Vinny Del Negro Fired By the LA Clippers

According to multiple published reports and Vinny Del Negro himself, the Los Angeles Clippers have let their head coach go. VDN amassed a 128-102 record in three seasons as the Clippers’ bench boss. Per Yahoo! Sports: “Despite considerable success and progress in his two seasons as coach, Del Negro was unable to withstand a first-round Western Conference loss to the Memphis Grizzlies and a free agent-to-be superstar, Chris Paul, who wanted a different coach, league sources said. Del Negro did not have a contract beyond this season. Del Negro was informed of the decision on Tuesday afternoon. Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins – who will be a free agent at season’s end – is a candidate for the job, league sources said. Another possible target, Stan Van Gundy, has said that he plans to sit out next season. Golden State assistant Mike Malone – who worked with Paul in New Orleans – could be a candidate too, sources said.”

I have never been a fan of Vinny and I felt that this should have been done last season but when was the last time a superstar PG led a team to the championship? You have to go all the way back to the Bad Boy Pistons in the late 80s.

  • LakeShow

Well don’t suck at coaching and maybe this won’t happen next time Vinny.

  • roscoe

    vdn did a great job…

lobberTown just did not get it done…

  • D_Nuggets

You could make a case for the Spurs in 2007… But then again that was a great team. And hopefully the Clips new coach will teach Griffin to play basketball. He’s overrated right now. Can’t be depended on to produce in the clutch or create his own shot.

  • KingBenjamin

He wasn’t fired, his contract expired and the Clippers didn’t want to reach a new contract agreement with him.

  • http://twitter.com/AdonKay Ado

who the hell expects Lionell Hollins to not have another contract set out for him once this one expires…. I mean with all the success especially recently he’s had with the Grizzlies

  • rubs93

    Byron Scott c’mon down….

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nah, you couldn’t really make that case. the finals doesn’t represent the entire season.

  • D_Nuggets

Parkers regular season and playoffs were pretty good also that year. But I guess you’re right, he didn’t carry his team all season like Zeke did.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

man Tim Duncan was far and away the best player on that team. It wasn’t even close. In the finals, Parker just got to play against a team who couldn’t hit a shot so they were constantly in bad defensive position, and they were also using Daniel Gibson to guard him. They didn’t really need Duncan.

  • davidR

just curious. out of the 5 positions, does PG have the least amount of bonafide superstars throughout the history of the game?

  • D_Nuggets

Maybe he was, but to me it was close. That’s no disrespect to Duncan, but in the finals (whether is was favorable match ups or just luck) Parkers number was called and he delivered.

    this ni66a

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Bro, Duncan led the team in
    - Points

    - Rebounds

    - Blocks

    - FG %
And was only getting 2.1 less Assists Per Game than Tony Parker the teams leader. and 0.1 assists behind Manu, who was in 2nd.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    moving on…

  • D_Nuggets

Yeah but Parker only scored 1.4 less ppg than Duncan and his fg % was only 2.6% worse, as a pg! I know Duncans numbers were objectively better. But don’t say it wasn’t even close.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Think about who the better defender was.
    It’s not even close.

  • D_Nuggets

I still think it was close :D but like I said in my first comment, that was just a great team. Ran through the playoffs and finals easily. Except for that Phoenix series.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah and look at the playoff numbers. Especially the advanced ones.

Tim Duncan had an Offensive Rating of 111

Tony Parker had an Offensive Rating of 103

Tim Duncan had a Defensive Rating of 98

Tony Parker had a Defensive Rating of 107

  • tomtom

So the Lakers disrespect P-Jax, he takes some time to finish his book, the Lakers loser-little brothers (until recently) suddenly get a vacancy and the perfect revenge plot is written. I fking hate it, but it seems fated..damn.

  • shockexchange

(Denny Green voice) “Clippers … They were who we knew they were!”

  • LobCity

How is Lionel a free agent? I mean who the hell would wait for his contract to expire rather than giving him an extension…..I mean with all the success he’s had with the Grizzlies….

Not saying he ends up in LA but I don’t think it’s smart to let him hit the free agent market with a billionaire owner in Brooklyn searching for a coach. Whether it was the new owner or Lionel’s decision, I don’t think bodes well for the Grizz that he hasn’t signed an extension.

  • LobCity

Great job? I wouldn’t go that far. I give him credit for managing such a deep roster, but that’s about it.

The clippers offense struggled last year so management upgraded the bench and brought back Chauncy but he still couldn’t get the job done. He failed to get the most out of key players like DeAndre and Bledsoe. Not saying DeAndre doesn’t have work to do but it would have been more beneficial to have DJ on the court during 20 point blowouts than sitting on the bench. He didn’t do himself any favors by getting outcoached in the playoffs 4 straight games.

The reality is when CP3 resigns there won’t be much flexibility to bring in new players so they need somebody else to get the job done with most of the same roster.

  • roscoe

under vdn LAC won a division title, right?

did they win the most games in there pathetic history?

how quickly u boastful sslobbercity fans forget vdn took u from the basement or abyss of the L to respect….

and now u RUN the guy out of town like a villain and cheer.

u just lost the greatest LAC coach ever BRO.

    my _________ head hurts.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

    Brian Shaw.

  • LobCity

Wow…..People really think that should be attributed to VDN? My ________ head hurts.

Do they not have an elite PG? Is he not the best player in Clippers history?

Do they not have a talented team with depth to withstand injuries throughout the regular season? Would you not consider it the most talented team in Clippers history?

So despite this you want to attribute the success to VDN? Laughable…Based on the “sslobcity” and “pathetic history” comment I sense a lil hate, which explains why you’d try to twist this into the ungrateful Clippers “running” off their savior. Give me a break. This wasn’t the Lakers canning Mike Brown after 5(?) games with 3 years left on his contract. VDN’s contract was done. They could have let him go last year but they picked up his option and brought him back. He knew the deal and he knew what was expected. Nobody did him wrong here. In fact his contract ran until late June but they let him know now, giving him time to interview for openings.

The Bulls let him go and went in a different direction and the team went from .500 to a contender with a healthy Rose. Same talent, different coach. Thibs even coached em into the 2nd round this yr w/o rose.

I appreciate his contributions and wish him luck. If he’s such a great coach I’m sure he’ll have plenty of success.

If this is the case, I have the feeling the Clippers might have just signed him to a one day contract just to fire him.

  • roscoe

vdn is the greatest coach in LAC history & just got RUN.

is cp3 the greatest point guard in LAC history?

    has cp3 won a chip?

    does your question really matter?

why is slob-city attempting to be classy?

how come LAC fans always bring up the LAL?

what does CHI have to do with the dysfunctional LAC?

when are LAC fans going to abandoned the titanic?

  • LobCity

    Huh? lol…..

My questions regarding the team/CP3 are relevant when discussing this season’s success because I credit CP3 and the current roster more than VDN. VDN was coaching LAC before CP3 arrived and they didn’t have this type of success. But I wouldn’t expect a troll to know that, I mean, it’s not like you ever followed the Clippers’ pathetic history.

    Attempting to be classy? huh?

As for bringing up LAL, I was simply providing an example of a team that really did “run” off a coach. I was simply contrasting the two situations to discredit your previous statement.

    Dysfunctional LAC? Based on what?

Chi was VDN previous team so it makes sense to see how they did since letting go of the “greatest coach in Clippers history” lol

LAC is bringing back it’s core, has the MLE, expiring contracts and a trade chip in Bledsoe……no sign of a sinking ship here. Keep hoping tho.

  • TR

I would say PG is and Center probably have the most bonafide stars over the history of the game, but you could easily debate that. Historically I’d say they were the 2 most important positions so you get the most stars.

  • danpowers

    finally!!! was about damn time

  • roscoe

Dysfunctional & LAC go together like pb&j. for real.

don’t take my objective view as though I am a LAC hater, bc that’s not it.
