Andrew Bynum Signs With the Cleveland Cavaliers

by Marcel Mutoni / @ marcel_mutoni

All along, the Cleveland Cavaliers were ready to take a calculated risk with free agent center Andrew Bynum. The 25 year-old is now prepared to join the Cavs, having agreed to a two-year deal.

Following a catastrophic season in Philadelphia after being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers for Dwight Howard — Bynum didn’t play in a single game for the Sixers who acquired him in a four-team blockbuster — the big fella hopes to give his basketball career a badly-needed boost in Cleveland.

The Cavs are only guaranteeing $6 million and one season to their new center, but if he meets certain performance incentives, the contract could reach just over $24 million and two years (Cleveland holds an option for the 2014-’15 campaign worth $12.5 million.)

Per the Plain Dealer:

A little more than a week ago, Andrew Bynum answered the phone without knowing the call would alter his future. But after the 7-foot center with suspect knees talked to Cavaliers coach Mike Brown — the same coach who guided Bynum to his best season in the NBA — he was ready to not only listen to any free-agent offers from Cleveland, but also place the Cavaliers among the leading contenders for his services. [...] “Whatever Mike said, Andrew got off the phone and was actually excited to take the meeting,” said David Lee, Bynum’s agent, Wednesday evening. “I kid Mike that he should go into motivational speaking, but Andrew was extremely motivated and extremely excited.”

Questions still remain about Bynum’s knees — “It’s not a slam dunk,” one league executive said — and even moreso about his heart, according to a league source. Bynum missed his only season in Philadelphia because of what first was a bone bruise, and later was a knee injury suffered while bowling. Since undergoing surgery on his knees in March, Bynum has gained about 15 pounds, Lee said. Lee said he expects Bynum to be ready to play by the start of training camp — even though he wouldn’t permit his client to work out for teams. “Actually, there was no reason to have him work out,” Lee said. “His skill level’s not in question, so there’s no reason to work out. The reality is he has not picked up the ball in some time and he has to get his weight down. He’s got to lose probably about 15 pounds, which is not a big deal. But to get on the floor you’ve got to reduce your weight, otherwise you risk injury.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers are gambling on Andrew Bynum’s knees staying healthy and him playing well enough to entice LeBron James when he becomes a free agent next summer.

Star point guard Kyrie Irving seems excited about the prospect of playing with Bynum, and despite their rocky past, Mike Brown is getting another shot to coach a player who posted career-best numbers (18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds in 2011-’12) under his tutelage.

I wonder with this signing does it still leave the Cavs room for Lebron next off season?

  • LLC#12

Do you think LeBron returning is that much of a possibility? A lot of people say so but I don’t really see it, especially if they win another championship next year. Their core is getting old, but contenders will always be able to attract strong players to replace them

  • Max

If he can give them 50 games it’s worth it.

  • OfftheWall87

Highly doubt LeBron will be going back to Cleveland. Would be weird for him to play without a max contract for his entire career. Cleveland couldn’t pay him, Kyrie and Bennett what they would all deserve. But if it were somehow possible, they’d be pretty tough to beat with all those guys. Much better than the garbage he dragged around from ’03-’10. It’s more plausible that D-Wade ends up retiring or staying in Miami for less money and Riley builds around LeBron.

  • LLC#12

If healthy, I quite like this Cavs team going forward. Varejao is a good player to put next to Bynum as he won’t demand touches and will happily let Bynum be the #1 option down low. It’s a very clever contract offer by Cleveland too, low risk.

  • RunNGunr

This is a guy I want on my bowling team.

  • pposse

i predict Varejao’s will be the one injuring Bynum this time around. He’s going to fly in for a rebound and fall on his face and roll under Bynums legs injuring Bynum. AB will walk away with his 6 million and Varejao will walk away in shame.

  • Dfrance

I really don’t see him going back there next off season. I see a return to Cle as an end of career type move, but not while he’s still in his prime.

  • LLC#12

Ha, the image of a heap of damaged knees and curly hair made me chuckle. Though at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if a strong wind injured Bynum, nevermind 250 pounds of flying hair.

  • Lloyd

The Cavs shouldn’t worry about making room for Lebron. Lebron won’t be making any room for them.

  • Lloyd

I find it amazing that Bynum’s agent is Warriors’ big man David Lee. I had no idea.

  • Roy Blumenfeld

Because David Lee of the Golden State Warriors is the only person in America with those extremely common first and last names combined…

  • Lloyd

    Yea, probably. Thanks.

  • RayJr

Over/under on 41 games played?…I’m going to Vegas next month so hopefully a casino will have this so I can put some money on the under.

  • Conor

All of his injuries have been freak incidents. So undeserving, smh

  • bike

Low risk/low reward. Probably last contract for the guy anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

What are the chances Lebron ACTUALLY leaves Miami?

  • Anthony

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

    hope he plays

  • pposse

i don’t know about his injuries..i just want to be his friend. Blowing trees so stanky the neighbors complain about the smell outside, blasting music so loud the neighbors call the police, playing video games, going to the playboy mansion while your out injured shiiiiiiet he don’t want to grow up he’s a toy r us kid!

  • spit hot fiyah

true as far as low risk, but possibly high reward. if he doesn’t play they still spent the same as the bucks spent on pachulia

  • danpowers

very professional to gain 15 pounds after knee surgery -.-
still a nice move by the cavs

  • The Seed

Good move, Cavs will be alot better next year.

  • Caboose

And people think Dwight is immature…

  • Caboose

    Way under.

  • Caboose

    Not always…
    2011-2013 Mavericks
    2011-2013 Celtics
    2002-2005 Kings
    2001-2002 76ers
    2007-2009 Hornets

LeBron leaving depends on how much contribution he gets from Wade and Bosh next year.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Andrew Bynum when 100% healthy is an elite center in the NBA great inside scorer great rebounder great inside defender not to mention a 2 time NBA champion center he will have a sudden impact on this team the cavs roster is too loaded not to make the playoffs next season they are loaded in the frontcourt and they have a young superstar phenom in Kyrie Irving who in my opinion is the best point guard in the league Cleveland will be the surprise team of the league in 2013

    Cleveland starting lineup

  • LLC#12

Good point and good examples. Out of curiosity, could you see Bosh and/or Wade taking pay cuts next season to keep LeBron and strengthen the roster? Nearly the whole Heat roster could be free agents next summer, a cheaper Wade and Bosh and a tonne of cap room to build around him would look pretty attractive to LeBron.

  • aj

    LMAO made my day

  • http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjIeIA3G2s5UPQfRPYFyFDw Hart26

For the money CLE got him at (Only 6 mil guaranteed), thats a steal. Playoff team now, if they weren’t already. Wonder if they trade Andy now, could go back to the bench, but an expiring contract for a player like him is quite the trade piece…

  • Basketball_iQ

Varajao won’t be starting,,, the #1 pick is….

  • TV63

Nor will he for the Lakers either.

  • Not Charles Barkley

    Here I was thinking I am a loser…

  • Mike Gilbert

    nah TT is starting

  • robb

How can anybody trust his knees? I hope the Cavs can have a healthy Bynum but I seriously doubt it.

  • Stainless

What a pickup, now all we have to do is watch his Philly highlights to get ready for what’s in stock for the 13-14 season.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I’d put the chances of him playing less than 50 games at 65%.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Tristan Thompson is a much better player than Anthony Bennett my dude.
And, Anderson Verajao may start anyway.
Also, they signed Jarrett Jack, who will be a huge part of their rotation.

  • fivechainz

this squad is doing things. And imagine if LeBron comes back. Kyrie-Bron-Bynum(If he actually tries)

  • berkamore

If they three peat. NONE. If they don’t, only God knows…………

  • Nathan Shane Long

you stupid Bennett was picked to make up for taking Thompson who has been a BUST so far no player in the league last season got his shot blocked in the paint more than Tristan Thompson beside that you saying Bennett wont start HEY IDIOT WHEN IS THE LAST TIME THE 1ST F’N OVERALL PICK DID NOT START FOR THE TEAM THAT PICK HIM?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, he was a bust? He put up 11 pts and 9rbs on 48% shooting in 31 minutes last season, with a PER (which matters to teams, maybe not you) of 16.1……which is nothing close to a bust.

it feels good to be “you stupid”

  • RLW

I highly doubt that TT will start over Bennett

  • Nathan Shane Long

look here you F’N “TROLL” Anthony Bennett is better than Thompson period Bennett has far more offensive versatility than Thompson will ever have Thompson has no offensive skills at all and tell me what the hell does Andrea Bargnani got to do with anything huh? serious guy I KNOW YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON BEING THE BIGGEST TROLL ON THIS WEBSITE I DONT KNOW WHY BUT YOU CLEARLY DO AND YOUR OBSESSION WITH TALKING BASKETBALL ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THINKING YOUR “RIGHT” EVERY TIME TELLS ME YOU HAVE NO F’N LIFE SO GO JUMP OFF THE BRIDGE YOU LIVE UNDER TROLL!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

logically explain why an undersized PF is going to start over a guy who almost averaged a double double last year and grew leaps and bounds from year 1 to year 2?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

.”and tell me what the hell does Andrea Bargnani got to do with anything huh”

Are you this stupid on purpose, or nah?
Anthony Bennett was the number one pick because there wasn’t a standout player in the draft. #1 pick is prestigious and everything, but once you get to play actual basketball, it means jack sh*t.

  • RLW

TT isn’t that much bigger than Bennett to begin with. And if anything I see them using TT as trade bait for who idk? But I just can’t see Cleveland not starting the No. 1 barring injury.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Uhm, Tristan Thompson is 6’8″ without shoes on. And has a 7’1.5″ wingspan.

Anthony Bennett is 6’7″ WITH shoes on. And has a 7’1″ wingspan……

I mean, do you even know anything about Anthony Bennett? Why would they start him, he’s going to be a complete liability defensively playing the 4, his offensive game is closer to Small Forward than it is Power Forward. I mean, I see the idea behind him starting, but I don’t think you go for “concept” over “ability” — and Thompson will be a better player this year. That i have no doubt of.

  • RLW

I compelety get what your saying here. But Cleveland is going to start even if it doesn’t match logic only because he was drafted No. 1, Cleveland should have traded the pick in my view

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

why does that mean he has to start? Andrea Bargnani didn’t start. nobody chastised The Raptors about it…..i don’t see how Cleveland, a smaller market, with 2!! better players who play the same position, can’t in good conscious bring him off the bench. Especially if Varejao is who they peg as the starter initially.

  • RLW

I think bringing Varejao off the bench is a better move than having bim start with Bynum. But I guess your about the whole Bennett starting thing. I guess only time will tell.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

now i could see Bennett starting if he can defend 3′s. Mike Brown doesn’t love Alonzo Gee like Byron Scott did. So there may be a spot for him there. But i don’t think, especially in Mike Brown’s system, that Bennett starts over two bigger, better, more experienced defenders.

  • RLW

But the question can he play the 3 offensively if not then he will just be a guy there to defend the 3 if he can even do that

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he can play the 3 offensively. He shot three 3′s a game in college at 39%, and was deadly from mid range. In Mike Brown’s system, he would much rather play big, then play athletic. (well, banking on the past).
the only way i see Bennett being a starter at the 4 is if Andrew Bynum is hurt.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Bargnani got starters minutes at center for the raptors during 06-07 so try again nerd ass troll anyway Bennett is the second coming of Larry Johnson really Bennett,Oladipo,Noel,Mclemore were elite level prospects this draft class will be better than last years

  • RLW

Had no idea tbh I didn’t follow UNLV at all so outside of sports analysts I don’t know what the kid can do

  • shockexchange

Hairfro says “There are more ATMs in Cleveland than there are in Dallas.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, it’s not like a normal year where the #1 pick is down to 1 or 2 guys.
Anthony Bennett was DraftExpress’ 8th ranked player in the draft. And he went 1st overall.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    starters minutes is not starting.

  • Nathan Shane Long

he started two games though geek BTW Anthony Bennett is not Derrick Williams

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

OH MY GOD. He started 2 out of 82 games? You know what, if you call that a “starter” then you are right. Anthony Bennett may well be a starter this year. He may even start 1 whole game! won’t that be exciting, and a crowning achievement. You should throw a parade that day. If it comes.
    Who cares about Derrick Williams?

  • Nathan Shane Long

troll you talk about Bennett like he Williams like bennett cant play the 4 even though that all he played at UNLV was power forward he is a tweener combo forward like Williams is

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And he isn’t good enough to start for Cleveland. Especially with Mike Brown

  • Nathan Shane Long

okay nerd obviously you’ve let all these basketball “smartmark” websites brainwashed with their insignificant data thinking you know it all LOL Mike Brown will start him over Thompson end of discussion dont even bother to reply im done “DEBATING” WITH YOUR TROLL A$$

I often wonder how many times vaj was told to stop running inside during his youth…breaking stuff, holes in walls…

  • Bruce Wayne

Focusing only on the injury aspect of Bynum’s case, and not his immaturity or anything else, can you explain how it would be possible NOT to gain weight when you can’t run or work out?
