Chandler Parsons Talks to Dwight Howard Every Day About Signing With Rockets

Can’t shame Chandler Parson for trying—the Rockets are one of a group of teams that would love to land Dwight Howard this summer. And Parsons certainly is doing everything in his power to make it happen. Via the Houston Chronicle: “Rockets players have a thread that allows them to share text messages as a group this offseason. Parsons, however, added a separate thought for Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard, the Rockets’ primary free-agent target. ‘After watching that last night,’ Parsons said, ‘I hit him with, ‘Come to Houston. That could be us.” That wasn’t anything new for Howard. He has heard plenty from Parsons this offseason. ‘I talk to Dwight every day,’ Parsons said. ‘I’ve created a relationship with him, where I feel like we’re very close. He hits me up about everything. I’ve covered pretty much every question he’s had. I basically tell him, ‘We have a chance to be really good without you next year. We’re going to have a good season. Why not come and join us, join our core guys who are for sure to be here and make us great, make us contend for a championship?’ That’s the main point I’ve gotten from talking to him. He wants to win. He wants to win rings. It’s obvious there is no better fit, no better team or opportunity to do that than with us.’”

can someone please explain the tampering rules

  • MUBWAR

players are exempt from it i guess

  • David Stern

If it makes me mad it’s tampering.

NBA Rule Book pg. 42, section iii.(a) .

  • Caboose

    Via CBA FAQ:

“Tampering is when a player or team directly or indirectly entices, induces or persuades anybody (player, general manager, etc.) who is under contract with another team in order to negotiate for their services. The NBA may impose suspensions and/or fines up to $50,000 if tampering is discovered.”

So Parsons is about to get hit with a nice fat fine.

  • spit hot fiyah

thanks. really smart move to go to the houston chronicle and tell america about it

  • Caboose

Lol he SHOULD get the full $50k for that, because that is pretty much the maximum in terms of tampering.

  • ScrewT

Stern has said before that players are allowed to talk to each other.

  • shockexchange

Agreed. Several players are prolly courting Rent-A-Center. There are a hundred scenarios that could come from giving the Houston Chronicle the details, and none of them are positive. Note to himself: “Never let Chandler Parsons know anything on the Shock Exchange.”

  • Redd

He’s going to LA..the other LA I think.

  • pposse

isnt Dwight a free agent? If he died tomorrow no NBA team would owe him money right? and if thats the case then is what Chandler Parsons doing considered tampering?

  • pposse

i seriously wonder if the players from the other generations talked to each other and tried to get FA’s to sign to their teams. This whole comraderie and players openly admitting to recruiting sounds so damn silly.

  • Caboose

That’s actually interesting, I’m honestly not sure when NBA contracts expire. Like, would Dwight’s contract be shorter than say, Tim Duncan’s? Is the expiration date contingent upon the last day of the Finals? I’d be curious to know.

  • shockexchange

Horry Jr and MWP are lobbying D12 to stay, and they are doing it publicly. It appears everybody is in that “gray area” between tampering and courting a free agent.

  • pposse

okay so apparently DH becomes a FA on July 1. So what Parson’s is doing should be considered tampering imo. But now i got another question, why are NBA contracts set up for the contracts to expire in July when the latest the season goes is in Mid June? Does DH get cut another check for not actually playing since April?

  • Caboose

My guess is, that the contracts are structured that long so that Draft day deals can still happen.

  • pposse

my thinking was that MWP and Kobe get a pass since they are all a part of the Lakers organization as of now.

  • pposse

okay yeah i think that makes sense. I dont know what kind of deal can be made for a guy that’s going to be a FA 3 days later; but on the other hand for example if DH already signed with Houston right after the finals then Houston can potentially package some players for a draft pick or trade away draft picks for players with already snagging DH. That can be viewed as potentially unfair i guess.

  • Caboose

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

  • Ugh

    June 30th.

  • Ugh

The relationship with tampering is between a player and a club, not a player and a player. Parsons can say what he likes to Howard, but he can’t lobby the Lakers to sign-and-trade Dwight to his team, for example, or send emails to Mitch Kupchak on behalf of Darrell Morey.

The other negative for tampering is the League can void the deal, which is the real threat.

what Manuel said I am blown away that a mother can make $5417 in a few weeks on the computer. have you seen this site link www.KEP2.com

  • The Mighty FV

Unless proven by phone records and emails….how can the NBA prove he isn’t just saying he’s speaking to him? that is how he’ll get out of the fine.

  • The Mighty FV

Their salary cap can’t bend that way. Not a chance he’ll go LAC.

  • The Mighty FV

hahahaha of course they did, do you think this is something new!? Welcome to sports man, it’s corrupt.

  • Redd

You’re right, not anymore simply because Lakers wouldn’t make that trade.

I just read on that, but it’s not the cap.

  • Bandwagonfan

    Bledsoe and griffin to lakers!

  • pposse

never has something like the big 3 in Miami been formed through free agency from what i remember back in the 80s and 90s. and then in response to that, we’ve been hearing all these rumors about DH and CP3 colluding to join together to combat that big 3 in Miami. It just got really ridiculous.

There are guys on the other fence, guys who stepped out and vocally said that they will have nothing to do with courting FA’s and whatnot.

This has all gotten a little out of hand, way too much publicity around it or its just simply out of hand

  • shockexchange

And the more the players try to create super teams, the more the owners devise clauses in the CBA to combat it. The owners created these monsters. With the continued expansion of the league they put more power in the hands of the players. They are trying to take that power back through the CBA.
