Unhappy Amar’e Stoudemire Wants to Discuss His Role With the Knicks

According to Amar’e Stoudemire, New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson never gave him a chance to flourish alongside Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler. Injuries, poor play and commons sense would disagree with STAT’s assertions, but still, Stoudemire would like to chat with Woody about his ever-diminishing role prior to next season. Per the NY Daily News: “Amar’e Stoudemire knows his contract won’t allow him to go anywhere and he wants Mike Woodson to make a commitment to make a frontcourt of Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler work. ‘We never gave it a chance,’ Stoudemire said after Indiana’s 106-99 victory eliminated the Knicks from the postseason. ‘So I think just the opportunity of allowing them to understand exactly what my style of play is and what I bring to the table is something that I think I’m going to have to sit down with Coach Woody and express to him.’ Stoudemire, who had knee surgery in October and again in March, was limited to 29 regular-season games and four in the postseason. He came off the bench in all 33 games and became a forgotten man in Games 5 & 6 against Indiana as Woodson elected to bench the $100 million forward in the second half of both. ‘It’s tough, it’s tough,’ he said. ‘It’s never easy to sit there and watch. But again, it’s Coach’s decision.’ Stoudemire has two years remaining on his uninsured contract and is nearly impossible to trade. He produced one field goal and zero rebounds in six minutes on Saturday.”

Stoudemire should try to stay on the court before he complains about more playing time/touches. It’s time for Stoudemire to realize that he may never reach his all-star level of play because of all the injuries and learn to contribute to his team in other ways like rebounding and defense, especially if all the touches are going to go to Carmelo and JR. I just wish Stoudemire worked more on his rebounding and post game when he actually still had that unbelievable athleticism. It’s inexcusable that a guy who had his size, strength and athleticism never averaged double digits in rebounds. Just shows you how much more he focused on the highlight-reel aspects of the game than the fundamentals. Hopefully Blake Griffin’s career won’t follow the same career trajectory of Stoudemire.

Amar’e, your style of play is the same as Carmelo’s….except he shoots 3′s and you shoot 16 footers. There is no benefit to having both in the lineup together.

  • MeloFan

I agree with you 100%, I was one of few that had a sense that the Carmelo/Amare blueprint was not going to work. As the hoop expert that you are, is there anyway the Knicks can get rid of STAT? Or is Melo stuck for 2 years?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

pretty much stuck. The issue with Stoudemire’s contract isn’t that it’s $45 million over the next two years…..ok, that’s part of the issue. But the main problem is that it isn’t insured. So even if he doesn’t play, the team that hold his contract has to personally pay him that money. Only a few teams in the league even have the ability to just pay out 22+ million dollars out of pocket to a guy who isn’t playing, and he’s already on one of them.
    .
In order for him to get traded, the Knicks would need some other team to trade them one or two equally awful contracts. Basically, even if they can trade Amar’e, it wouldn’t make them any better. Infact, it would probably put them in a worse position financially.
    .
Then again, Rashard Lewis, Gilbert Arenas, and Richard Jefferson were all traded recently. So, I can’t be certain.

John Salmons, Chuck Hayes, Travis Outlaw and Cole Aldrich for Amare and Pablo Prigioni. Gives Knicks another scoring punch off the bench and added defense down low. Amare would help the new Kings ownership group form a fresh image, with an Isaiah, Thornton, Tyreke, Amare, Cousins starting 5. With Prigioni, Thompson, James Johnson, and Jimmer off the bench.

  • Caboose

I’ve seen Blake’s game progress every year, I sincerely doubt he’ll end up like Stoudemire.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Pablo is going back to Spain. So take him and Aldrich off.
    .
    That trade works.
    .
I just really doubt the Kings new owners want to start out their reign with a $45 million dollar bench statue. That would be a crippling trade for the next 2 years.

  • jmm

Let’s talk about having you learn how to catch the bloody basketball, and perhaps use your left hand for something other than holding cutlery.

  • da_biz

What? He doesn’t like his role as “Perpetually Injured Rich B*stard?”

  • Caboose

Well the nice part is that it’s only 2 years. Meaning the new owners could get him, play/pay him a year, then either let him play out his final year or amnesty him away since the Kings still have theirs. I think that with the deep Silicon Valley pockets, they’d be ok both with taking a gamble on a solid veteran and showing Sacramento that they’re not afraid to spend money (like the Maloofs). Win-win.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you can’t amnesty a player you didn’t have before the lock out.
    .
that is a 31 year old, uninsured risk. it literally does nothing for your franchise to spend $45 million on a guy who in no way shape or form improves your situation going forward. there are much better bad contracts than Amar’e available every year.

Perhaps I’m overrating Amare then. I don’t expect 25-10 out of him, but the Kings would be ecstatic with an 18-8 player to put next to Cousins. Is 18-8 worth $20+mil a year? No, but he is a name, and believe me, Sacramento would love to have a “star” to latch onto. If Amare produces more in the 15-6 range as a starter, then stay away from him like the plague.

18 and 8 for what, 100 games…..max? my problem is that, there is a reason he isn’t insured. He is more likely to break down, then to remain healthy. Is that really worth the risk? And if he is healthy, you are now an 8 seed. You just fell out of the lottery, and are stuck with an out of his prime big man eating up 30% of the salary cap….

The Bobcats need to get on the phone with NY on this one. They have pretty bad contracts themselves and getting a player that sells tickets at least would help them for two years. Then they build up on the draft, hopefully keeping Kemba and MKG then fire-sale everyone else.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they don’t have anyone with a contract that bad. or multiple players with bad contracts the would work.

  • KingBenjamin

Crazy how in his first season
with the Knicks he was easily the best power forward in the NBA, but now
    he’s a constantly injured player with a huge contract that’s a 7th man
off the bench, what a complete 180 for his career.

  • Pedestrian Nightmare

    I, I, I…

  • shockexchange

If Amare wants to know his role, all he has to do is reach out to one of the groupies he no longer calls and get her perspective. The Shock Exchange bets she could empathize with him.

“I believe you are filling the role of financial albatross and never-ending legacy of Mike D’Antoni’s inability to manage minutes admirably. Keep up the good work,” said an unknown Knick official.

One of the few? The entire basketball world said it was a bad idea except for James Dolan. Lol

*little caveat to this, i don’t care about appeasing the fans. especially those fans who are just grateful to have a team. i’d rather just focus on the future.

  • Slimm

If Z-Bo and Marc can play together in Memphis, which they both shoot a mid-range game and post play, and Marc being a great big man passer, then there is no reason for Melo and Stat to not play together,Melo can score from anywhere, and Stat is a Mid-Range post player, scrap that old NY knick play book, and have Melo and Stat operate off opposite sides of the floor, I put this on Mike Woodson for not utilizing both to the fullest potential, of course Melo is your first option but he needs help in ball control, rebounds, and possessions if he’s shooting 3 pointers from beyond, you can’t play the outside and control the paint that’s not working for Melo,so that’s where Amare and Chandler come in at… Let them play a 2 man game together, and NY Knick will be better off instead of just running through Melo all the time, the NY Knicks now are basically The Denver Nuggets of old 2.0…

  • Cartel

I dnt see Amare as useless but him and Melo in the same line up doesn’t work UNLESS u have an outstanding point guard that distributes the ball properly. That’s what Chauncy did in his short time with the Knicks. He made plays for BOTH of them. STAT would still manage to get at least 15-18pts that way. They had 3 outstanding point guards. Problem is MELO is ALWAYS bringing up the ball like HE’S the point guard!! Doing that gets the whole team outta rhythm and kills pick and rolls that STAT, K-Mart, Chandler would benefit from. Bottomline, all they have to do is MOVE THE DAMN BALL!!!

  • LeroyShonuff

    Blame Mike D for that…

  • LeroyShonuff

Biggest difference is Gasol and Z-bo are PF and Center not PF and SF. Also neither Amare or Carmelo is the passer Gasol is or the Low Post force a healthy Z-Bo is. Neither of them play defense well and they have Chandler who is ineffective offensively unless its on pick and rolls. Basically the Knicks can never duplicate what Memphis has.

It’s those effing goggles, I’m telling ya!

  • Datkid

Blake has already averaged double digits in rebounds… and I suspect that stoudemire still has most of his athleticism still. it’s hard to get worn out if you literally don’t play for long stretches.

  • tbrgg

    And Joe Johnson

  • 416MeloMan

Amare honestly has no right to talk… He’s been injured during the playoffs every year since Melo has gotten there. How are they supposed to trust this guy if he can’t even stay on the floor. You can’t build like that

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

I’m sorry, what was that again?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The Bobcats don’t have a trade to make. Chicago is not taking back two of their former player’s. + Ben Gordon and Tyrus Thomas combined make more money than Carlos Boozer. There is absolutely ZERO chance Jerry Reinsdorf takes on more money. He has NEVER in all his years as an owner, paid ONE CENT to the luxury tax.

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

Dude, the Knicks. Not the Bulls.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol my bad. i was just talking about how the Bulls won’t trade Boozer to Charlotte with someone else.
    .
I may be wrong, I actually could see the Knicks making that trade IF they don’t find a way to retain JR Smith. Ben Gordon would be a usable replacement, and Tyrus Thomas won’t give you any less than Amar’e currently is.
    .
The question then becomes, would Charlotte be that willing to risk $45 million dollars? I doubt it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

I think they might, mainly because the intrigue that comes with Amare would make people watch the Bobcats again. Its also a good development move for Kemba, having a pick-and-roll big man next to him, which may be a good investment for Charlotte in the long run. MKG needs shooting and what better way to test your improved shooting(if theres any improvement) than to shoot open jumpers when Kemba penetrates or Amare attracts double teams(yes, he can still pull that off)? This would be a good move for both teams.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You are in a fairy tale land if you think Amar’e is just magically going to be Amar’e again. This isn’t NBK 2k man. If he could do all that, the Knicks wouldn’t trade him for that garbage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

He can still do that because he’ll be the main offensive option in Charlotte. He’s only 29 and he plays well from time to time. They wont win much but that doesnt mean that Amare wont be double teamed for at least ten games in a season being the number one option. I think its more of a long term move than actually looking for a star. Amare gives them a chance at marketability to some extent and a viable option on offense for their developing players to learn how to play off on. This isnt about them winning games, although they might surprise people with a few more. Its a two-year experiment that poses minimum risks.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

He turns 31 on November 16th.
    .
And you are still assuming even if he were healthy, that he would stay so. Or that he is actually worth that risk to Charlotte. Who already are losing money.
