Team USA Invites Kyrie Irving, Tyler Zeller and Dion Waiters to Minicamp

According to the Plain Dealer, a trio of Cleveland Cavaliers — point guard and current SLAM cover subject Kyrie Irving, shooting guard Dion Waiters and big man Tyler Zeller — have been invited to take part in a mini camp this summer by Team USA. (DeMarcus Cousins also got an invite): All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving and Cavaliers teammates Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller have been invited to take part in the USA men’s national team mini-camp in Las Vegas from July 22-25, sources said. Tristan Thompson will take part in the Canadian equivalent. According to USA Basketball’s chief media/communications officer Craig Miller, this year’s camp is primarily held to identify and evaluate some younger players who could eventually be added to the 2014-16 national team roster from which the 2014 USA World Basketball Cup Team (formerly known as FIBA World Championship) and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team will be chosen. The 2014-16 USA national team roster will include veteran players who were members of the national team program in 2010-12; any older players who have emerged; and younger players selected from the 2013 mini-camp, Miller said.”

Resident ‎Christian Laettner of the group.

  • K_HOLIDAY

Is Tyler Zeller going to carry Kyrie’s bags?

  • Max

    Hahaha.

  • GMR

He’s a hell of a player, and one of the better legit young 7 footers in the the league. He’s better today than Anthony Davis or Nerlens Noel will ever be. AD played (or practiced with) the Olympic team, so it’s not that crazy of an idea. Plus, he destroyed Coack Kay’s big men for 4 years, so I’m sure he knows a lot more about basketball and Zeller’s ability than you do.

  • Dfrance

Laettner was at least the best college in the country at the time. lol

  • bike

A disposable 7′ white guy who serves as a big punching bag for DeMarcus maybe?

  • co811809

You really think hes better now than AD or Nerlens will ever be? Are you insane? I’m a Duke and a Cavs fan and you’re out of your gourd

  • Max

And I’m pretty sure you’re trolling or I know way more than you.
Better than AD and Nerlens will ever be? lol, AD is allready way better.
8 pts and 6 rebounds whoooaahh!!

As an extremely biased UNC fan, Zeller has the skill-set combination of Lebron, Hakeem, Chamberlain and Shaq. Times three. Best player ever.

    Yes. Just… Yes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

Lol…and somehow they picked Tyler Zeller over the Immortal Luke Walton? I thought he always barely makes teams he should never be on.

  • Max

    Luke Walton is the man!
He’s Jason Kidd lite lite lite lite lite lite lite at the SF.

  • Max

    Wait, Monroe isn’t there yet?
For team USA I’d pick him over DCuz, you don’t have to worry he’ll so something stupid and he’s a very good passer.

  • Willy Lump Lump

Hmmm. Nice way of putting that. Think hard about what you just said and how it would be perceived if it were the other way around.

  • Cam

I don’t know why SLAM is so late on this story, but this broke weeks ago, and Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond got invites: http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2013/5/24/4362382/kyrie-irving-team-usa-basketball-john-wall-mini-camp

  • Max

Pistons Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond are expected to receive consideration.
