Luol Deng Reportedly in Trade Talks Between Bulls and Wizards

There are rumblings that Chicago and Washington have had exploratory talks involving forward Luol Deng and the number 3 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Per ESPN: “The most likely trade construction, if talks were to progress to the serious stage, would send Deng to the Wizards for the No. 3 pick and center Emeka Okafor, who would have to formally opt into his contract for next season ($14.5 million) this week for the trade to go through. Yet it’s worth noting that Cleveland, sources say, has interest in Deng as well … and there will surely be other potential trade partners to surface if the Bulls decide they’re legitimately ready to part with Deng after years of flirting with the idea.”

seeing that WAS is in a position to contend for a title next year…

it makes sense to get rid of your #3 pick for a quality veteran…

wait… this article was talking about MJ and CHA, right?

  • Blakos

Horrible trade for Wizards. Both deng and Okafor on last season of contracts. Both paid around 14mil for this year. So in a years time it could simply be trading the 20th pick for the 3rd. Plus Deng has been overworked by Thibs over the last three years.

  • jmm

Don’t get this one personally. Washington seems like it’s in the middle of a youth movement – clearly Nene and Okafor aren’t getting them anywhere, so rebuilding through the draft and letting these big contracts expire seems like a more logical play than taking on a borderline All-Star who is nearly 30?

  • Blakos

Great trade for the Bulls tho. Butler to the 3. Another quality bench big in Okafor (More Rest for Noah). And the 3rd pick on McClemore to fill that SG void

  • Blakos

    Agree

  • OfftheWall87

The Bulls are set now with the squad they have to give Miami or Indiana a tough series. No need to trade anyone. Give this team at least one chance at it with Butler’s improvement.

  • K

NO!!!!!!!! I Am A Bulls fan leave the team the way it is for at least 1 more year! To see if u can win a title with a health full roster. If they lose next year then trade for Kevin Love and a shooting guard!! Then Hello NBA FINALS!!!

  • Stainless

Yeah, Jimmy Butler is stepping up though.

Down the road match-up…. Leonard vs Butler

Why are my Wizards doing this? Continue to build through the draft. Bennett or Porter please.

  • roscoe

    woah… “clearly Nene…” hold up…

Nene is not the problem. if healthy he will help this team win games+.

getting deng… isn’t the right move, for the NOW, but maybe it is, for the LATER.

    what do i know?

do you believe in santa too? where did you find your genie lamp?

I think this would be a solid move for Chicago, as long as they draft Oladipo.

  • Redd

Veteran presence, maybe also him being All Star twice in a row?

  • Redd

    Deng is expiring.

  • Tad

With the tighter luxury tax penalties next season, you really want to pay Okafor almost 15mil to come off the bench? I assume this deal means they’re seriously considering amnestying boozer and dumping Deng’s contracts for a young guy. First OKC, then Memphis now Chicago. New luxury tax penalties are really hurting good teams instead of helping bad teams.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    …not much

  • Blakos

Only one year to pay the tax. If this trade went through and Rose comes back at 90% of his former self they would have legit shot at title.

  • Tad

They’d only have to pay Deng for on year as well and he gives them a better shot of winning than Okafor does.

  • AndyK415

    Kevin isn’t getting traded

    Not happening

  • KB

This doesn’t sound good for either team

i would love to see deng leave the bulls just to see the bulls fans who cried about “rose has not enough help” (lol) realizing who he already had around him.

given how good the bulls operation acted during the past years i dont expect them to pull a move like that.

at least i dont see butler as an appropiate replacement for deng yet.

boozer is also better than most people give him credit for. i dont rlly get all the talk about amnestying him. that team is big and tough. they got boozer, noah and gibson in the front court, great wing defenders in butler and deng and a well rested rose next season. i guess when they touch that core of rose, deng, boozer and noah they risk to blow up the whole team concept.

  • OfftheWall87

Deng isn’t a creator. Just like the rest of them besides Rose. The help for Rose that people talked about was help creating offense. Deng, like the rest of the team, is a finisher. He can’t get anything by himself. The only other creator on that roster is Nate Robinson. When the playoffs arrive, it’s Rose trying to create everything which is why the Heat had him shooting a bad percentage and completely shut down with LeBron on him. If the Bulls want to win a championship, they’ll have to get a another guy who can help create offense or they’ll keep losing to Miami. They’ll get by everyone else with their defense and Rose’s brilliance on offense. But Miami has their number in the postseason.

  • danpowers

sure, a guy who is able to create his own shot and make plays for others would help any team. i am just convinced that the same bulls team that lost to the heat in the conference finals could also beat miami with a little more experience and maturity. another shot creator would be a nice extra but not really necessary imo.

  • grungy

But another year would mean another increase in salary, luxury tax and injuries. The Bulls need to have a move now and think about the future. Miami is the 2x defending champs dont you think they will retain their roster? Of course not, they will also adjust because they were nearly defeated by the Spurs and maybe by the Pacers. They will fill up their needs like a center or a pg. Miami is still the the team to beat and so the bulls must seriously think about that.

  • OfftheWall87

It is necessary. Rose has a better shot and is stronger than he was in 2011, but until he shows he can score with LeBron on him and be more efficient against the Heat, I still say they need another guy to help him. None of his teammates have gotten better with creating their own shot. Jimmy Butler will help, but not enough. The 2nd best passer on their team is their center for goodness sake.

  • danpowers

i was talking about their core. sure, they will have to resign robinson and nazr or find replacements. there are also some other assets that they could exchange and / or will have to replace.

  • danpowers

that speaks more for their center than it speaks against the rest of the supporting cast given how their offense is working. we’ll see what they do. i would just not be suprised if they kept their core and just change / add some roleplayers. if that group stays healthy they can beat any team, also in the playoffs (given that rose returns to his old self or something close to that).

  • OfftheWall87

It both speaks for Noah and against the rest of the squad. I doubt they can beat Miami in a 7 game series even with Rose at 100% (which he is according to Thibs) and Butler’s improvement. At best, they may make it a 6 or 7 game series. But the difference is still that Miami has 2 guys who can create for themselves and others. Chicago only has 1.

  • danpowers

sure, guys who can create offense do never hurt and are essential for winning on the big stage. but look at the roster, who do you want to give up for a great scorer without blowing up the defense. or who do you want to give up for whom? if you trade for a great scorer you might have to give up more than you get in return and the cap situation makes it almost impossible to add up for whatever gets lost in a trade for a big name. it seems likely that they would either have to give up depth or height for scoring. to me that seems as risky as trying another year with that squad.

there are teams every once in a while who dont have many shot creators and still win it all. i think the bulls could very well win a chip like the 2011 mavs or 2004 pistons.

sure, if the bulls keep their squad as it is there wont be a guarantee to win against another powerhouse like a healthy OKC or heat squad. but there is no guarantee to win against teams like that even if they have a second scorer.

  • OfftheWall87

They don’t need a great scorer. A good one will do. I thought they were out of their minds for signing Rip Hamilton two summers ago instead of going after a guy like Jamal Crawford or OJ Mayo when it was obvious they needed a young two guard. They waited until the last minute and signed Rip after he was let go from the Pistons. All they’re missing is a solid playmaker. Not even a star.

The 2011 Mavs best player was 7’0 and could get his shot off without any interference from Miami. D-Rose is just 6’2. That’s the difference. The 2004 Pistons had Rasheed who, like Dirk, could get a good shot off at any time in the post also.

  • roscoe

(chris farely voice) – “for the love of God”

  • Blakos

Disagree. Its not a straight Okafor/Deng Swap. The key part of the deal is the 3rd draft pick. Which could really upgrade Chicago at the 2 spot.

  • pposse

with the emergence of Butler the Heat as currently constructed can’t afford to have Lebron play d on Rose for any amount of time. A unit of Rose Butler Deng Boozer and Noah would cause way too much havoc. Lebron being the Heat’s second biggest player in all possible Heat lineups can’t cheat and guard Rose; they will get exposed if that happens. It would be a beautiful thing for the bulls if the heat think they can get away with that.

  • OfftheWall87

Butler hasn’t improved so much where Wade or even Battier can’t handle him. He, like the others, can’t do much off the dribble. LeBron guards Rose, Wade guards Butler, Battier guards Deng, Bosh guards Noah, Birdman guards Boozer. No problem. LeBron can still guard Rose in the 4th quarter and Chicago may do better with scoring, but not that much. Not enough to beat them in a series.

  • pposse

the only problem with that is out of all the lineups the Heat put out i never seen that one before. Birdman, Battier, Lebron, Wade, Bosh. I just don’t see that happening. Besides in money time (4th quarter) that is not the optimal lineup for the Heat. Ray ray needs to be out there with either Chalmers or Battier and no Birdman.

  • OfftheWall87

Birdman is their best big man defender. Spo isn’t stupid. If LeBron needs to guard Rose, Spo will put the best lineup he can put out there to make sure that Rose is contained. That lineup has to include Birdman. He could even put Ray out there instead of Battier, have Wade guard Deng and have Ray guard Butler and just let Butler do whatever he’s going to do instead of letting Rose go off. Rose can beat them without LeBron on him. Butler can’t regardless of who’s guarding him.

  • pposse

Butler is getting better and better by the day; by the end of the series with the Heat he was attacking the bucket and looking for his shot. He is the closest thing to creating a shot on the Bulls outside of Rose. He also averaged like 20 ppg. Ray Allen is horrid defensively. I’m calling it right now, if and when the Bulls Heat meet next year, Lebron guarding Rose will not only be a mistake bc 1. Rose will burn Lebron and 2. it will be a tactical mistake.

  • OfftheWall87

By the day? Are you watching him work out? You say you’re a die hard Bulls fan and everyone knows you dislike LeBron and the Heat, but face reality. Rose has to prove that he can score on LeBron in the 4th quarter. Until he does, the Heat have the Bulls number in the playoffs and they have Rose’s number more than any other team in the East.
