Boston Celtics Trade Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to Brooklyn Nets

Woah! Kevin Garnett has reportedly agreed to waive his no-trade clause, clearing the final hurdle of a deal that’ll move him, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to Brooklyn. Take it away, Woj: “The Brooklyn Nets have reached an agreement in principle with the Boston Celtics to acquire future Hall of Famers  Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce after Garnett agreed to waive his no-trade clause, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Garnett waived his no-trade clause after the Nets agreed to fully guarantee the $12 million owed him for the 2014-15 season, the third year of his contract. The Nets could have bought out Garnett for $6 million. Garnett also was swayed by the chance to join his close friend, Pierce, in Brooklyn where they could play for longtime rival Jason Kidd. The trade can’t be made official by the NBA until July 10.”

we’re bailing the nets out of gerald wallace’s contract and kris humphries contract. what a fucking joke danny is.

  • icepick88

    Brooklyn Celtics!

  • Guest

hopefully they can beat the bulls now.

  • Fitzy

    Atlanklyn Celtics

    imagine if this is 2008

The Humphries contract is expiring. And you’re losing Terry’s contract. More importantly: next season is the right season to tank. And those draft picks won’t hurt.

  • Daniel Noel

    sad day in boston

  • Dagger

On an emotional level, I hate this trade. KG and Pierce were the epitome of Celtics basketball, and it would have been great if Pierce in particular would have retired in Boston.

On the other hand: the Nets improve, at least for a year or two. KG can still anchor a defense, and his jumper will space the floor for Lopez. Pierce is a huge upgrade at SF. Meanwhile the Celtics begin their rebuild just before a loaded draft. They need to figure out what to do with Rondo – I’d keep him – but the deal makes sense.

  • John Lennon

Add Dirk, Rondo and Noah to that team and you have LeBron’s past nightmares. They even have the Spurs’ colors!

  • speedy

Tatoo removal for the Jet please.

  • Roy Blumenfeld

How does Billy King still have a job? He trades away first round picks, hands out bad contracts, then trades them away to take on ever worse ones! The Nets have mortgaged their future and still are not even the second best team in the East.

  • Shifty

Omg, what are we trading them for? Dark days ahead for us Celtic fans………Rondo you better pull your f&@kig head in and prove you can play without the HOF’mers, green, become the next best Celtic. Glad we got rid of Terry. But man, end of a whole lot of happy memories…….

  • OfftheWall87

Have to wonder if Rondo is next. Next year’s draft is what teams who don’t have a young core or aren’t a championship contender are waiting for.

  • OfftheWall87

Will be weird seeing KG and Paul in another uniform, Paul more so than KG.

  • Roy Blumenfeld

Nah. It is pretty clear they are building around Rondo now.

  • Stainless

Two of the most loyal players to ever play the game…

  • Fitzy

really? we’re in the east dude, we might even make the playoffs for christs sake. we’re in no mans land right now. good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to tank.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

true, but it’s still very cool that KG and PP are still teammates. I would have preferred a trade to the Clipps so that they could still be with Doc Rivers… This is pretty great though imo.

  • B

Could care less about Terry and Garnett, but Pierce was loyal as hell, they’ll give the generic “it’s business”, but he was there for the worst of the worst and they just give up on him?

  • Evan Boland

I think this puts Brooklyn in position to win NOW. D-Will, Lopez, Pierce, Garnett, Terry and Joe Johnson? That’s A LOT of talent, albeit some old talent. I also have a strong feeling playing alongside Pierce and KG will bring the best out of D-Will and Brook.

  • Roy Blumenfeld

I’m not convinced. Pierce and KG are old and Brook is injury prone. I still don’t see them getting past Indiana or Miami.

  • roscoe

what if the Cessna gets left in BOS?

  • Marcus Sikvayugak

-.- until kg is no longer a net. i’m no longer a net fan. hopefully he leaves trash talk in boston.

  • hoodsnake

Boston stacking up on young bigs and absorbing expiring contracs to cash in on the ’14 draft? Smart. Obviously this is a long term win situation for them. I still think the nets are the 2nd best team in the city- their bench is skinnier and fell real hard like Nerlens Noel

  • Will Lee

they going for Andrew Wiggins son.

  • Will Lee

    Can Kidd be player-coach?

  • Mike Gilbert

All I know is I can’t wait to play as them in 2k14

  • Jerry Alex

Brook isn’t injury prone. one major injury and he’s out a year. Played 74 games this year. which besides the injury year is the least he’s played in a season. He played 82 games both years before. KG and pierce are old I agree but they’re vets. Prokorov has two years left in his 5 year championship guarantee. They’re going all in. Their future is screwed but the next two years should be good. Starting 5 consisting of 5 all stars, they are in my opinion by far the best in the East. on paper. They trying to win now. Gotta respect it.

  • Jerry Alex

second best in the east on paper*

  • Hart26

Boston did great in this trade, 3 picks, incredible. BK got Paul Pierce, who is broken. KG and PP will get injured, and now BK has no bench. So, when PP and KG get injured BK is screwed. A first year coach in Kidd will have issues coaching this much talent, don’t care how great his Basketball IQ is. Again, no depth, no perimeter defense, no speed, sorry, Brooklyn, still not a contender. Just my two cents.

  • s

Dude , this is not about talent, but experience and respect and trust these guys have in each other, JKidd now has a team of veterans, that are easy to coach

  • aндрій базилевич

they goin for my son that is andrew wiggins

  • aндрій базилевич

your right the raptors are the second best team

  • Mike Gilbert

    Pierce wanted out too

  • Mike Gilbert

Wizards are going to be significantly better than you, and the Cavs, Pistons, Raptors, and depending on what they do in the offseason, the Hawks and the Bucks…all these teams can feasebly be better than the Celtics next year…

  • Mike Gilbert

lol now that’s funny. Essentially you are saying that KG+Pierce+Terry>Rose+Deng+HInrich….lol

  • Mike Gilbert

    I don’t think that’s legal anymore

  • Mike Gilbert

you must be joking…this team can’t compete with Chicago or Pacers….not even close

  • Dominican Jordan

I wanna see how many people become Nets “fans” after this.

  • Caboose

    Uhh…
Deron = Rose (approx, given injury)
    Johnson > Hinrich
    Pierce = Deng
    Garnett = Boozer
    Lopez = Noah
Blatche, Evans, Brooks, Watson < Hamilton, Gibson, Butler, Teague

The Nets and Bulls will fight for 3rd in the increasingly top heavy East, if I had to guess.

  • Timshel

    Rondo just got really lonely…

  • bringbackthesonics

the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the players’ union prohibits the use of player-coaches, in order to avoid circumventing the league’s salary cap, as coaches’ salaries are not counted under the cap – wikipedia

  • Slick Ric

    For third? Lol

  • Noompsi

You do understand why they’re doing it? Right?? 2014 draft….

  • Noompsi

Did you know my frioend makes 79$ an hour… just ask me how!!! Kidding!!! Duh is all I can say as a Net fan… duh!

  • Noompsi

Who gives a ***. KG will outlast u

  • Noompsi

Crying yet fapping over this one… it’s bizarre to say the least.

  • danpowers

imo if rose returns something close to his old self these bulls are logged in as the 2nd seed in the east. the bulls are so much tougher than the nets. did you already forget how the bulls sick bay beat a more or less healthy nets team in this years playoffs?

the nets improved with that trade, but i guess the bulls improve that much more with rose’s return.

  • Noompsi

    ***too much*** okay… apologies

  • danpowers

when pierce actually leaves boston celtic fans must feel how we felt when ewing left the apple. my condolences guys.

  • Basketball Coach

rebuilding Celtics around Rondo is starting.

    http://basketballcoach.ca/

  • Fitzy

yeah and everyone thought the lakers were gonna come out the west this year.

  • OfftheWall87

That’s what every team that’s not a contender and doesn’t have a young core to build around is doing. It’s all about next year’s draft. I won’t be surprised if Rondo is the next to leave town.

  • OfftheWall87

No way KG would have waived his no trade clause if Paul wasn’t going with him.

  • OfftheWall87

Things get tougher for Miami. Lopez and KG will destroy them on the inside if they have to meet in the playoffs next season.

  • Lloyd

I still take a 85% DRose over DWill who isn’t exactly 100% either. But forget individual matchups. The Bulls are a defence-first minded cohesive team. The Nets have just been thrown together. The Bulls get the edge in this one, especially if Noah, Deng, and Rose come back healthy.

  • Lloyd

The Lakers were near the top in the West on paper during last offseason. Doesn’t mean anything.

  • Dula

Stop playing in Rookie Mode for once

  • ErnieD

Celtics get Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, Reggie Evans, and Keith Bogans PLUS 3 first round picks. Not sure is Humphries and his expiring contract will be around by mid-season. Guessing not, but I like his rebounding and strength. Henderson is only 31, which makes 3 years and 30 Mil a little easier to swallow. Will be stuck with him for two seasons at the most, coming off the bench to help the second string. Reggie Evans and Keith Bogans will also occupy the bench, as strong defenders, without much offensive game to speak of. Boston will be a lottery team for the 2014 draft.

  • Mike Gilbert

lol so if that Lakers team barely made the playoffs how the heck is your Celtics team going to make the playoffs?

  • Mike Gilbert

This isn’t a video game though. Don’t you remember the Bulls having the best record in the league two years in a row when Derrick Rose was healthy?

  • Mike Gilbert

but then how will I win…

  • Roy Blumenfeld

Brook just had another foot surgery related to his bone fracture. He is going to have to deal with that for the rest of his career. Yao Ming’s career ended over a similar thing. He is injury prone. The Nets aren’t going to have a lot of money to sign rotation players who they will need if they want to rest Pierce and KG to get maximum output from during the playoffs. Furthermore Deron, Joe Johnson, and Pierce all need the ball to be effective. I don’t see this as a big enough move to push Brooklyn to the finals.

  • ses

    Strongly Disagree,

    Deron Hinrich (agreed)
Pierce < Deng (Pierce is not the same player and older than Deng)
Garnett < Boozer (Offensively Boozer is better and was very consistent, Defensively Garnet is better but wasn't consistent)
    Lopez = Noah (agreed)
Blatche, Evans, Brooks, Watson < Hamilton, Gibson, Butler, Teague (agreed)

The Bulls WILL be at least 2nd seed pushing for 1st without doubt.

  • initbruv

Yeah because why would someone root for a team that brings in players that they like and want to see suceed? I’m a Jazz fan for life but I’ll be cheering for the Nets when they aren’t playing my team.

  • initbruv

Yeah because what we need is a league full of guys high fiving the other team and being polite on the court…Yuck.

  • Brad

this could be the 2nd worst week in Boston sports this year….Hernandez getting charged with murder, this whole thing with Doc KG PP, and then my Blackhawks winning the Cup…

  • riggs

who cares. waste of a comment.

  • bike

I REALLY want to hear from Paul Pierce on this. REALLY.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Is that draft really that good? I haven’t checked but I feel everyone is using the same narrative especially this Wiggins kid. I’m going to wait and see him play college ball first before I make assumptions of his potential in the NBA.

Happy for KG, has another legitimate shot at a ring….Hopefully.

    not even close lol seriously?

  • Mike Gilbert

their defense was awful last year…is a 38 year old supposed to fix that? lol

  • Fitzy

lakers won 45 in the west for 7 seed. celtics won 41. Weaker conference.

  • Mike Gilbert

the Celtics also are missing quite a large portion of their roster from last year…

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

how was their defense awful last year?

  • Mike Gilbert

    they ranked 23rd in opponent FG% and 21st in opponent 3PT %

That’s pretty bad for a playoff team. Did you not see a Nate Robinson led Bulls team that was missing Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich beat them in a playoff series?

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

    lol good stat
