn’t impossible for a player to retire with the team that drafted him nowadays.

  • cramzy

Man, I saw Ewing in a Supersonics jersey the other day and was like “when this happen?!!!”. Just didn’t look right.

  • spit hot fiyah

yeah if he is bought out he should sign with the bobcats

  • ubestnotmiss

    he already did in 2008

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

All of the really good teams in NBA history have participated in “team stacking”

  • bike

Maybe, if he was willing to take a big pay cut, he could sign on with the Heat. He could reunite with his good buddy Ray and maybe win a chip or two.

    …..just kidding.

  • JML-G

gonna throw up if Pierce plays elsewhere next season

  • VanCityBBall

Paul Pierce.. WITHOUT Celtic green? can’t picture it…

  • Lloyd

So you expect Paul Pierce, a star in the NBA, in the twilight years of his career, to go to a team that’s rebuilding and has no legitimate shot at a championship to avoid “team stacking”? This isn’t the Decision. He isn’t deciding on going to another team, he’s getting the boot.

  • Lloyd

Ain’t no loyalty in sports anymore. Keep him on, give him a smaller role Ainge. Dude’s been a Celtic through and through, and there were some pretty horrible times too. Let him retire in the green and white on his own terms. He’s only got one, maybe two years TOPS left anyway.

  • Mars

IF they draft right, IF is the key, at number 16, they have a good enough young core to contend in the east. Rondo, Bradley, Green, Sulli, and Melo (Fab). They tend to draft well then give their assets away for practically nothing. On their board should be Gourgi Dieng, & Mason Plumlee for that 16th pick. Get a steal with Siva and/or Khalif Wyatt (sleeper). Maybe add Kadji or Murphy stretch 4/5 and you gucci…but Danny Ainge is a crab. Off the bench you got Twill, Pierce, Terry, Lee, Wilcox. Whoa

  • @iamMrjump

I agree with the commentary The Truth came along way from being stabbed over 8 times… A true Captain lead the C’s through bad & good times… #34 gets raised in TD BankNorth if he goes anywhere should be to Springfield Mass to the HALL OF FAME

  • MikeC.

Seeing big Pat in a Magic uniform was much worse

  • CBills4Life

Billups isn’t going to resign? Why wouldn’t he.. He is a leader, a coach, and makes big shots on the court. CP3 loves having him as the other backcourt player and Chauncey already said if the Clippers don’t resign him he’s going to retire.

Also, we don’t want DeAndre Jordan as our starting center anymore. He proved us he can’t rebound, score, shoot freethrows, develop a post, and get a jumper. He got demolished in the playoffs this year with the Grizzlies. Hopefully we can draft a young center who can score off the dribble and has a jumper.

  • Mrbizzle

It would be golden if the lakers traded their young players with minimum contracts for pierce and throw him n the starting lineup
    Nash
    Kobe
    Pierce
    Gasol
    Howard

    Epic lineup right there

  • RKJ92

All you did was name the same Clippers starting lineup without Billups, and adding Paul Pierce, and you actually think this makes them better? you realize how dumb that idea is right? you think adding a player on the brink of retirement that cannot play defense for his life, and struggles with his offense now makes the CLIPPERS *who got CRUSHED first round* an instant and legitimate title contender? — pure genius –

  • RKJ92

More like an Epic retirement home.. that team would get CRUSHED.. offense oriented teams will never win it all.. there’s something called DEFENSE and between you and me.. it wins championships.. and don’t try to tell me Howard will carry the defensive load because he can’t, and he wouldn’t. He would get in foul trouble QUICK from the pg, sg, sf, and pf attacking the basket because his teamates wouldn’t be able to stay glued to their man, and then emotionally he would crumble just like we saw in the playoffs this year with the Lakers.

stop crying. ni66as come n go

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    agreed

  • BBaller

how has the spurs done this?

  • LP @ThisisEther

The loyalty was giving him a 5 million dollar buyout, and allowing him to pick what team he want to.play for next….you can’t expect the Celtics to let him stay on the roster for 15 million….

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

They were stacked with 3 studs in their prime…TP, Manu, and Duncan. Just cause they were drafted there doesn’t mean they weren’t stacked

  • Clos1881

Billups hasn’t made a big shot in years only thing he should be doing a bench next year is coaching

  • Clos1881

What should he do if the C’s buy him out he’s a vet he’s only playing for championships at this point. To me he would be good in Memphis okc

  • Clos1881

Man you not contending with that lineup you keep pierce with a healthy rondo and kg and let it play out rondo changes the dynamic of this entire team rondo makes the game easier for all them then you add a improved green healthy sully and a solid vet you’re capable of going to the finals. The heat are not as good as people think and Dwayne wade is on a rapid decline.

  • 23

I can’t help but think that the DRob-Duncan combo is one of the most overlooked in nba history.

  • CBills4Life

He hasn’t made big shots? You don’t watch basketball, my friend.

  • Mars

    ok

  • Clos1881

Lol clearly you been stuck in a time capsule the last time billups made any big shots was his first year in Denver and he’s been declining ever since

  • Lloyd

Even if they buyout his contract for $5 million, the C’s will still be in luxury tax territory, which means they wouldn’t have room to make any moves unless they find people willing to trade good pieces for the likes of Terry, Lee, or maybe Bass. Also, the draft is weak this year. There’s nothing substantial the Celtics can do to put them in title contention or in a good place to rebuild anyway…

What do the C’s gain by buying him out? They lose a guy who can still hit shots and make plays for himself better than half the guys in the league. With Rondo coming back, he’ll shoulder a lot less of the offence too, making him more effective and straining him less. If Pierce comes back, KG comes back too, otherwise he’s probably retiring. Pick up PP’s player option, let him play out the year, and let him (and KG) retire as a Celtic. Blow up the roster and rebuild around Rondo and Green after that. The franchise owes the Truth as much.

what if they want to tank for Jabari or Wiggins?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I mean at the time DRob was not nearly as dominant as he used to be

  • Lloyd

A team of Rondo, Bradley, Terry, Green, Bass, and Lee under Doc Rivers couldn’t be an obviously tanked season.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

He hasn’t made a big shot in years. FACT.

  • blackthought

buyin` out P2? business wise if they want to crash everything – but come`on – i know danny ainge would trade his grandma, if he thought it`ll be a wise move (like tradin`pierce, it ain`t)… pierce gotta be a celtic 4 life, he didn`t leave when they sucked, delievered a chip, is still ballin` – what else do u want?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

rondo won’t be back until at the earliest halfway through next season. And that team is not very good…I mean with KG and PP they barely made it to the playoffs…without they will struggle.

  • dookie

This is the dumbest comment I have ever read.

T-Will just got busted for threatening his X-Girlfriend with a gun. Boston has no tolerance for guys who play with guns. Bye bye. I expect Danny to explore trade options for Pierce rather than eating his contract. It is possible that Danny will explore trade options for Rondo and Jeff Green as well as KG and Paul. If it gets him the players he wants to rebuild with. Personally, I would like to see them reload for one more season with a healthy Sullinger and Rondo, Jeff Green and Jason Terry with better defined roles, and a better supporting cast than last season. Courtney Lee, Chris Wilcox and Jordan Crawford are not in the teams future plans. But could be of value to another team. If Paul and KG both are gone. Then I would like to see (C) Big Al Jefferson team up with Rondo, Avery, Green and Bass/Sullinger. They will miss KG’s defense and leadership, but they will gain in offense, and Big Al still manages 20/10.

  • Lloyd

He’ll be back by January. It’s more accurate to say they barely made the playoffs without Rondo, which is far more impressive seeing as how big Rondo is to the Celtics. I thought they’d have 0 offense after he went down, but they pulled it together to make it to the post season. He’ll make a huge impact when he comes back which I think you’re down playing.

Doc coming back shows that he thinks Pierce and, in turn, KG will come back too. That’s the same team they were this year, but with their general back. I wouldn’t count them out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

what about all those stories of PP heading out?

  • Lloyd

A quote from Pierce taken a couple of months back: “You know, I want to retire as a Celtic, that’s been my
longtime goal. But it’s not in my control. The organization, they make
their decisions, but it’s something I desire.”

By all indications, Paul wants to play another season or two. He wants that to be in the green and white, but that’s up to the Celtics to decide if they want him or not. If they don’t, he’ll end up some place else because he wants to play. He’s not going to give up basketball because the Celtics give up on him. If he had it his way, he’d play maybe one more year for the Celtics, then retire on his own terms. This article and others like it are Pierce and his family preparing for the possibility where the Celtics don’t allow him to do that.
