Dwight Howard Reportedly Unlikely to Re-Sign With the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are putting the full-court press on free agent center Dwight Howard – they’ve put up billboards letting the whole world know how much they want the big fella back, and teammates are saying all of the right and flowery things. But all of that may not be enough to convince Howard to return to Hollywood, according to ESPN: “There is very little chance of Dwight Howard re-signing with the Los Angeles Lakers this summer, according to sources close to the situation. Howard is willing to forgo the extra $30 million the Lakers can pay him to play for a coach and in a system he feels will better utilize his skill set, one source said. The Lakers can offer Howard a five-year, $118 million contract while other teams can pay him only $88 million over four years. Howard plans to meet with Dallas, Houston and Atlanta before meeting with the Lakers once teams are allowed to contact free agents beginning July 1, a source said. It appears that the teams will visit Howard in Los Angeles. […] Howard’s major problem with the Lakers is the system coach Mike D’Antoni employs. Beyond that, he did not enjoy playing with Kobe Bryant, though he could manage to do so in a different system, a source said. Howard also does not want to be second fiddle to Bryant for several more seasons. While many believe Houston is the Lakers’ stiffest competition, sources say Howard finds Dallas just as appealing, if not more. Assuming the Mavericks are able to clear enough cap space to offer him a maximum-salaried contract, Howard is strongly considering joining Dallas. The Mavericks are trying to shed Shawn Marion’s $9 million expiring contract to create the room to sign Howard, according to sources.”

He wants to play for Dallas!!!!? I understand playing alongside dirk but doesn’t Dwight need at least B- PG to be effective like he was in Orlando?

  • Shumpert

I think he would be a great fit for the Hawks if they can hold on to Teague, who is getting better at the point every year. (7+ assist this year) They have some excellent three-point shooters who can spread the floor in Korver and Lou Williams (and maybe Mayo). Put Horford next to him at PF and they can make some real noise in the East.

Aww son of a bleep blop…

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Well that problem might be solved if he’s somehow successful in dragging CP3 with him.

  • ZOGS

    I HATE THIS NlGGA

  • OfftheWall87

Lakers will be horrible next season without Dwight if they just have Nash, Gasol and some dudes before Kobe gets back. And even when that happens, chances are great he won’t be how he was this past season.

    The Indecision. Part 2.

  • cflip

He should pick Houston. Rockets would be better for the long term with their young core imo.

  • Mike Gilbert

assuming he doesn’t resign…do they blow it up and trade Pau and Nash?

  • Clos1881

Lakers brought this on themselves by hiring dantoni he has shown over his nba coaching career he can’t adjust his style to fit his team like say pat Riley show time lakers beat’em up Knicks you gotta fit your scheme around your talent it’s a reason Phil Jackson laughed when he was hired

  • Mike Gilbert

    and the strippers!

  • Dagger

Who will take them under the new CBA?

  • Mike Gilbert

IDK. Cleveland might be interested in trading for Pau. That’s all I can really think of off the top of my head

  • MikeC.

Cavs are under the cap and have several draft picks. If they want Pau, it can be done without too much painful thinking. I’m not sure about Nash’s salary, but flipping him for Marion’s expiring contract helps both teams in the short term and gets Nash out of a Lakers uni. He just looks weird in yellow.

  • RunNGun

To Houston! Make it happen, Morey!

  • MikeC.

They were pretty awful last season with all of those guys.

  • MikeC.

Even if it does happen, secretly Walsh made it happen.

  • Conor

Would LA have enough space (assuming a tax burden is inevitable) to sign Iguodala & Smith as a contingency?

  • bike

“according to sources close to the situation.”

And just exactly, who would that be? I keep picturing an ESPN reporter meeting with some dark, shrouded, figure wearing a hat and trench coat in a secluded parking garage at 3:00 am.

  • RayJr

…and still made the playoffs. This next season will be pretty awful with or without Dwight.

  • spit hot fiyah

we already went over this. he is the brother in law of “unnamed sources” and the first cousin of “sources with knowledge of the person’s thinking” and yes definitely hat and trench coat

  • spit hot fiyah

nash is pretty much untradable, with ujiri running the show i don’t even thin the raps will take him

  • Tony Taylor

    Jesse Jackson mode

  • playa

Problem is if joy&fun are this man priorities he could end up without any championships, fans&respect, playing for 4135452 teams throughout his “great” career. All hope is lost for those with weak mind.

  • Tony Taylor

Lakers might need to just bite the bullet( I know they won’t though) and try a sign and trade with either the clippers, the rockets or brooklyn because they can offer something valuable. Lopez, DeAndre/Blake, T-Rob/Asik. all these guys represent a chance to get younger AND better. and I believe Pau will play better with these guys too. and better suit D’Antoni’s style of play (except Jordan/Asik)

  • bike

And his code name is ‘Deep Sh*t’

  • LakeShow

    That would be awesome.

  • LakeShow

The played like 12-15 games total together.

  • LakeShow

    Then leave.
F*cking make your decision you tool. What’s so hard about being a man and making a choice.

  • Leo Sepkowitz

I love the idea of Howard in Houston/don’t think he works in LA, but I’ve been burned by Broussard rumors too many times to take them seriously anymore. We’ll see what happens.

  • underdog

That was kind of enough for me.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    MAKE IT HAPPEN MOREY.

  • K_HOLIDAY

I dont know if I’m built for another summer of basketball news being dominated by this dude!

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

    I feel your pain brother.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I think that would be enough to compensate for Howard’s departure.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I think regardless of the names you mentioned D’Antoni won’t be able to run a system where two bigs can flourish. You can take out Howard and insert those other bigs but it’d be the same result as long as Pau is in the lineup and D’Antoni is the coach. If anything I’d rather see us sign Josh Smith and move Pau to the center spot.

  • LakeShow

    What do you mean?

  • OfftheWall87

Didn’t take long to see Dwight didn’t like being the 3rd and sometimes 4th option.

  • bike

And publicly state your reasons in a professional manner. You owe LA that. I call bullsh*t on if you are saying LA’s system doesn’t fit your skill set. You just want that ego stroked 24/7 you selfish, narcissistic prima donna you.

How will he be no. 1 in Houston? James Harden is already there

  • OfftheWall87

He was first option in Orlando…not 3rd or 4th. They posted him and surrounded him with shooters.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nope. They are over the cap no matter what Howard does.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Can’t happen. Wouldn’t happen if it could. Doc Rivers ensures CP stays in LA. That was the whole reason they went back about getting him after it was “dead”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No money to sign anyone no matter what Howard does.

  • RayJr

Same here. What a waste of time Dwight has been.

  • Evan Boland

    Yup, so sad.

  • LakeShow

    Hmm.
    Really?
That’s weird cause I watched Hedo, Nelson, and Lewis all take more FGA than him…

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Think he was saying 12-15 games was enough for him to come to his conclusion that they don’t play well together.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Ahh makes since. Forgot our money situation.

  • Jerome

Dwight Howard confirms he is a class1 a$$hole.

  • Conor

    Hm…

Although the tax essentially ensures a triple-down on all surpluses, do you think LA would mind the cost of the aforementioned two, or use ’13-’14 as a bridge?

The Time Warner deal ensures 200m before any merchandising/box-office revenue is even accounted for… I hope they get as much as they can and use that as the foundation for luring players like James next summer. Cannot see that magnitude of disrespect being shown to Kobe, Gasol, and Nash by providing inferior teammates, even for a single season.

  • Conor

    * “cannot see what would otherwise be perceived as that magnitude…”

  • TSmoove

Not even sign and trade? or are the Lakers staying with their ‘we’re never signing and trading dwight’ thing?

  • LakeShow

    That’s stupid imo.

  • OfftheWall87

They were able to take those shots because the ball was first placed in Dwight’s hands in the post. First option for centers doesn’t always mean they take the most shots.

  • Jay Brodes

i would rather dump d12..get kg for 2 years and he and kb can try to win a title and go out together. i would be all for that to be honest. not sure if it can be done but would be good for lakeshow! i know mamba would ok this!

  • shutup

Remember when…..you said you wouldn’t mind the headache named Howard?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You can’t just sign players when you are over the cap. The luxury tax isn’t the issue for the Lakers. It’s the rules that are the problem.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Gotta get under $72 million in any sign and trade. Also have to do it with a team Dwight wants to play on….

  • LakeShow

    I’m still minding it.
I’m down for him to stay too. Just make a decision is my only request of him.

  • Guest

Dwight doesn`t owe the Lakers nor their fanbase anything lol. Stop being over dramatic. LA knew the risk they were taking when they traded for him. If Dwight signs else where, it shouldn`t catch anyone by surprise because (1) The Lakers are not contending for a title anytime in the near future (2) D`Antoni` offensive system doesn`t fit many traditional big men and (3) Not too many offensive-minded big men are itching to play with Bryant or continue playing with Bryant.

  • Conor

    i. We shall see.

ii. Er… Pau Gasol won two championships in a row and is the most offensively proficient big in the League…

  • Conor

So, if the Lakers are willing to reward other teams who elected not to surpass the tax threshold more lucratively than they would otherwise… the League would bar them from doing it? Why?

How can the NBA dictate what the Busses what to do with their money, on a free agency basis?

  • Conor

I mean, it isn’t like they’re going to make this mistake: http://www.thedraftreview.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=963

    What’s the harm?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

What are you talking about? Look up the collective bargaining agreement. bird rights. The Mid Level Exception. The rules have been in place so nba teams can’t just sign whoever they want for years. Many many years.

  • Lloyd

Has he led the Lakers to believe that he’d re-sign? If not, this is just him weighing options to see what his best fit would be. If the media didn’t keep reporting rumours, this guy would be liked a lot more.

  • Lloyd

He’s going to. Weighing your options before making a decision that dictates your career path for the next 4 years isn’t necessarily a bad thing…

  • Lloyd

Garnett’s old school. No way in hell he jumps ship to go to the Celtics’ rivals.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Trust me I thought the same.
