Steph Curry Happy the Knicks Didn’t Draft Him, Wants to Play in the Bay ‘Forever’

There is, of course, a love affair between Stephen Curry and Golden State Warriors fans. Not only is Curry thrilled the New York Knicks didn’t nab him in the 2009 NBA Draft, he hopes to never leave the Bay Area. Per Sports on Earth: “Four years ago, Curry was disappointed that the Knicks didn’t draft him. Today, he has the key to the city. (San Francisco, not Oakland… not yet.) Stephen Curry has been special all his life, but he’s never been more special, and more revered, than he is right now, in this city. ‘You wanna know how much this place loves their Warriors?’ he says. ‘We made it to the conference semifinals and they gave me a freaking key to the city. The key to the city! For the semis! If we’d have won the title, they’d have put a statue of Coach Jackson on top of the bridge.’ [...] As you might expect, the playoffs changed things for Curry, immediately. ‘It’s crazy how quickly it shifted on me, in a good way, but in a very different way,’ he says. ‘I’m learning what I can do and what I can’t do. [My wife and I] went out to California Pizza Kitchen on a Friday night and were just mobbed. I mean, people were real nice; they’ve been through 20 terrible years, and this has meant so much for them. But whew, we weren’t ready for that. No more CPKs on Friday nights.’ [...] ‘No offense to New York, but I’m so, so happy I didn’t fall to them in the draft,’ he says after I tell him I’m a Knicks fan. ‘No matter what they do with the new arena, they better not change the dynamics of the fanbase. If we have the same fans, in this new place … man, I’d want to play here forever. Wouldn’t you?’”

Another player afraid of the bright lights of NYC and the NY media.

If the Bay is fine with semi’s good for them. Semi’s in NY was a failure.

  • spit hot fiyah

    a lot of failure lately

  • LP @ThisisEther

….and you should continue to get used to failure…your team is built for failure…..embrace your failure…I don’t see the knicks even getting out of the First round next year to even compete in the “failure” round…..

  • Redd

I love SF, great city and glad there’s a team there which matches that cities’ aura.

  • GSW Fan

how far the NY make it again?

  • GSW Fan

    did*

  • GSW Fan

They’re not gonna keep being happy with semis, we just weren’t expected to go this far. The knicks are considered title contenders so ofcourse their fans are disappointed

  • underdog

Dude, what he was supposed to say? That he would have loved to play for the Knicks, because omg NYC! And the same time hurt the feelings of all of those people who believed in him through his numerous ankle injuries, and who cheered for him in the playoffs? He is not afraid, he’s just not Dwight Howard.

i think it’s more about the whole, the Knicks are run by a bunch of bumbling idiots thing.

  • GMR

Its not being afraid, it has mostly to do with people being comfortable in their own skin and not needing a bunch of superficial hype surrounding them day after day when they are a marginal playoff team with totally pampered and underachieving players. That NY crap is wack anyway. Bunch of pop stars out there sucking

  • danpowers

    sad but true

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This we share sadness about. The NBA, and the nbk need the Knicks to be a great team for their happiness.

  • MikeC.

Say word. When 1994 is the highlight of my sports fandom, and we didn’t even win, things are sad.

  • MikeC.

Props to Donnie Walsh. How could NY let him go? It makes me want to go all Hulk-rage.

  • Dagger

There are some pretty bright lights in San Francisco. And I wouldn’t judge someone for preferring that city over NYC (much as I love both places).

  • danpowers

YOU!? are talking about yourself in the third person? im drunk so ill need to check back online here tomorrow to see if i really read that lol

  • danpowers

that 93/94 knicks team brought me to basketball n so changed my life forever. its so sad that we probably wont ever see a team with the same guts again in nyc as long as the team is being run by those (insert insult) we got now

Well to bad that their team just re build after curry ankle injuries recent years” too bad curry drops 50 there

  • Bandwagonfan

They face the spurs and almost won 3 times withot oneof their vital bigman. Dlee play because he love the team.when he shouldnt be.

  • COYNE

Put perfectly. New York, overrated nonsense. City isn’t even that fun.

  • COYNE

I’m a British guy travelled across most states last year, NY my least favourite City i visited. San Fran, Chi much more enjoyable places to play basketball i imagine. The whole ‘bigger is better’ superficial crap is too much.

  • Max

I think they should be happy after going 8-1 in the previous 2 years in the first round.

  • danpowers

how they could let him go? that is pretty simple: walsh is thinking basketball while dolan is thinking business. that didnt match

  • Ozair

They made it as far as GS made it…

  • Ozair

I think everyone misunderstood, I’m not comparing the cities, or the fans, I was speaking strictly about expectations, and pressure.

  • pposse

still think the GS Warriors was just a flash in the frying pan
