Andrew Wiggins Wants to Play for the Toronto Raptors

by Marcel Mutoni / @ marcel_mutoni

Barely out of high school, and already, it could be argued that Andrew Wiggins is the most promising basketball talent that Canada has ever produced.

After winning the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Award Tuesday, Wiggins told reporters that his preference would be to play for the Toronto Raptors once he makes it to the NBA.

Per ESNEWS (via the Toronto Sun):

“I would like to say the Raptors, I want to play for them,” said Wiggins, who has been spotted many times sporting a Raptors cap. The team would need quite a bit of lottery luck in order to make Wiggins’ wish come true, but there’s always free agency down the line.

Wiggins, a Thornhill native, averaged 23.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game for Huntington Prep in West Virginia in his final high school season.

It would take a near-miracle for Toronto to land Wiggins, the likely top pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. The Raptors are a young team on the rise, and don’t appear to be in tank mode moving forward (though their fans and front-office probably wish they were now.)

Andrew Wiggins will put in a year of service at the University of Kansas before making some down-trodden NBA fanbase very happy. It likely won’t happen near his hometown, however, despite his wishes.

    Raptors going 0-82 then!

  • axel

    Ok…Please Trade Rudy Gay now

  • Rudy’s Gay

Raptors going 0-82! 25 percent chance baby! Twenty-Five!!

  • Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

Masai, you heard the man. Err, kid.

  • Dagger

If this team gets more than 30 wins next year I will be heartbroken.

Wiggins on the Raptors would mean everything to Toronto basketball fans.

  • Lloyd

This won’t happen. Raps don’t seem to be embracing tank mode and have a good shot of making it into the playoffs this year. Besides, if we’re going to talk about players that wanted to play for the Raptors coming to Toronto, I’ll take KD over Wiggins!

  • MUBWAR

if KD ever joins the raptors, I am moving permanently to tdot. bye bye ottawa

  • RunNGun

We’ll see you in either Charlotte or Sacramento, kid.

  • RunNGun

You can have the worse record in the league and a team like the Cavaliers with Nick Gilbert will swoop in and take that first pick from you in Seacaucas, NJ. Just ask Charlotte, Orlando, and those bouncing lottery balls.

hypothetical question: with all the hype surrounding wiggins, what is the least amount of ppg he could average and still be the number one pick?

  • Markus437

Maybe in 2021 when he’s an unrestricted free agent

  • Markus437

    12?

  • Enigmatic

Reminds me of when Dwight Howard was a senior in HS how he would tell everyone how badly he wanted to play for the Hawks. And now this offseason he wouldn’t even give his hometown team the time of day lol

  • spit hot fiyah

i was thinking 13, it would off course depend on how well other prospects played as well.

    See you in Orlando

  • bike

It could happen. He might not live up to the hype after one season at Kansas and this is considered to be one of the most stacked classes in a decade. Lots of competition.

It will be very, very interesting to see how these ultra-hyped prospects perform at the next level. Bound to be some surprises and disappointments.

people forget about steve nash quick… i get the hype but Nash is Mr Canada

  • Enigmatic

I think there’s no way, if healthy, that Wiggins isn’t the number one pick.

The Kentucky kids, while they should be outstanding pros, aren’t a threat because they’ll be competing with each other, essentially, for minutes and stats.

Jabari Parker could have a better statistical season than Wiggins, but he won’t go higher than second. Marcus Smart could also have a better season statistically, but he’s no threat either.

Bottom line is, Wiggins’ potential is so sky-high, that even if he has a horrible season, any GM with the number one pick will still draft him and chalk up his season as perhaps not fitting into Bill Self’s system or even just having an off year, as opposed to passing on a potential superstar.

  • bike

I’d go as low as 10 as long as his raw athletic ability remains evident and he demonstrates a solid overall game.

  • RayJr

I think first half of the season he needs to adjust and averages a modest 10-12 ppg and in the second half he gets comfortable and bumps that up to 18-20 ppg with some 30 point games in between. So I’m saying his season average would be at least 16-18 ppg.

Would be a phenomenal story. And a great cover

  • LP @ThisisEther

but the Hawks got a token visit from him….

  • LP @ThisisEther

0 ppg…Kyrie sat out most of his season and still was #1.

NO GM will pass on him. Its that real. He can sit out this year, and get drafted. Or play the first game and score 4pts and break his foot and still go #1.

  • shockexchange

That’s a true “alpha male” attitude. Imagine if the top players from Canada joined him in Toronto. That could be special.

  • underdog

Well, he can always pull a Kobe.

  • Jerome

Until Wiggins wins two mvps in a row, let’s lay off the best from Canada talk.

  • Dfrance

I think it depends on how he looks playing. Is he not scoring, but the potential still there? If so, then he’s still the #1 pick. Is he not scoring because he flat out stinks? Then his stock might drop.

  • K_HOLIDAY

If you end up in Toronto, I hope you know you can never ever ever ever leave (Lebron James voice)

  • qwer

If this happened, Masai will look like a prophet LOL

  • Nathan Shane Long

he could just pull a Steve Francis on draft night

  • spit hot fiyah

i agree, that was the point of the question. so even if he avg 7 a game does he go number one? there has to be some floor right?

  • danpowers

just a question: would andrew wiggins be allowed to refuse enterding the nba draft and just sign with toronto during the summer?

  • Mack

This is what bothers me with the Raps and Wiggins; How can you be so certain Toronto would even get the first pick… IMO tanking is NOT the way to approach this situation. If anything they should attempt a trade or sign him after he’s been drafted.

  • Max

Probably not, I think everybody who wants to play in the NBA has to enter the draft, otherwise teams like the Lakers, Miami atm,.. could just sign all these ‘next big things’.

  • danpowers

how does it work then that some guys join the league undrafted every once in a while? did they have to apply for the draft and get rejected to get cleared to do that?

  • Max

I think so, I have never read or heard anything about it, but that’s what would make the most sense right.
So you put your name in the draft, if you don’t get drafted you are free to sign anywhere you want I guess.

  • danpowers

then he’ll definitely have to pull a steve francis lol

  • RKJ92

I would be sooooo happy lolz

  • Basketball_iQ

As long as he doesn’t enter the draft,,,,, he can get to Toronto that way but everyone wants the ceremonial entrée into the league,,,, hugging mom’s, putting the hat on, and shaking the commish hand

  • akpitta

im pretty sure if you are over a certain age (something like 25) you can just sign with team as euro players do but if you are under this age you must go into the draft and if you dont get drafted then you may sign with someone

  • BugEyes

He will be just another Terrence Ross or derozan

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No player can play in the NBA until they have been made eligible for at least one draft.
    .
(I am sure there are approval processes a player can go through with the league to bypass the draft, but that would probably still include some degree of compliance from other teams).

  • danpowers

seems like he would have to pull a steve francis then to get to the raps

  • Max

Euro players still get drafted, look at what happened with Copeland and Prigioni for example.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

Can he play a game in college first

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Francis said he wouldn’t play for a specific team. Not that he would only play for one team. No rookie will ever be able to force himself onto the team he wants.

  • danpowers

maybe he needs to take some PR lessons from mwp, threatening the league to become a head case for any team but the raps lol. “it always seems impossible untill its done” – madiba

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, with his talent, i don’t even think that would work. (he’s not really that type of kid, just incase you don’t know a lot about him, he probably just said to a question about playing for the Raptors, “yeah, i’d love it” — he went to Kansas just to avoid attention)

  • akpitta

yeah Prigioni was never in the or ever went undrafted he just signed with the knicks similar to the guy who just signed to detroit from spain
