Tony Parker Thinks Manu Ginobili’s Breakout Game Is Coming

Manu Ginobili has been flat-out bad during the NBA Finals, scoring a total of 17 points and shooting 34.4 percent from the field. But Tony Parker says it’s only a matter of time before Ginobili has a big game. From the San Antonio Express-News: “Tony Parker and Tim Duncan spoke after Game 4 about trying to boost Ginobili’s confidence. Duncan said Ginobili needs to be more aggressive, and he’s got a point. As bad as Reckless Manu can be, Passive Manu might be the worst Manu of all. For Parker, it’s only a matter of time before the Argentine gets back on track. ‘I’ve been playing with him for a long time,” he said. “I just know he’s going to have a big game soon.’ Indeed, for all his postseason struggles, Ginobili has had at least one big outing in every series so far. But Popovich conceded that it’s less a matter of inducing a turnaround through tactical means than Ginobili doing it on his own. ‘He’s having a tough playoffs,’ Popovich said during a conference call on Friday. ‘He hasn’t really found a rhythm or found his game yet. He’s obviously not as confident as usual. He knows full well he hasn’t performed the way he’d like and the way he’s used to. But it’s simplistic to say, ‘What are we going to do to get him going?’ He’s either going to do it or he won’t.’”

    i wouldn’t bet on it

  • Lloyd

He’s due…now he just needs to take it. It’s not like the Heat are doing anything special to him on defence since he’s irrelevant to them right now. It’s all mental at this point.

  • LeroyShonuff

He continues to suck… He’s old with no burst. Once the burst left, he didn’t add portions to his game like a Kobe. He’s done. Spurs better stick with Green and Neal.

  • Sean Superstar Juan

The craftiness is still there but the explosion is gone, forever. He’s going to have to adjust to the aging, spot up shooter role to remain on the floor in the NBA.

  • BugEyes

If dude can score 12 with a couple of assist and keep spurs in it I think he can make a clutch bucket or two like he did to g.s

  • Junkie

problem is his jumper aint fallin

  • Sean Superstar Juan

I mean for next season. He is going to continue to struggle in this series.

  • Sean Superstar Juan

Yep, he has to adjust his game now.

In terms of an “all-time” international 5, do either of these two have a chance? Ginobili isn’t getting in at the 2 over Petrovic in my opinion, but you could make an argument for Parker over Nash.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    What’s your list?

  • LLC#12

Not sure at all, it’s an interesting team to ponder.

C: Sabonis perhaps, or Yao. Maybe even Dikembe
    PF: Dirk, Pau or Schrempf
    SF: Stojakovic?
SG: Petrovic, pretty much the only choice I’m sure about!
    PG: Currently, Nash

What do you think? As an aside, in 10 years time, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wiggins and maybe even Rubio on that list.

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

I would play Dirk at the 3 spot over Stojakovic have Pau at the 4 and IDC what people say Hakeem would be my five man. And I would have Tony as my point because he is a better defender but Nash is coming on for him as a sub and I would run them both in a small line up. I would have manu as the anchor of my second unit and petrovic would be my starter.

    Where’s Hakeem?????

  • The Fury

Good list (you forgot Olajuwon though). But for me, Manu is wayyy better that Drazen in terms of all everything about basketball. He isn’t as skilled as Manu, he’s just a better shooter and that’s all. But that’s just my opinion.

  • danpowers

    C: olajuwon, hands down.

    F: p gasol

F: nowitzki (you even think about having schrempf over nowitzki? oh my….)

G: ginobili (no disrespect to petrovic. he was a better scorer / shooter than ginobili, but ginobili is / was a better all around player http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=1&p1=petrodr01&y1=1993&p2=ginobma01&y2=2013 at least the numbers imply that)

G: parker (i wouldnt take nash here as i think that defense is also an important part of the game, but thats just a matter of taste given how nash is / was able to get a whole offense running)

I didn’t consider Hakeem cause he played for the US internationally, obviously if I had considered him, he would be my C hands down! Good point about Manu, you’re probably right about Drazen only being a better shooter.

  • LLC#12

I didn’t consider him cause he played for the US, but yeah, he’s easily the greatest C of all time.

  • LLC#12

Schrempf was perhaps a more versatile player than Dirk is, but I can understand your disagreement there, Schrempf can settle for being the 3rd PF after Dirk and Pau. Yeah, I wonder how much higher up the all-time rankings Nash would be if his d was half as good as other elite PG’s. A few guys have said Manu over Drazen so I was probably wrong on that one

  • danpowers

schrempf was a versatile role player with all start potential. nowitzki is a superstar hall of fame type of guy. thats the difference.
about petrovic and ginobili. i think thats a matter of taste, do you value all around skills more or pure scoring ability? its also hard to tell who the better player was / is because unfortunately petrovic’s career was cut too short and ginobili chose a smaller role for the sake of success.

  • Deshawn

Dirk is not a hall of fame “type” guy. He only secured and justified his selection to the HOF with winning the championship but regardless of winning, would have made it anyways. We are talking about a player that could be included in the talk of the league´s all-time top 30 players….Schrempf…smh, really….

  • danpowers

    please excuse that understatement

  • Jay Brodes

lets hope TP is right or this series is over!

  • Caboose

Well let’s stop doubting Tony now, shall we?

  • http://www.dzfoot.com/ Matt Harpring’s Haircut

.. and there it was! Tony called it

  • Caboose

    PG: Tony Parker
    SG: Manu Ginobili
    SF: Dirk Nowitzki
    PF: Pau Gasol
    C: Hakeem Olajuwon

  • Sean Superstar Juan

I was obviously wrong, to say the least.

  • Max

    All hail Tony the prophet!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/myselfunderkarma Fredd.

Prediction accomplished, i like it !

  • danpowers

yup, thats the team i posted. lets be honest tho. most wouldve instantly put nash as the pg if the spurs wouldnt be playing in the finals right now

  • Roger Rogers

    Tony Parker called it…

  • Caboose

    Greatest INTERNATIONAL C, right?

  • Caboose

Haha yeah, most would. Tony’s defense may not be stellar, but his is light years away from Nash and his two undeserved MVP’s.

  • danpowers

“Nash and his two undeserved MVP’s.”

thank you so much. always nice to see that one is not alone with this opinion

  • LLC#12

Yeah, that’s what I meant. I could imagine people making arguments for him being the greatest C of all time, but I don’t know if I’d go that far

  • Saleem Rainman

Parker is far from a good defencer tho, and has never been one. so to say u put him on over Nash only because he’s a “better defender” is faulty reasoning, at best.

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Yeah I reviewed that info and I concede that you are right and I decided to put him on my second unit.
