76ers Unlikely to Hire Coach Before Draft

Sixers president and GM Sam Hinkie reportedly won’t hire a head coach until after the Draft, according to the Philly Inquirer. Hinkie is taking his time with the replacing Doug Collins and believes a coach is “secondary in the process”: “According to two sources with knowledge of the 76ers’ search for a coach, Sam Hinkie, president of basketball operations and general manager, probably won’t name a coach until after the June 27 draft. One Houston-based source said Hinkie ‘will probably find a coach after the draft.’ The source also said that Hinkie believes that the coach ‘is secondary in the process because [Hinkie] will have an idea of what type of players’ the Sixers will need to select. The Sixers have the 11th pick in the draft. The source also said Hinkie would probably not be interested in hiring recently fired Denver Nuggets coach George Karl. Karl, 62, one source said, is a great coach, but Hinkie ‘would probably be more interested in a younger coach’ who will grow with a relatively young team.”

If I were a coach I’d definitely want a say in who is drafted. I think some teams really miss that, they think they know how to build a good roster and that any respectable coach could win with it but they’re missing the point of a succesful partnership; you have to include a coach and his input into the process or else you’re just handcuffing him hurting the whole franchise in turn.
