NBA Could Block Celtics’ Kevin Garnett/Doc Rivers Deal With Clippers

The League isn’t happy with the details in the megadeal being discussed by the LA Clippers and Boston Celtics. NBA Commissioner David Stern says coaches can’t be included in trade negotiations. Per the LA Times: “The NBA has cast doubt on the proposed trade between the Clippers and Boston Celtics because a coach cannot be traded for a player under the collective bargaining agreement, said a person familiar with the talks who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The deal that has been discussed and was close to being completed was Boston sending the rights to Coach Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to the Clippers for DeAndre Jordan and two first-round draft picks. The person said that even if the Clippers and Celtics break the trade into two transactions, the NBA would frown upon that because the Clippers are trying to get Rivers more than anything else. [...] Stern said that NBA rules prevent trades with ‘contingencies or side deals attached.’ … ‘I would say that if we know that what the parties really wanted to do is one and they’re going to break into two for purposes of trying to avoid the restrictions that the collective bargaining agreement places on it — we know how to deal with that as well,’ Stern said. The Clippers are trying to make tweaks to the deal, according to NBA executives. Stern said it was ‘correct’ to say his office said the deal wasn’t legitimate. ‘The teams – how shall I say this? – the teams know that,’ Stern said.”

unrelated to the article, but here is the Berkeley story for u: my friend went there in the early-mid 2000′s. and his friend went to a basketball game were Cal beat a very good team, ranked i’m guessing, since the students rushed the court after Cal won. My friend’s friend ran up to Leon Powe when rushing the court and hugged him Leon Powe responded by telling him: !What the f@ck you doin’ man?!”

    Hahahaha that’s an amazing story.

blah blah blah, Celtics can just pull off the deal, and say they want a coach that reflects the direction of their franchise, and give Rivers his walking papers. Wait like 3 weeks to make that part official.
    Stern averted.

Don’t block it, Stern. Make it happen, Walsh!

Basketball Reasons. I’m sure Chris Paul must really hate David Stern right now…

So if both teams have known about this detail all along… why would they still be trying to do it? Makes no sense. And besides… how much better a shot does LAC have to win than Boston? Didn’t they both get bounced out in the first round? Garnett and Rivers are better off staying in Boston and re-tooling with a healthy Rondo and Sulinger PLUS an improved Jeff Green, and emerging Fab Melo, and a more comfortable JET. I still see them competing for the Atlantic Division title against NY and Brooklyn. I just think he hates coaching Rondo.

Some people just don’t like strangers coming up and hugging them. Can’t blame the guy. LOL

  • smith, blocked, smith, stopped

so who’s who ? patrick is david ? the green ghost is kg, who’s spongebob squarepants ? and the question remains : who’s spongebob’s father ?

Except it makes sense to this time, u can’t trade coaches.

I love the Powe story. I expect the Clips/Celtics to work this out. Broken up into individual trades or whatever. It will happen.

  • Ugh

I think he’s probably trying to get away from Danny Ainge – Doc came up with the Ubuntu concept and Danny single-handedly destroyed it by trading and trying to trade three of the five key parts of the concept. What made that team great was destroyed by Ainge. Now take it to LA and it’ll work.

Except for the owner, of course…
