Paul George Thinks He Can Win the NBA MVP Award

Having pushed LeBron James and the Miami Heat to the brink in the Eastern Conference Finals, Paul George strongly agrees with teammate Roy Hibbert’s prediction: the future is very bright for George and the Indiana Pacers. George even seems to think he will someday replace LeBron as the NBA’s best player. Per Fox Sports: “Roy Hibbert, George’s teammate on the Indiana Pacers, said after a Game 6 Eastern Conference finals win Saturday over the Miami Heat that George could be holding the trophy next year. ‘He’s the future,’ Hibbert said. ‘He has a chance to be MVP of this league next year.’ George’s reaction to what Hibbert said? ‘Obviously, I agree with him,’ George said after Monday’s shootaround in preparation for the evening Game 7 against James’ Heat. ‘The more and more I get comfortable in this league and the more and more I find myself, I think I am capable of achieving that award.’ James has won the past two MVP trophies and four of the last five. Is George ready to slow James’ run next season? ‘Maybe not so quick as next year,’ said George, a third-year man who averaged 17.4 points during the regular season while being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. ‘But in my career, I wouldn’t be satisfied if I don’t win the award.’ George is optimistic about one day getting the trophy away from fellow small forward James. ‘He is the MVP,’ George said. ‘And as they say, to be the best you got to beat the best.’ [...] George is a confident guy. He’s hopeful of getting a maximum contract whenever he signs his next deal. ‘I would hope,’ George said. ‘I would hope. Max guys get the job done at this time (the playoffs).’ George, making $2.6 million this season and $3.3 million next season, could sign an maximum extension this summer with the Pacers that could start at around $14 million for 2014-15. But he stopped short of saying he wants to get his deal done this offseason.”

I think he can, but not at a small market like Indiana.

  • R32

Cant believe this dude is only making 3.2mil next year and 4.4mil the following.

You don’t think so? I feel even in such a small market he can accomplish this goal. If the Pacers are able to get the #1 seed in the East while George puts up consistant All-Star numbers I think he may have a legit chance.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

    Thank Danny Granger.

  • TR

    Well, nope, you cant Paul.

  • hushabomb

Doesn’t matter where ya play. A MVP is an MVP wherever he plays. Gonna be interesting when Granger comes back.

granger is out, they dont need him, he should be moved

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    george out grew granger.

  • jking-hoops

never say never but paul george has to do better with not turning the ball over so much.

  • Dagger

Yeah, no recent MVPs have ever come from small markets like Cleveland or San Antonio . . . .

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    it’s a rookie contract.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well he has a shot. if he can put up like 23PPG, 7RPG, 5APG, while Indiana finishes with the best record and the best defense, he’ll be in the top 3 of voting at worst.

  • Max

He’s got nothing to do with that.

  • Max

Sky is the limit for him.
If he gets better at taking care of the ball, and creating his own shot (going to the rim more also) I don’t see why not.

  • Mike Eppson

Lets Be Honest this should be Paul George’s team, I have never been a fan of Danny Granger he’s just another Joe Johnson he was on a bad team shooting alot of jumpers. Paul George brings so much more to the table as far as scoring defending and rebounding.
Trade Granger for peanuts to clear up cap space then give George a max deal, Sign Bledsoe and send money on a better bench.

  • Shifty

Don’t need Granger? They need a bench. Granger would be a asset coming off the bench.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

you really think he’ll settle coming off the bench?

    c/mon man!

  • Saleem Rainman

Two of the biggest markets in the L are LA and NY…when’s the last time an MVP was awarded to a player on either of those teams…?

  • BugEyes

He has a shot when bron bron and kd step oit

  • R32

    You don’t say…….

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

    Kobe 2008

  • K_HOLIDAY

Dont agree with him, but the last time I disagreed with a player making a claim like this, he won the MVP. His name is D-Rose. Anything can happen

  • justin

He can def do it at some point he’s a great player

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You are the one who can’t believe it.

  • spit hot fiyah

he already said he could and that it is george’s team now.

    c/mon man!

  • spit hot fiyah

exactly what came to my mind, and people were calling him out at the time too

  • Saleem Rainman

Exactly my point. How many years ago was that…?

  • Max

    Hahaha.

  • Max

    5!

  • Allan

I think he can but IMO the next in line as MVP would be KD

  • Youngindy21

Granger is a way better scorer/shooter than Paul George. The Pacers need him. Plus the Pacers are not gonna trade Granger while he injured because his market value wouldn’t be high. Paul George haven’t earned a max deal yet. He still got one more year to prove he worthy of a max deal.

  • Youngindy21

No he didn’t because Paul George still can’t score consistently.

  • shockexchange

The reality is that to win the MVP award you have to perform well during the regular season and in big moments. If you play on non-competitive teams then you never get the chance to shine in the playoffs. That said, Paul George wilted in Game 7 last night. He won’t be in the MVP conversation any time soon.

  • Youngindy21

Lebron won it in Cleveland. Steve Nash won it in Phoenix. Duncan won it in San Antonio. Market Size has nothing to do with it.

  • Saleem Rainman

I know ur kidding, but just in case others need me to spell it out lol….that means that its been 5 years since an MVP award was awarded to someone that played for one of the 2 biggest markets, being LA and NY.

  • Youngindy21

That was one game and he is a third year player. Like Lebron has never disappeared in big moments.

  • shockexchange

Actually, he didn’t do much the previous game either, though it was a blow out. The bottom line is that if The Kang or KD had performed like Paul George did last night, they would never hear the end of it. Paul George shrunk in the biggest game of his life – albeit it was only one game – which is a fact. Because of it, Paul George won’t be in the MVP conversation any time soon – that’s another fact.

  • K_HOLIDAY

Yep, so this time around I’m keeping my mouth closed

  • Datkid

lmaooo PG thinks he’s D.rose nah but KD’s next in line. and if da-white howard stops embarassing himself and returns to his orlando( or better) form he deserves one too. It’s gonna be dope when PG hand Bibbert gotta battle Rose and Noah to the death in the ECF again though.

  • Datkid

and for the record PG still has to beat out what, like 20 people? to even touch KD,the real #2 in the league.

  • Andy P

MVP voting is based on the regular season….not Game 7 of the conference Finals…

  • Mike Eppson

Paul George locked JR Smith and made Life hard for Carmelo. While leading the team in scoring, Then went to the conf finals put on a show and pushed them to 7 games and he’s not worthy of a max deal?

  • shockexchange

Andy P, the Shock Exchange is in total agreement. That’s why it took Jordan so long to win one.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni D dot Sanchez

    you believe that media talk?!

ni66as dont keep it real under those lights,

    c’mon man!

  • 23

DRose won the MVP in a year that it really should’ve been LeBrons tho. Not saying Rose wasn’t deserving, but I don’t think anybody is not deserving than LeBron. But that’s just my opinion

  • skeetskeet

    Lmao

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

    The Dagger…….ftw (Marv Albert voice)

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Yeah as a true supporterof Lebron I can say he disappointed and disappeared in his fair share of BIG games and it seemed worse the years that he snagged that MVP trophy except for last year of course oh and soon to be this year as well.

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Dwight will most likely never win an MVP award unless he breaks the 23ppg thresh hold while also snaging 11rbs or better the rebounds and blocks are a given but if he could not drop 23-25 a game back in Orlando then when he goes to Houston he most likely wont get those shot attempts either.

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Yeah but one thing I doubt is that team getting the best record and…if they do Kd could still gwt 1st/2nd in the west depending on where Howard goes. The Heat will be no lower than number 2 if that (and I stress the hell out of “if”) Durant is bound to drop at least 28ppg 8rbs 4-6 assist depending on where westbrook is at health wise. Lebron will do the usuall 27-30ppg depending on Wades health along with at least slightly over 8 rbs and 7assists while shooting comfortably above 53% and what will help him is improving to 80+% on free throws so I think PG needs to score more or shoot a better percentage. And I did not even mention what Harden will do with better team chemistry and help and CP3 usually kerps a top 5 spot on lock but I believe PG can squeeze in the top 5 or 3 though for sure.

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

I also forgot about a freaky season from Rose or Irving, John Wall, Curry too. But I woould like Bron, KD, and George to do so well that they have to be on the ALL NBA first team I know it is silly but imagine that line up with Lebron as the one on offense and and 3 on defense while KD and PG manned the wing LAWD. Then Dwight at center and Josh Smith at the 4.

  • Mike From Spain

    After Bron and KD retire

  • King David

i think u can 2 but not with the way NBA slobber Lebrick -_-

  • King David

    PREACH !!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike From Spain

Bron as PG, Paul George as SG, KD as SF… how long is that team?

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Lol idk but it would be fun to watch.
