Kawhi Leonard Ready to Face LeBron James in the NBA Finals

Needless to say, this will be Kawhi Leonard’s most difficult cover in his young NBA career. The second-year San Antonio Spurs forward will have the unenviable task of slowing down LeBron James in the Finals, and Leonard says he’s up for the challenge. Per the AP: “The second-year pro was simply relaxing at home Monday night, watching Miami rout the Indiana Pacers 99-76 to set up a showdown with San Antonio in the NBA Finals. Seeing how Paul George and Lance Stephenson defended James wasn’t as important to Leonard as the outcome. ‘I was just laying [down], seeing who we were going to play,’ he said. Leonard means no disrespect. He is just happy to know who the Spurs will play after a week’s wait following their sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference finals. The 6-foot-7 Leonard will draw the primary defensive assignment against James, the reigning NBA Finals MVP and two-time league MVP who is averaging 26.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists in the playoffs. James is also shooting 51 percent overall and 39 percent on 3-pointers. ‘It’s just a great challenge for me to try to help my team win by playing good defense on him,’ Leonard said. ‘I just accept the challenge and am ready to play.’ [...] ‘He’s great on offense and defense,’ said Leonard, who has a 7-foot-3 wingspan. ‘He can pass, he can shoot the ball, gets offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds and he can guard the best player on the other team.’ While Leonard will be James’ primary defender, the Spurs will attempt to move him toward defensive help in the hope he gives up the ball. It’s a strategy that helped San Antonio limit opponents to 44.2 percent shooting, which was eighth in the league. But James isn’t the only player the Spurs know they will need a group mentality to defend, starting with All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.”

This is some straight up “sucker ____.” If the Spurs stop The Kang it will be a team effort. They will apply “The LeBron Rules” ( http://www.clicky.me/thelebronrules ) and force somebody else to score the ball. Then the Spurs will hit him with that “Lou Brock” and get The Kang’s head, bragging ’bout how Kawhi stopped him when it was really 5 Spurs + Popovich + the popcorn guy guarding The Kang.

  • Jay Cutler

    Ok.

  • K_HOLIDAY

    What?

  • spit hot fiyah

he will have the same problem as george. do alright on the perimeter but not have enough strength down low.

Am I the only one who is getting tired of the “Leonard trying to stop LBJ” convos? If anyone knows anything about the Spurs is that they play team defense effectively. Yes Leonard will see the bulk of the minutes guarding LBJ but he won’t be alone.

  • Mike Mihalow

    He’s bigger than George

  • MUBWAR

how so PG is 6’8 6’9 at 221 and Kawhi is 6’7 225

  • spit hot fiyah

maybe wingspan, which won’t help him in the post much. strength is needed. leonard and george don’t have a lot of that right now

I can’t believe you’re still going on about 3 paragraphs on a website that looks like it was hammered together with basic HTML in 1999. That’s the full extent of your revolutionary formula for stopping Lebron. Three paragraphs, containing three basic, outdated points that anyone with half a brain could have figured out 5 years ago. I almost respect your dogged persistence.

  • shockexchange

Of course those points are “outdated” and anyone with “half a brain could have figured out” … especially after the Shock Exchange wrote them down for you. You could say that after the Theory of Relativity after Einstein explained it.

  • Max

PG did as good a job as you can do against Lebron, he shot a lower percentage and had less assists than he usually does.

  • bike

Just once, I would like to hear some player when asked this question to respond with ‘I fully expect LeBron to hand me my ass on a silver platter. That is all’.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    PG is 6’10

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, you gotta just accept it. LOL, it is always going to get spun into one on one battles. ALWAYS.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Lol yea you’re right. I just wish ESPN would focus on the teams as a whole but ehh wishful thinking.

  • roger rogers

its aight shock, i know its all a big inside joke. Im laughing with you.

    idiot

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You realize you give credit for the rules to the Mavericks on your own website right? I mean, the blueprint for how to stop LeBron was actually outlined in 2007 by San Antonio. Before your website even existed. But even with that, you wrote on your website,
    .
” it appears the Dallas Mavericks have devised the following “Lebron Rules”, i.e. the blueprint for stopping Lebron James:”
    .
Why are you trying to take credit on this website, when you don’t even take credit on your own? I mean I get that you are a giant troll, trying to troll his way into people buying his book, but at least troll better. Change the description on your website, give yourself the credit that you think you deserve.

  • shockexchange

    You a “blocker.” D’Brickashaw!

  • Basketball Coach

but is he faster than PG? heck, just face it, no one can guard Lebron at one on one. he’s like a faster version of Webber.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

man, just read the lebron rules. you got info on everything.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

dont clown on the mans research.

  • shockexchange

That’s the same thing the Spurs are saying right now. LOL.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

haha you crazy man. lets hope this gets to a gm 7

  • spit hot fiyah

exactly, he did good on the perimeter but couldn’t handle him down low, they had to start doubling.

  • Max

That’s still one of the most ‘amazing’ things to happen in recent years IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, he was a 20 year old kid, growing 2 inches in a year. i don’t think it’s that crazy at all. especially if you figure he actually had time to sleep and relax stress free. The two biggest contributing factors to growth after genetics.

  • AndyK415

    Ha no he’s not!

  • Max

Sound like ganja is good for growth lol.
But I also misunderstood 2 inches for something more like 8cm instead of 5cm.
I haven’t read about more of the things happening tho.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it can be. usually ganja comes as a result of stress. which it just lessons the effects of.. doesn’t actually cure stress.

  • Max

And Damon Stoudemire also is an example it doesn’t equal growth..
Sigh, I tought I was up to something.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LMAO, maybe Damon was supposed to be a Hobbit? Don’t lose your dreams man. Clifford Robinson was tall, after all.

    Haha, So is Beasy.

“you really went on Yahoo and just believed it blindly?”

“He measured at 6’9″ with shoes on….before his draft.”

Soooooooooo…without the semantics(i.e. shoes on) yahoo is right, then.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Sure, if you believe Yahoo lists height by how tall a guy is barefoot….. .
Paul George has been listed at 6’9″ by Yahoo since he was drafted. He grew since then. It’s not hard to understand.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, you are just regurgitating the same thing.
    .
Here I’ll make it simple for you,
    .
Height data is filled in on every media website before a players rookie season. Then it is never changed again. Look at ESPN next, then CBS, well then go to draft express and look at his height with shoes before the draft.
    .
Then just take solace in knowing that the Internet does lie.

  • bill

Regurgitating the same thing? You asked if I just believed in yahoo’s record blindly…so, I showed you the same info on nba.com, and this site, that back yahoo up. That’s not regurgitating. That’s providing facts to back up a statement…

…to make it simple for you.

If the internet lies then your links are just as “worthless”.

  • bill

Sure, if you say it’s true, because you read it on a different site, then it must be…now I understand.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s regurgitating because you are just looking a listing and believing it. you don’t realize all those listings come from the same place?
.draft express has his height takin by humans at the draft combine, both with and without shoes. (it’s where the height on yahoo came from).
    .
his height with shoes, before the draft? 6’8.75″
    .
i didn’t say the internet lies for you to get defensive.
    .
i said it so you double check what you look at. Why would Yahoo/NBA/ESPN/WHEREVER need to change their height stats? How many people do you really think care, or even know where to look in order to fact check them?
    .
How often do I just make stuff up? Really?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I UNDERSTAND HOW THE PROCESS WORKS.
    .
That’s why I get it and you don’t.
    .
The other stuff is just proof.
    .
    Do you understand yet?
