Dwight Howard All Set to Meet With Rockets, Mavs, Hawks, Warriors and Lakers

Here we go again. Free agency officially kicks off at 12:01 a.m. EST tonight, and immediately the Dwight Howard suitors will begin their meetings, a proces that’ll be bookended by the Rockets (who are up tonight) and Lakers (Tuesday). Via Yahoo!: “After two years of careful planning and preparation to make themselves irresistible to Dwight Howard, the Houston Rockets have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the free agent center and will make a formal presentation to him on Sunday night in Los Angeles, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Lakers will make presentations between Sunday’s midnight ET start of free agency and Tuesday evening, sources told Y! Sports. Howard doesn’t want this process to extend long beyond his final meetings on Tuesday and could have a decision before the end of the week, sources said. … Howard has been leaning toward the Rockets in recent weeks and considers them the only team that would instantly allow him to play for a championship contender, sources said. The Lakers aren’t out of contention for Howard, but they are running second with the meetings starting Sunday in Los Angeles, sources told Y! Sports.”

His best bet would be Houston. Either way, if he doesn’t sign with the Lakers, he’ll need to do something spectacular wherever he signs to get people to respect him. After a while…you keep switching teams and you’re supposed to the best big man in basketball…it’s not them, it’s you.

i guessing mark cuban will be in attendance for this one. imagine how much more attractive dallas would be right now if d will was there

Apparently he’s not a fan of their up-tempo system, however. I read a couple days ago that the front-runner was Dallas, followed by Houston, although I imagine Howard’s sentiments keep changing. With that said: I agree that Houston would be by far the best choice available, and I do think Howard will ultimately go there. Hakeem and McHale will be tough to turn down.

  • Dwight Howard

I’m taking my attitude to Texas

Houston would be interesting. But him alongside Dirk, wow, what team in the NBA could defend that? 2 7 footers with totally different games who can get 20 a night, Dallas would be a top 5 seed in the west regardless of who else they get.

He won’t have that problem in Houston. If the 300 million+ basketball fans in China can embrace Starbury and Iverson after people in the States were spewing all types of venom at them… It’ll be a PR paradise for Dwight.

    If he signs with Houston:
-Rockets trade Jeremy Lin, Thomas Robinson and a 2014 2nd Rounder to the Suns for Goran Dragic and Channing Frye
-Rockets start: Dragic, Harden, Garcia, Parsons, Dwight with Asik, Douglas, Frye, and Smith off the bench

    If he signs with Dallas:
-Mavericks trade OJ Mayo, Shane Larkin, Jae Crowder Ricky Ledo, cash, a 2014 1st Rounder and a 2017 1st Rounder to the Celtics for Rajon Rondo and Courtney Lee
-Mavericks start: Rondo, Lee, Marion, Dirk, Dwight with a bunch of free agents off the bench

    If he signs with Atlanta:
-Hawks trade Al Horford and Louis Williams to the Blazers for LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews
-Hawks start: Teague, Matthews, Smith, Aldridge, and Dwight with Korver, Stephenson, Harris, and Johnson off the bench

If he signs with Golden State:
-Warriors trade Andrew Bogut and Jarrett Jack to the Thunder for Kevin Martin, Kendrick Perkins, and Reggie Jackson
-Warriors start: Curry, Thompson, Barnes, Lee, Dwight with Martin, Perkins, Rush, and Green off the bench

    If he signs with LA:
-Lakers trade Pau Gasol, Steve Blake, and Earl Clark for George Hill, Danny Granger, and Tyler Hansbrough
-Lakers start: Nash, Kobe, Granger, Hansbrough, Dwight with Metta, Hill(s), Duhon, and Meeks off the bench

When you look at all of these, I think him signing with the Warriors is the scariest.

I think the Warriors might be the dark horse in all of this. Like you said, they are flat-out SCARY with that line-up, and I think they might be ambitious enough to make a serious push for him.

I just hope and pray that they don’t risk the future of the team if he acts like a drama queen (again). I think GSW could be a really great fit for him, though.

  • OfftheWall87

OJ Mayo is an unrestricted free agent.

  • OfftheWall87

He would be fine in Houston. But everywhere else, he’s going to be known as the guy who didn’t want to play for the Lakers (one of the two greatest franchises in NBA history) and decided to change teams 3 times in 3 seasons while he was supposed to be the best big man in the game.

  • Caboose

Mavs are talking about signing him big so that they can move him. But yeah, that’s a BIG if in the Mavs’ plan. Like 75% of their team is liable to be gone by next year.

Just pick Houston already…They already have a solid young core with Harden in place. Dallas and LA are aging, and it doesn’t seem to be worth the risk of waiting for them to retool around him. Should be an easy choice.

  • The Fury

    Lol, this is classic.

???? Iverson does not play nor has he ever played professionally in China. What are you talking about?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

No, but anything AI-related still gets a lot of play in China and they welcome him every time he shows up for an international event. Trust me, even today he’s one of the most popular foreign athletes from over there.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

athletes over there… not “from over there”. Sorry.

pacers would never ever ever ever ever trade george hill and granger and hansborough for pau or blake or anyone.

plus most of the people you named in those trades are free agents (martin, Jack, Mayo, etc.)

  • ATL dynamite

Why trade away Horford? If Dwight comes, move Horford to the 4 (which is his natural position), then they will make a perfect combo.

  • Noompsi

True dude… IMO the first time Miami face some decent bigs… especially two of them… they f**ked!!!

  • Drig

I don’t care what Dwight does as long as he doesn’t drag this saga long. I already hate the fact that the Lakers’ organization is having to beg Dwight to stay. Even if he’s the best C in the L by far.

If Dwight leaves, let Kobe rest up for the entire 2013 season, trade Pau to a contender for solid role players, amnesty metta and force Nash to retire at the end of that season. Or trade him to a contender to help get him a ring. Dallas perhaps?

Then, start 2014 off by signing Kobe to a MLE level deal and go hard at FAs in 2014 and 2015.

If Dwight stays, try to make the big 4 thing work one more time. And then start over in 2014 by signing Kobe and trading Nash.

LAL is gonna be here regardless of what you do Dwight. Especially since they won’t like being the 2nd best team in town. Not for long anyways……….( If Dwight leaves, LAL is gonna be the 2nd best team in town…… )
