Chris Paul and Dwight Howard Reportedly Want to Be Teammates Next Season

The two biggest NBA free agents this summer want to play together, according to an ESPN report. Chris Paul and Dwight Howard have reportedly been discussing how to make it happen: “The Atlanta Hawks could make it happen. Atlanta, which is Howard’s hometown, has the cap room to sign both players to maximum-salaried contracts. Howard is not particularly fond of the idea of returning to Atlanta, but he would do so to team up with Paul, the sources said. But Paul, despite recently being upset with the Clippers over the perception that he got coach Vinny Del Negro fired, is unlikely to leave Los Angeles, one source said. He has gotten over his anger with the club and likes living in Los Angeles. ‘It would be very tough for him to go to Atlanta,’ the source said. ‘He loved Atlanta when they should have drafted him in ’05 but not so much since then. But hey, everybody is an option at this point.’ The preference for both players would be to play together for the Clippers, according to the sources. Because the Clippers don’t have enough cap room to sign Howard as a free agent, it would take a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers to make it happen. The Clippers would be open to working out a deal, but they fear the Lakers would never trade Howard to them, according to the sources. But while trading Howard to a team in their own building seems unthinkable, the Lakers are not likely to get a better trade package elsewhere than say, Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe. Sources say there was a faction of the Clippers organization that entertained the idea of trading Griffin for Howard when Howard wanted out of Orlando in 2012. But others within the franchise regarded Griffin as ‘untouchable’ and there were never any serious discussions with Orlando. Multiple sources insist Griffin remains untouchable. But realistically he would have to be included in any deal that brought Howard to the Clippers. Paul and Howard have been communicating via text messages. This is not the first time they’ve talked about teaming up together.”

so Dwight would play the 4???

  • Dwight’s Conscience

    Go to Houston.

  • KSupreme

NSA needs to read their texts and let LA know!

  • Bandwagonfan

Wait. If griffin and bledsoe went to lakers, WOW. Not only bledsoe can be an explosive pg with blake and nash rotation, lakers can actually make a double pg system with blake and nash, with enough back up! And griffin is so athletic that he wil provide a better inside threat as he can shoot mid range, post play ,etc. gasol will be on high post, as he can knock down elbow jumper, driving off the jab. And they will be a much much faster team with bled and griffin. Not to mention that kobe can rest more till hes recovered. I dont care about howard, but as a bandwagonfan, i know that if griffin and bledsoe are going to lakers, i will root for them. Man!

  • melvo

    Glad you admitted your fair-weatherness

  • RayJr

Would be great for the Lakers. They desperately have needed a decent PG since Fisher left and Bledsoe could fill that void. Griffin could play well alongside Pau. Lakers should do this and send that clown Howard to the Clips but I think he still goes to Houston.

  • Dev

This is a longshot to say the least

  • Bandwagonfan

My screen name is bandwagonfan for a reason.

  • Markymark

Been a clippers fan since before they got Chris Paul and I must say i’ve grown extremely tired of his off court antics. He’s an ingrate and at 28 only has only a couple of elite years ahead of him. Him and Howard really deserve each other

  • RedDragon10

lol whoever called him an angry midget was right on the mark

  • shockexchange

Whoever nicknamed Dwight “Rent-A-Center” was a genius.

  • Zabbah

Griffin should be untouchable. Once this kid’s got a jump shot, and there’s no reason for me not to think he won’t get a solid one after one more season, he will be regular season MVP.

  • russian guy

I just hope for Dwight that he can handle the pressure of being on a superteam.Ask Lebron what people will do and say if you fail.

  • Zabbah

He wasn’t one in Orlando? He didn’t take a team full of scrubs to the Finals? He wasn’t a superstar with the Lakers? I don’t like Dwight as a person but as a baller he’s top 5 right now.

  • Coors Cold Hard Facts

Carlos Mencia takes credit for creating the nickname

  • j

    he soft

  • shockexchange

Carlos Mencia is a plagiarist … as the theme from “Jeopardy” plays at infinitum …

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

Blake Griffin will never win the regular season MVP.

  • Zabbah

Lots of ppl said the same about Derrick Rose.

  • bike

All players who actually want to play with Dwight are idiots.
Chris Paul is a player who wants to play with Dwight.
Therefore, Chris Paul is an idiot.

  • LakeShow

Just get this all over quickly please.
We need to know who the team is before the season starts.

  • LakeShow

    lol, nice math.

  • Junkie

Did you even read what he said?

  • Junkie

Completely unrelated and Griffin also is not even the best player on his team, it would be like dwade being mvp over lebron

  • Drig

He was nowhere close to top 5 if the entire season was concerned. Post ASG, he was top 10 player and arguably the best C in the L. However, in the POs, he just fizzled out worse than what we expected from him.

If he wants to leave, fine. Give LAL Bledsoe and Griffin and a bench player. Move Pau to the C spot. Try to swing a trade for an SF with Artest / Jamison / Blake. Get Nash off the bench.

    Bledsoe/Nash
    Kobe/??
Artest/Jamison or two new SFs from the trade.
    Griffin/Hill
    Pau/??

Ain’t too bad for a run in the short term ( would need a LOT of luck ) but enough flexibility long term to make things work.

Would hate to see our post D though…….We’d probably get eaten alive at times……

  • MikeD

These two should just bang each other and get it over with already

  • smith, blocked, smith, stopped

he won’t win the finals mvp trophy either.

  • smith, blocked, smith, stopped

elgin baylor lost like, 8 times in a raw, then, gets injured, then the lakers win the tiele, and elgin becomes the clippers’ gm ? enough said.

  • smith, blocked, smith, stopped

dear chris, starks’ number isn’t retired. starbury’s neither. you’re welcome. best regards.

  • RonTeezy12

Hard to find a good place to live in ATL cept’ Buckhead

  • RonTeezy12

    lol your username haha

  • Alf

My problem with this is more on Chris Paul’s side….he basically wants a superteam like Lebron but forgetting that it takes a ‘big 3′ type of model. I get it, you wanna play for a serious contender. Tell me though, how much better would a CP/Howard duo be as compared to CP/David-West? CP/Griffin? If the trend continues, a CP/Howard duo takes to a 2nd-round playoff exit at best. The key to this would be if CP/Howard lands in Atlanta and they are able to keep Josh Smith and Al Hortford into the mix….then we have a real disucssion. Otherwise, might as well just resign with the Clips and hope Bledsoe or DJ really blow-up next year.

  • Zabbah

    Bro, do u even lift?

  • Junkie

Yeah i do actually haha. Do you even think?

  • OfftheWall87

Chris Paul wants a center who’s better than DeAndre Jordan. Can’t really call him an idiot.

  • OfftheWall87

Ingrate who changed how people see the Clippers organization in spite of Donald Sterling and Del Negro. Who’s really the ingrate here?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

All of you guys need to realize that the only team currently capable of doing this is Charlotte.

  • OfftheWall87

He needs more than a jumpshot. He needs to stop letting people push him around without retaliating.

  • OfftheWall87

Don’t see it happening. The Clippers will be getting a better coach regardless of who they choose from the group that’s out there. Chris would be silly to leave. Why try to build something in the Eastern Conference when he’s on a team currently that’s top 5 in the West? A West that doesn’t really have a team that’s considered decisively better than everyone else. If he went East, he’d face a conference that has an established order. Miami, Chicago with Rose back, Indiana and then everyone else. Dwight should go to Houston.

  • Zabbah

    Bro, don’t even go there.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

At the moment, This isn’t happening. As in, it’s not even possible.

  • LakeShow

    It’s possible. Just highly unlikely.
I can say with confidence it won’t happen, but it’s completely feasible.

  • Jsong

too bad Dwight not that much better than DeAndre haha

  • Junkie

I bet youre about as tough as Blake Griffin is lol

  • OfftheWall87

Foolish comment. Unless you think DeAndre’s in the conversation for best center in the league because Dwight averaged 17 and 12 this season with a bad back.

  • LakeShow

Both CP and DH are not go to scorers. Both can score. And both can do it very well at any given moment, but they are two things first before scorers. For CP, he is a point guard in the most traditional sense. For DH, he is a anchor defender in the most traditional sense. They still need a go to scorer with them for them to succeed. Unless they are on a defensive juggernaut of a team. Which is possible given their own talent from their positions defensively.

They really would need a 18-20ish ppg scorer for them to be elite is my point. And that is not very easy to get right now with the salary cap the way it is.

This can happen. I don’t think it will, and I don’t think it would be successful.

  • OfftheWall87

He’s not soft. Players who hustle the way he does aren’t soft. He just needs to play with more force.

  • LakeShow

    You BRO’S needa chill out.
Do some squats and breath deep.

  • spit hot fiyah

    2 things.

1, no way the lakers trade dwight to the clippers

2, no way the clippers give up griffin for him

  • roscoe

DeAndre takes offense to that comment.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s not possible. as in, there is not one team that has the cap room for 2 max free agents. Charlotte is the only team that can get there before free agency opens up.

  • roscoe

can the dwightmare really be starting again?

    enuf of this… enuf.

  • OfftheWall87

He and Chris alone wouldn’t be a super team. Any team that would sign them both wouldn’t have a lot of money left to sign any other pieces that would make it a super team. Plus, apparently Dwight wants to be the man on a team and he’s sensitive. Chris would be the man and he’d get to him in the same way he got to Blake this season. If he and Kobe didn’t go along all that great this season which seems to have been the case, then he and Chris wouldn’t get along much better. All that laughing and smiling wouldn’t work playing with Chris.

  • LakeShow

    With a trade it’s “possible.”

  • KB

If Dwight though playing with Kobe was hard, good luck with CP3. He’s just as ruthless as Kobe if not worse

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“with a trade” – yeah? and who is making this trade to help Chris Paul and Dwight Howard end up on the same team? The Lakers? The Clippers? Have you thought about this?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • OfftheWall87

Josh Smith, Dwight Howard and Al Horford…that’s a frontcourt without a reliable post scorer.

  • LakeShow

I don’t trust GM’s to not be stupid.
    It’s possible. Highly unlikely.

  • KingBenjamin

If the Lakers were to amnesty Gasol, would they be able to sign Dwight and CP3? Not to long term deals, but for example give them each a one year deal with the most money they can give them and wait until next season is over so they can give them long term contracts since Kobe’s contract expires after next season?

  • Max

CP3 with the lob to Dwight!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Did you read that link yet?

  • LakeShow

Yeah. I get it. It’s essentially impossible. Unless a GM is stupid.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s impossible unless Chris Paul and Dwight Howard collude with a team in order for them to give up all their assets. That’s the point.

  • playa

And Kobe Bryant after surgery wants to be fro-kobe who cant grow fro now.Chances are….slim.

  • pposse

    the good ole transitive property

  • LakeShow

    And that is… possible.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Let me repeat.
    .
“At the moment, This isn’t happening. As in, it’s not even possible.”

  • LakeShow

And let me repeat: This is the NBA. Stranger sh*t has happened.

  • LP @ThisisEther

Soft – involves letting people push you around without any retaliation.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

AT THE MOMENT. is that hard to see?

  • BugEyes

The hawks can do it but there won’t be able to resign josh smith

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no they can’t. if you click the link i posted to Lakeshow above, they will need to renounce EVERY PLAYER ON THE ROSTER except Al Horford before they can legally even talk to Dwight Howard and Chris Paul about contracts.

  • OfftheWall87

No. That’s more about him being a nice guy. Chauncey Billups made that point last week. Just because he’s a nice guy doesn’t mean he’s soft.

  • berkamore

Would make sense for Dwight on many levels. Young talent, emerging superstar in Harden, no state income taxes, life way cheaper than in Los Angeles. Plus, Dwight gets a coach who can actually teach him to play in the post. (Remember McHale was a monster down there) and if that isn’t enough Hakeem lives in the area.

Plus, expectations won’t be as high in Houston as Texas is mostly a football state.

But………..I am almost certain that Dwight will want to stay in LA. La La Land just has too many of the things that appeal to a guy like Howard. It will be interesting to see how the whole thing plays out.

  • Truth Serum

Just Trade Al NO DEFENSE Horford and the problem is solved. Trade Al (let somebody else play D) for future 1st round draft pick, that clears an additional 13million instantly.release any one else and Turnover Teague (another 6 million freed up(totaling 19m cleared )) then you have this to build with

    Howard
    Chis superstar Paul
    Jsmoove
    Ivan
    Zaza
    Kyle Korver
    Devin Harris,
    Kyle Korver
    Morrow
    Free agent
    Draft Picks

Just add a basket ball and this is a championship quality team with high grade players at every position and back up.

  • beewater

It would be the only time ever that DeAdre had taken offense to anything.

  • The Big Cheese

    Ad infinitum

  • JL

Then what is ESPN saying that the Hawks have the cap room to sign both to max contracts? Crappy reporting.

    Actually, they do.
    http://www.hoopsworld.com/atlanta-hawks-team-salary

Seems like it’s quite possible. And they would still have Teague, Lou Will, and Horford along with some scraps. Pretty shallow team, but these pieces except for CP3 can wait a couple years. Ivan Johnson and Stevenson are OK backups. Resign Korver for a reasonable price, and they have a decent bench too.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Because everyone pays attention to speculation like this. They make money out of others attention.

Howard and Paul to the Hornets(Charlotte) joining forces with Walker and Kidd-Gilchrist. Then in 2014 James becomes a free agent and the bobcats trade everyone except CP3 and Rent a Center. Then pray that Lebroke signs. Then Jordan prays that it works out and that he finally turned the Charlotte whatever you like to call them into a championship team.

  • asgf

didnt the article just state atlanta has the cap space for both?

  • tom

He stole that from South Park. He is the worst!!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This article implies that, yes. But that would only be true IF the team renounced every player on the roster outside of Al Horford…..(theoretically, without knowing if they would sign those two or not)

  • Zabbah

Bro, he started it. He’s not about this life.

  • grammar-bot

    *you’re

  • Kid-Canada

    In that case…

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

They cannot afford to resign josh smith, and howard, and paul…

  • John

Dwight howard has a sore vagina.. the clippers roster is championship quality already if they had a decent head coach they would be in the finals.
