Brooklyn Nets Sign Andrei Kirilenko

Mikhail Prokhorov has done what seemed inevitablehe signed a fellow Russian. Andre Kirilenko is joining the Brooklyn Nets on a two-year deal. Per NBA.com: “The Brooklyn Nets took a shot in the dark Wednesday that they could convince free agent forward Andrei Kirilenko to take $3.1 million next year to play for them when he walked away from $10 million in Minnesota. The gamble paid off. Kirilenko agreed to a two-year deal Thursday with a player option for the second year, adding to the Nets’ acquisition of talent this offseason. He will join Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry, who all came from Boston in the June mega-trade with the Celtics, as Brooklyn continues to go all in to try and win now. Kirilenko didn’t want to play for a rebuilding team that could have offered more. He also was concerned that proposed sign-and-trade deals with good teams that could have netted him more money could have dried up in the next few days. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, like Kirilenko, a Russian native, did speak with Kirilenko during the courtship. But the chance to win was just as big a factor as nationalistic pride. ‘At this point of his career, he’s fortunate to have made a lot of money,’ said Kirilenko’s agent, Marc Fleischer. ‘And while money is important, I think they convinced him that signing with a team that had a chance to win — and that had Russian ownership — was too good to pass up.’ Asked what he would tell people who wondered why Kirilenko would play for $7 million less next season, Fleischer said, ‘the same way Ray Allen walked away from a lot more money to play for the Miami Heat. And it worked out for Ray.’”

Nice pickup by the Nets. This makes them favourites in the east now.

  • Mariano

I’m pretty sure the Heat are still better as long as they have Lebron

  • LakeShow

Wow… This Net’s team is FULL ON man.

I picture Prokarov much like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons…
    Does that make Jay-Z Smithers?

I still don’t know if they are favored in the top 3. It’s a good step in the right direction though.

  • LLC#12

I was hoping he would go to a contender. I dunno if the Nets are one, but Andrei will definitely help them move closer

  • spit hot fiyah

wow 2 year deal for 6 million. he just opted out of 10 million for next season. whoops

  • spit hot fiyah

thinking about it though, there might some russian money under the table in this deal, tax free

  • Kev

kirilenko was looking for one last big paycheck and opted out of his contract to leave 10 million behind. now he earns 3 million with the nets. that backfired quickly

  • Lucentum

    my thoughts exactly

  • Kev

of course they aren’t. maybe they are better than the knicks now but that still makes them the 4th best team in the east. exactly where they were last season

Who do you have as 3rd best?

  • LakeShow

    Spain.

  • Redd

A #3-4 seed by wasting more money than any other team has in the Luxury tax era..

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

should have been there last year.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

    no. 1 seed

  • LakeShow

    Who’s 3?
They are honestly either #2 or #3 at worse now. About right for a max spender.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

They are in there, but I have a hard time putting them above Chicago and Indiana.

  • north

    Except older and slower.

  • dyop

hahahah! oh yeah! love your answer man,

  • leminhone

This team to me is starting to resemble the 2000 blazers team that was stacked, with Sheed, Pippen, Bonzi, Steve Smith, greg anthony, Sabonis, Dale davis, Augmon, shremph, stoudamire, – bascially a team with 10 starters, and two deep at each position. These guys are gonna be good. The difference is these guys have that alpha dog that can close out games, well a few of them.

  • LakeShow

Yeah the Bulls have a chance.
I guess both teams have to prove themselves now though.
This should be fun either way!

  • rande3p

someone else to play D on the miami/pacers wing players .. good pickup

  • Will Lee

or many ads deal in russia

  • Dagger

They’re better, but they are not indisputably better than a healthy Bulls or Pacers. Especially when you factor in the possibility of injury or dramatic, age-related falloff for Pierce and KG.

  • DK

    Good point.

When KG and Pierce go down, they are screwed. Pierce looked broken in the playoffs, and Garnett is not staying healthy, especially playing at PF. Nets now only have 2 perimeter defenders, Johnson and AK47, and Johnson is not even a great defender. So, when KG and Pierce go down, they will have no bench. Their bench really consists of Blatche, Evans, and AK47. And Evans is obviously very limited. I don’t believe Plumlee will pan out, and Terry is washed up. Also not a fan of Shaun Livingston as a backup PG. So, you got a old team, with no perimeter defense, and a limited bench. Sorry, not buying into all the hype. Feel free to reply…

  • RunNGun

Nice… AK can still play at a high level; not like the level during his Utah days but he does everything little thing that doesn’t show up in the boxscore. Brooklyn’s coming! Big mistake by Minny not resigning him.

    Last line = top post.

  • Ugh

    Nailed it.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

they swept the pacers last year. I know it wasn’t the playoffs but still.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

lol KG and Pierce will just shoot open jumpshots… How will they get hurt doing that?

  • Redd

    #1 seed? What..

  • Redd

    At worst?

Try 4(maybe 5) at best they’re 3 or 2 if Heat use a relaxed approach.

  • Dagger

    1. It wasn’t in the playoffs. The Bulls and Pacers also had a winning record against the Heat, in the regular season.
    2. The Pacers still finished with a better record than the Nets last year. The improvement of George and Hibbert, along with Granger’s return, should also make them better next year.
    3. The point wasn’t that the Pacers are definitely better than the Nets (although I think they probably are). The point: the Nets are still not indisputably better than the Pacers.

  • Caboose

i think he just wanted out of Minny. Why else would he take a $7million pay cut?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

To compete? And he is playing for his country’s richest guy. Probably some “wink wink” involved

  • Caboose

I’m not saying to compete. I just think he wanted out of Minnesota. Having Mikhail there is just icing at this point.

  • http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjIeIA3G2s5UPQfRPYFyFDw Hart26

KG and Pierce will also be guarding top talent in the East. Too slow too keep up with them, Pierce guarding Lebron, at his age? Garnett will also be guarding Carmelo possibly if he stays at the 4, which makes for him running around trying to keep up with him, and can lead to injury.

  • Caboose

I just thought of Homer at the Bat where Burns brings in MLB players to win a company softball game…man the Simpsons used to be so good.

  • LakeShow

Used to be…. They got rid of all the old writers :*(

  • LakeShow

    Points.
I was telling myself they would be better than the Bulls, but that all depends on D-Rose and health. I think they can compete with anyone below the Heat and maybe even give the Heat some trouble.
    **(If all goes well)**

  • LakeShow

#3 talent wise. They should be 3, but you have a point that the Pacers and Bulls won’t roll over. The Knick’s should f*ck around a little too in the RS.

  • Dagger

I respect that. I still think the names are bigger than the current talent but they could very well contend for a top seed in the East. If everything goes right for them they could go far in the playoffs, but with an unproven coach and aging, injury-prone players there’s also the possibility for serious disappointment. We’ll see.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

Granger will be traded. He will not mesh with the rising talent of PG.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

A consistent Deron Williams will prove my point.

  • Dagger

Very possible. But he’ll probably play a bit first to show potential suitors that he’s fully recovered. Either way, the point is that the Pacers will be better.

  • Redd

    Not at all
