Carmelo Anthony Doubts He’ll Sign With the Lakers in 2014

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Should Carmelo Anthony opt out of his deal with the New York Knicks next summer, the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the teams that will recruit him hard. (Melo, of course, isn’t the only superstar on their radar in 2014.)

Despite Kobe Bryant’s desire to play alongside him, Anthony doesn’t seem to think it’s very likely that he’ll bolt Manhattan for Hollywood.

Cornered by TMZ, Carmelo said “I doubt it” when it was implied he could be wearing purple and gold soon (via the NY Post):

Anthony was asked if he could see himself in “purple and gold” by the camera man/gossip reporter. “I doubt it …” Anthony said.

After some joking that led to suggestions he was headed to Los Angeles, Anthony said, “I don’t think you should read between the lines.” Anthony was asked about teaming up with his rival (LeBron) James, who as Anthony pointed out, he’s won two gold medals with. But as far as partnering up in the NBA, Anthony seemed less intrigued. “I don’t have them conversations,” Anthony said.

The 2014 NBA free agent class is a monster one, and the Lakers will be looking to spend on major talent. So far, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony are two stars who have publicly said they’re not all that intrigued by the idea.

Good, he knows how thé cba works and how impossible it will be for thé Lakers to Sign both him and James without Kobe taking a major Paycut

  • shockexchange

Good look on Melo’s part to not take the bait. The media is looking for website hits. Apparently, speculating on which “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the L” Horry Jr will align himself with so he can win a chip, equates to guaranteed hits.

  • LakeShow

Melo is considered selfish, uninterested on defense, a team killer, and shot happy.

But if he was on the Lakers with Robert Horry’s son, they together would create “the most talented team in the L”.

Something is rotten in the state of SLAMonline.

  • shockexchange

The point is that TMZ badgering Melo, The Kang, or Paul George about joining LA drives website hits, and it won’t stop any time soon. Your personal views on Melo notwithstanding, he was smart not to take the bait.

  • LakeShow

You would know a lil something about lame attempts to get website hits wouldn’t ya…

  • shockexchange

That’s it! You’ve gotten his dander up! The Shock Exchange tries to coach you Lake Act and all you do is give him back talk.

  • LakeShow

Your the young grasshopper here son.

melo and Kobe on the same? loool those 2 will average a combine 44 fga a game. i feel bad for the other 13 players on that squad

  • BugEyes

the NBA is turning into the NCAA!! friends recruiting, not a good look NBA

  • Evan Boland

Kobe, 01 Playoffs. 7.3 Rebounds, 6.1, Assists, 29.4 Points on 47% shooting. Can you saw, OG?

  • JML-G

Lakers wont get any superstar next summer, thats pretty much guaranteed

  • Jer dawg

Lakers should tank and rebuild with Lottery pick. No team has ever fueled so much made up nonsense player speculation than the Lakers. Every big free agent is speculated to go there. I’m a Laker fan and even then I cringe when I hear something nearly impossible. What are fans treated with now? Jordan Farmar, Nick Young as key free agents. Not bad if lakers are selling us a rebuild for next few years, but their expectations are like every NFL team; we have a chance next season! No you don’t. Not with Jim Buss and Mike D’Antoni on the team!

  • LakeShow

    Pfffttt…

Robert Horry once put up 13-7-3 on 40% when leading the Rockets in the playoffs….. By leading, I mean being a role player.

  • Datkid

Melo should actually leave NY’s incredibly incompetent front office and go to LA though. Like leaving Denver may not have been the greatest idea but this could actually work out for him.

  • RKJ92

LeBron James, 05-06 (very first year in the playoffs 21yrs old). 30.8ppg, 8.1rpg, 5.8apg, 1.4spg, 47.6% shooting Can you say, BETTER OG?

  • typical lebron fan

kobe 01 shaq was main man
lebron 05-06 lebron was main man
    see the logic my friend?

  • grgeblck

I don’t know who can help Melo win a championship. Vice versa might have a chance.

  • RKJ92

Kobe had almost 2 decades to best LeBron James very first playoff appearance at the age of 21 and couldn’t even come close.. see the logic my friend?

  • Evan Boland

Seems about equal to me.. 31-29.5, 8-6, 5-6.. Yeah, pretty equal. And that team didn’t even make it to the finals.. so. It’s hardly fair to compare.

  • Evan Boland

Lakers will get Kevin Love in 2015.

  • Truth Teller

“I don’t have them conversations,” well said. Only bia bias like Wade, Bosh and LB have those type of convos.

  • RKJ92

    Since when is 31ppg > 29 — 8rpg > 6 equal? the 6 assists they shared yes; but don’t make a claim that isn’t true.

  • no excusez

they need red and white mamba ASAP ….another title

  • Vince

Not only are you a goddamn bot but your argument is complete crap.

  • Vince

Love is a actually a plausible option, but I’d keep an eye out on the LaMarcus Aldridge situation in Portland, I could see him donning the purple and gold.

  • Shockexchange’s-father

Bots are plagiarizing ur work my friend, see above

  • Interdico Scriptor

Umm… even if he was (Melo), he’s not allowed to talk about it, is he??

  • Interdico Scriptor

Can I quote you on that?

  • Interdico Scriptor

After NYN and LAL both flunk this season we’ll see what happens eh??

  • JML-G

    yes, be my guest

  • pposse

thanks in large part by one Lebron James

  • pposse

kobe sustained his 01 playoff stats for a lot longer a period than Lebron James did his first playoff appearance. You see the “un-logic” in your statement my friend?

  • Basketball Coach

now this would be interesting. besides the Lakers are well known in getting big men on their roster so why not?

  • shockexchange

SE sees where you’re going with this, but RKJ92 is genuine in his comments and has been consistent. However, when the Shock Exchange first described Horry Jr as a “volume shooter” and “overrated,” there was darn near a mutiny. SE was taken aback by all the Horry Jr stans and Lakers fanboys. Certain people called him names, and even lobbied to have him banned from SLAM – “Can’t somebody do something about this guy?” I fear for the future of SLAM!” Now those same people are quoting him verbatim, yet refuse to site the source. SE is glad he’s not the only one who sees how cats are tryna jack his swag.

  • RKJ92

Thank you!! at least your willing to battle these Horry Jr d*ckriders with me, seems nobody else has the balls too because they’re afraid of the 1000 Horry Jr fanbase comments back..

  • Blarmac

I feel like Melo is always quick to point out that he has two gold medals.

  • shockexchange

No problem. People think the Shock Exchange is new to this site, but he’s been a commenter/visitor on here since The Kang was in high school. Back then all the SLAM commenters were extremely knowledgeable about basketball. When he recently started visiting the site more regularly, SE was taken aback by the “Horry Jr on MJ’s level” talk. When he labeled the guy a “volume shooter,” he was blindsided by the backlash on here – it really wasn’t that controversial.

It’s a long-winded way of saying that over the years, commenters have turned from “analytical” to “emotional” and behave like clicques on twitter or facebook. Horry Jr could pre-release an album on Samsung and it would break soundscan records.

  • Evan Boland

Well he had Shaq on his team.. Lebron was the only good player on his roster lol.

  • Evan Boland

    Exactly.
