Boston Celtics Thank Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett With Full-Page Ad (PHOTO)

Classy move by the Boston Celtics, as they pulled out a full-page ad in the Boston Globe honoring Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, who were traded this summer to the Brooklyn Nets. The ad pays tribute to the 2008 NBA championship victory: “The Celtics have offered a public thank you to Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett with a full-page ad in Friday’s Boston Globe sports section. Pierce and Garnett were traded to the Brooklyn Nets in late June. The Celtics also shared the message via social media, tweeting ‘You will always be Celtics.’”

    Mad props.

  • Jason Carter

haha, glad they left ray out.

  • K_HOLIDAY

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I know what they were going for, but if I were Pierce and KG I wouldnt give a sh**! This is like ur girlfriend saying ” We should see other ppl, but I will always love you”…. GET OUTTA HERE!

  • Jose1323

It’s not like that. Paul Pierce didn’t want a rebuilding, and Kevin Garnett want to be with Pierce, so the the Celtics move both to a contender team in the same division.

  • DjSkee

hope lakers do the same for metta!

  • Lil_Stratboy

    wow no ray Allen?

  • RKJ92

I knowww! what a snake move… Ray Allen helped win that championship as much as PP, and KG did..

  • Lil_Stratboy

A little bit more if you look at the stats. We can argue that Ray was supposed to be the Finals MVP as he had the better series of the big three.

  • vINSANITY

They shoulda put JET as well to really piss off ray

  • LLC#12

Ray left a year earlier before they blew the team up and were going to try for one more run, that’s the difference.

  • RKJ92

I’d argue he could share the MVP with KG but KG really was the better player, and contributor to that team hands down.

  • RKJ92

That doesn’t make it right though.. :/

  • LLC#12

Well, not in my opinion, but I think at the time a lot of Boston fans felt betrayed by Allen, whereas none of them feel betrayed by Pierce and Garnett now, because they understand their reasons.

  • RKJ92

All I’m saying is in life when a better opportunity is given to you; you never pass it down.

  • Sancheezie

you use hashtags and constant run on sentences on articles? interesting

  • bike

No Doc Rivers? Maybe another ad separate for Doc that says ____ You?

  • OfftheWall87

Going to be strange seeing those two hold up Nets jerseys next week when they’re introduced. Took years for me to get used to seeing KG in a Celtics uniform. He’ll probably be retired before I get used to seeing him in a Nets uniform.

  • truf

Yea they’ll do one just like Indi did.

  • truth

Ive been watching/idolizing Capt. Truth my whole life. its almost an insult to thank him for just the ship or to see him alongside anyone in his departure. I know a newspaper ad is not a big deal regardless but I hope the city of Boston shows a bit more of a long term memory in remembering the integrity of PP and not just his efforts with the big 3.

  • RyanT1992

Why would they have put Ray in? The article was thanking PP and KG, who were traded. Ray left in free agency.

  • Dagger

With all due respect to the Timberwolves, I wish we could have seen KG and Pierce play together since they both entered the league. Garnett posted much better numbers in Minnesota, but to me he reached his peak during that first year in Boston.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Celtics did them both a favor by trading them to Brooklyn, where they actually have a chance at winning something in the playoffs. Why would they be mad?

  • Will Lee

    yeah mr serious

  • OfftheWall87

Ray left a year ago…why would they include him now?

  • OfftheWall87

Would have been fun to see. As an Iverson fan, I wonder what would have happened had AI been traded to Minnesota instead of Denver in 06. Heard KG and AI both wanted it to happen.

  • Max

Pierce is a Net jersey is gonna feel so weird, I’m excited for opening night allready.

I still think this team was better than one trophy. They really could have won 2-4 championships had it not been for the Garnett injury in 2009, the Perk injury in game 6 in 2010, and the Perk trade just before the 2011 playoffs. Their success reminded the rest of the league that defense and toughness wins championships, and caused waives of superstars to leave their franchises to team up with other stars so they can win now. While Lebron, Bosh, Melo, D12, Amare, etc. all came across a bit douchey when they headed for greener pastures, there was something really classy about Pierce, Garnett and Allen. They would pose for “big 3″ promos but would constantly emphasize the team concept and downplay their individual roles. Garnett brought a defensive culture with him to Boston and held his teammates accountable. When the team failed it was never attributable to selfishness. Unlike the 2006 Heat and the 2011 Mavs, these guys were far from being a one-hit wonder.
