Sam Presti: Thunder Won’t Amnesty Kendrick Perkins

Thunder GM Sam Presti said the team will not amnesty Kendrick Perkins, who’s due $18.63 million over the next two seasons, and that the Thunder believe Perkins has “a lot of value to our team.” Didn’t look that way in the Playoffs… From the Oklahoman:

Being 6’10″ must come with a good feeling

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

    But why? He’s useless.

  • Frits

What if he evolves to Charles Oakley

They are a small market. And he makes like 9 mill. His value is that they can’t pay him just to go away. But they won’t say that of course.

If they were to amnesty him, would a Durant-Ibaka-Collison starting front court work? or would it be D-I-T(Thabeet)?

  • Junior Taylor

    Not in a gazillion years

  • Junior Taylor

I don’t care how much it costs me financially, I would do everything in my power to get rid of what is possibly the worst starter of all-time.

  • LLC#12

He is terrible. Terrible terrible terrible. You get mountain goats that pose more of an offensive threat than he does. At 6’10, 4.2ppg in 25mpg is incredible. If Thabeet can even slightly live up to being a 2nd overall pick, he’d be a big upgrade. I like Collison, but he is more of an impact player off the bench than a starter imo.

  • Chukaz

Thabeet put up similar numbers to Perkins but in 14 minutes instead of 25.

If Same Presti won’t amnesty Perkins, he’s gotta let Scott Brooks go. If you won’t get rid of the player, get rid of the guy that keeps giving the player minutes. At this point perkins is useless. They kept him instead of Harden (you take his contract off the books and Maybe they woulda made Harden’s contract work. they were 5 million dollars apart over 4 years. You take Perkins 8 mill of the books and Harden works without a problem) because they needed his D against elite big centers. He’s never stopped Howard, so IDK how he got a Howard Stopper rep, and Gasol and Zach Randolph just ate him alive. A series against a team like Memphis is the sole reason you keep this guy and how does he repay you? With the lowest post season PER in the history of basketball. If Brooks won’t bench perkins, Brooks’ gotta go. If Presti won’t fire Brooks, Presti’s gotta go.

    you’re spot on nbk…

Remember how hotly debated this whole, should they or shouldn’t they have traded Harden thing was a while back? well looking back on the season clearly they shouldn’t have.but they shouldn’t have traded Serge Ibaka either because let’s face it, he’s the only other big man who isn’t Kendrick Perkins and Collison get’s in foul trouble a lot. They should’ve amnestied perkins last year and taken their chances with being able to stop dwight(which is probably the only reason they haven’t decided to let him go now, they want to see where a healthy dwight lands). In fact, they probably never should have traded Jeff Green for Perkins. Can you imagine the grizzlies trying to stop a lineup of Reggie Jackson,Harden, Durant, Jeff Green, and Ibaka? with Collison coming off the bench when they didn’t want to use small ball? OKC literally would’ve run them off the floor. Danny Ainge was right.

  • Datkid

agree with everything you said, it’s been time to get brooks outta here. but Kendrick did use to give Dwight problems. Or at least he was part of it. Kevin Garnett probably had something to do with it too, but still.

  • Ugh

Hell, after one failed post-season without their second-best player, they should probably blow up the whole team and start the rebuilding process now. And it’s all because of Perk.

  • Ugh

Thabeet can set screens. Perkins can. When your best player is a jump shooter and diver, you need screens. That’s why they keep Perkins on the floor.

  • Clydesays

He’s always been limited, but now he’s declining. Dunno if it’s injuries or what, but he’s a 15 mpg backup at this point. Remember, he signed what most people thought was a ‘bargain’ contract at the time…

LOL yo dont ROy Hibbert make $80 million and Amare $100 -_- (Knicks fan)

  • jmm

Yeah exactly. Their thinking is that if they have to pay him they may as well have him with their team, in their practise for their other bigs to go against.

  • TV63

Dude is delusional! OKC will never advance as long as they foolishly believe Perkins is their center. He’s a dead weight anchor dragging them down to the bottom. Over and over he gets outplayed big big men like Gasol, Randolph, Duncan and even Bogut! . It’s to the point whereas bench centers in the league are more productive than he is. He’s great at getting angry and that’s about it.

  • RunNGun

They will amnesty Russell Westbrook instead.

  • LP @ThisisEther

I think the window to amnesty Perkins has passed, this option was great to maybe try to keep Harden….No reason to amnesty him now….who would they use the cap space on??? IF they’re stuck with him on payroll, just keep him and his valuable 5 fouls…But youre right, he shouldn’t be playing….hope Jeff Withey comes right in and starts over him…

  • Steve

Perkins Reggie and Martin are lookin a bit useless at this point. Westbrook would have to be a different person for okc to get the most out of Martin, Reggie Jackson will never be able to move his legs fast enough to match the tempo Westbrook creates and Perkins would be fired if he worked like this in any other form of a job. He hasn’t been doing a damn thing

  • macaroni

9 mill is still a lot of money for screens lol

  • Datkid

F*CK HIS 5 FOULS,THEY CAN FIND SOMEBODY BETTER. AND AT LEAST THEY HAVE CAP SPACE, HE LITERALLY DOES NOTHING GET HIM OUTTA HERE.

  • Datkid

smh are you trying to tell me I’m overreacting?

  • ErnieD

As nice as I thought it would be to have Perk back in Boston, his body is wearing down, and is far less productive than he was 5 seasons ago, this was a guy who has been in the NBA for the better part for 10 years now and is still under 30. That’s a lot of punishment. He can’t block shots like he used to, and can’t elevate against taller centers. Still, If they ate some of his contract, perhaps the Celtics would take him back for Brandon Bass. Bass would give them a rebounding PF/SF who can start or come off the bench. Celtics will likely keep Jared Sullinger and Jeff Green to fill those roles now. Having Perk back might inspire Pierce and KG to stick around, make Rondo happy with better screens… and possibly bring Perk back to “Beastly” status.

Kendrick Perkins is OKC’s weakest link…he doesn’t produce in any way!!!
