Atlanta Hawks to Sign Paul Millsap for $19 Million

Free agents Paul Millsap and DeMarre Carroll have reached agreements with the Atlanta Hawks, reports the AJC. Millsap’s deal is worth $19 million over two years: “The agreement with Millsap came hours after the Jazz renounced his rights upon agreeing to a trade with the Warriors. In that deal, the Jazz obtained the expiring contracts of Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush. Millsap made $8.6 million last season and had an $11 million cap hold. The Hawks also agreed to terms on a two-year, $5 million deal with Millsap’s former Jazz teammate forward DeMarre Carroll. Per NBA rules, the contracts cannot be signed until July 10. The moves could signal the end of Josh Smith’s tenure in Atlanta. The unrestricted free agent, who spent nine seasons with his hometown Hawks, is testing the market. He has met with the Pistons and Rockets.”

What is Utah doing to their team!?! First big Al and now Millsap. Who’s left besides kanter?

they got favors……burks, hayward, favors, kanter young team on the rise

  • Redd

    Jabari, the great Mormon Hope.

  • LP @ThisisEther

alot of up and coming guys, check the roster bro…decent amount of talent, and for cheap

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Favors and Kanter. This is good for Utah, they can finally develop their young guns.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

wtf why is Houston not making pitches to Millsap’s people? Dammit!

  • roscoe

Millsap and AL get exposed… they are above average, but they consistently get outplayed by the league better front courts or shall i say “gatekeepers” to advancing in the playoffs.

    good job UTH, cut bait.

  • interlagos

Worth it. Josh smith is gone.

  • Guest

If Atlanta gets Asik, then they`ll have Horford, Millsap, and Asik in their front court. Not bad. Horford could finally return to his natural position of PF while Asik starts at C and Millsap comes off the pine.

I think Atl should trade Josh Smith and Jeff Teague for Asik and a starting SF (perhaps Parsons), and pickup free agent Jarrett Jack to start at point.

  • spit hot fiyah

Yeah would be thé perfekt Four for them, i Guess all their attention wa s on Howard, but they lett this one slip

  • OfftheWall87

It’s time to develop Kantor and Favors. Both have shown flashes when they’ve gotten playing time. With Trey Burke and Hayward. Give them a few seasons. They’ll be good.

  • initbruv

I’m just hoping we can keep the team together. If the players are about it and the management is patient, we can have a hell of a team in a few years.

  • Junkie

Do you see the Jazz being Contenders possibly?

  • initbruv

This year? No. We’re still not deep enough and we have a really young team and an inexperienced coach. We aren’t likely to sign a superstar any time soon so our best bet is to build a team that is together long enough to gel and hope for like a 2004 Pistons-esque squad. Why, what do you think?

  • pposse

damn the Hawks are getting BIG

  • RKJ92

No, the team is too young, your SF can’t play defense (Gordon Hayward), your starting PG just got drafted (Trey Burke), your PF and Center (Favours & Kanter) hardly got to play together and are starting for the first time this year, holes in your SG position, and a semi decent bench. You will see your record around 41-41 based on pure talent alone. Give this team time to gel and if they’re able to add a superstar (someone with the ability to create their own shot) then and only then will they contend. Even the 2004 Pistons had Rip Hamilton, and Chauncy Billups to create shots when there were none to go to. This team as constructed now have a ceiling of about 48-50 wins tops until they get a superstar.

  • initbruv

Thanks Debbie Downer. I was just trying to hang on to a glimmer of hope before reality kicked in, but you took that away from me ;)

  • Caboose

Dwight wants Smith, not Millsap. That’s where all of Houston’s energy is going, I believe.

  • spit hot fiyah

sure, i just think millsap would fit their offense much better, i was lobbying for millsap to houston earlier in the spring, just based on the style of play.they would have to change their offensive approach somewhat with smith since he canät really shoot from the outside.

  • RKJ92

Lmaoo sorry dude.. :-p it’s better to know the truth though, no? put it this way though.. if Kanter develops into a force which im kind of iffy on.. though he’s shown flashes, your team could be realllyyy good! think of like a knockoff Memphis lol

  • initbruv

    Haha I’ll take that!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Seems like Houston is targeting Ryan Anderson first. As of this comment, Houston and Atlanta haven’t had a real discussion about a Smith for Asik/Lin trade. It would likely take Parsons to get ATL to give up their cap space. Which is too steep for Houston.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Who would the Rockets trade for Anderson? Asik straight up? I thought David Aldridge said this deal was dead too?

  • Basketball_iQ

Burks, The kid from Colorado,,, is the shooting guard of the future for the Jazz. And he’s not bad, he’s developing. Trey Burke is the piece that’ll make this team decent. They were always missing good pg play. I watch the Jazz and I think they have a bright future,,, it’s possible to win games and not have to go get a “shot creator” via free agency. Okc, golden state did it via draft,,, or you weren’t paying attention the past few years. And 48-50 roof for this team isn’t bad either. I like that.

  • Basketball_iQ

Ryan Anderson is a perfect fit…. Underrated

  • RKJ92

In no way, shape, or form is Alec Burks the shooting guard of the future for the Jazz.. that’s hilarious you could even think that he could be haha. Alec Burks is a SOLID player at best and completely unproven with 2 years in the league already, did I mention he can’t play defense either? ya he has a defensive efficiency of 109 comparible to DeMar DeRozan, and don’t get me started on how much he frustrates me. Secondly you CANNOT say that Trey Burke is the missing piece that will make Utah decent he hasn’t even played ONE game in the nba.. at his size he could very well be a bust, you NEVER know.. making assumptions like this are unethical, and make you look hopeful, not being a realist of the player situations at hand. Lastly this: ” it’s possible to win games and not have to go get a “shot creator” via free agency. Okc, golden state did it via draft,,, or you weren’t paying attention the past few years” — does not make sense.. Utah as currently contructed WILL NOT rise to the next tier of a great teams because they do not have someone that can create their own shots.. EVERYTEAM that won a championship, or was elite had one. Why are you bringing up OKC and GS as well when they had Durant, and Curry? this makes absolutely no sense at all.. I am a basketball enthusiest, I have league pass, watch every team, and get updates sent straight to my phone every hour, i’m not the guy you want to argue with here.

  • provo101

you’re joking, right? If Hayward doesn’t play good defense, I really don’t know who in the league does (especially on the Jazz). I watched over 60 games last season and I can’t remember how many times Hayward was THE ONLY player to run back on d. http://youtu.be/SHDA_mZTpgs
    I rest my case.

  • RKJ92

LOL! you actually think Hayward plays defense? you realize he’s to big and slow to guard SFs, and to short + skinny to guard PFs, and that’s why his defensive rating between his 3 seasons in the NBA is 111 points.. that means WITH HAYWARD ON THE FLOOR Utah is giving up 111 points to there opposition every single game he starts… he is a terrible defender -.-’

  • RKJ92

and to add you used youtube to prove your point to me.. wtf is wrong with you? that tells me nothing, there is no fact there its just a video of him hustling, that doesnt prove to me he plays defense though? where as I have cold hard evidence he couldnt guard Luke Walton..

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/haywago01.html

  • provo101

THAT is your evidence? Have you watched ONE Jazz game? You clearly have no idea what are you talking about. You can quote the stats as much as you want. Other than Favors he is the only player to fight for every position, run, hustle and help on defense. Anyone can look at numbers and pretend to be an expert on the subject, but I ask again, have you seen a single Jazz game last season??

  • provo101

yeah, you can come up with your theories on numbers as much as you want. like I said it is clear you haven’t seen any games. Hayward’s defensive plays turn around games, why? because he runs back and defends. How many players would just give up on that Spurs play with Neal being wide open for a layup? In fact everyone other that Hayward did. What happened after that? The team got into the game and they won. But I guess stats won’t tell you that. You have to actually WATCH the game to appreciate details like that.

  • RKJ92

I HAVE LEAGUE PASS MAN, I ALREADY SAID THAT, jesusss… I watch a BUNCH of teams Jazz are one of the teams yes. I am a huge Derrick Favors fan since he was in HS, and playing for G Tech so that’s why I follow the Jazz.. and your EYES may be one thing, but statistical evidence of how he plays is the truth.. if your arguing cold hard statistics you have NO argument..

  • RKJ92

It’s not a theory it’s ACTUAL statistics -.-’ wow.. I can’t even have this conversation with you. You are too thick headed for me, you wanna have this conversation talk to @disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus he will set you straight with this ish’, Kobe fans have the same arguments as you, saying you have to see with your eyes rather then stats, well I’ve watched Hayward on plenty Jazz games he is NOT the defensive guru you think he is, and have pure evidence to back it up.

  • provo101

Well, I have Jerry on my side though:

“He does a lot of things that don’t show up in the stat sheet.” the Jazz coach (Jerry Sloan) said of Hayward.

(from an article entiteled: “Utah Jazz: Gordon Hayward is more concerned about defense than shooting” LOL)

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700073841/Utah-Jazz-Gordon-Hayward-is-more-concerned-about-defense-than-shooting.html?pg=all

  • RKJ92

Like your essentially saying: “Gordon can play defense because I watch Utah games so im telling you he can.” — where as I actually have evidence to back up what i’m saying PLUS I watch Jazz games as well, you understand?

  • RKJ92

ANY person affiliated with the JAZZ organization is going to say this.. it doesn’t mean ANYTHING.. goddd..
    .
And Dwayne Casey says all the time that DeMar DeRozan is concerned with his defense more then anything! even his 3 point shooting issues because DeMar and Hayward have one thing in common they both SUCK at defense!
    .
    Your points mean nothing man..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It doesn’t seem like anything is rematerializing yet. I was just pointing out that is Houston’s first target

  • provo101

“I can’t even have this conversation with you…”
here is where I 100% agree with you!
the only argument you have are sheets with numbers. this was my point AND THAT’S WHAT SLOAN WAS TALKING ABOUT! Hayward is a good defensive player, next to Favors best in Utah. Statistics tell you only partial truth about ANY player, any game or any event for that matter. It’s an easy way to generalize about things you don’t know much about.

  • provo101

Well it doesn’t seem so, because if you watched the games last season you wouldn’t write about how “Hayward can’t play defense”. Plus, like I said I am not the only person beveling in Hayward’s defense. I could just paste more links to articles or youtube videos or tweets of people praising his defense, but we both know that you’d always find some ridiculous argument like “ANY person affiliated with the JAZZ organization is going to say this.. “

  • provo101

statistics are only PARTIAL representation of anything. what you are missing entirely is the CONTEXT. here’s another argument, this time NOT mine:

“After watching a few hours of film I have three takeaways to Gordon Hayward’s defense. First and most importantly, he battles on every play, I didn’t see a single play where I thought he didn’t give all the effort needed on that possession. Second, he is a good defender who at times is a very good defender. Lastly, his only deficiency that was really noticeable is on the pick and roll against a smaller player he has a hard time getting off the pick and getting back to the quicker guard. If I had 5 players on the floor who defended like Gordon I would have a top 10 defensive team in the NBA.” – http://tinyurl.com/k4t3vxp
