Golden State Warriors Trying to Clear Cap Space to Sign Dwight Howard

Boosted by the positive July 1 meeting with free agent Dwight Howard — who could make his highly-anticipated decision today — the Golden State Warriors are trying to shed contracts to make room on their books to sign the superstar center. The Warriors are reportedly confident they can get rid of three contracts — despite the enormous challenges to do so — even if the Los Angeles Lakers refuse to engage in a sign-and-trade for DH. Per ESPN: “The Lakers have been adamant for weeks they would prefer to let Howard leave for nothing and bank the resultant salary-cap space in the summer of 2014, with many rival executives likewise convinced that L.A. would have real reservations about helping Howard land with a division rival. So sources say that the Warriors, in an effort to manufacture some financial flexibility to help their chances, have begun calling teams with salary-cap space to try to entice them to take expiring contracts off their books so they can clear a $20 million hole for Howard. Such a scenario would be challenging, some executives have said, but not impossible. The Warriors have three huge expiring contracts in Andrew Bogut ($14 million), Richard Jefferson ($11 million) and Andris Biedrins ($9 million). According to sources, they have tried to unload all three players this week to teams with cap room. Yet, Golden State likely would have to be willing to add assets to any potential deals to get teams interested. Sources say the Warriors have been willing to attach a future first-round pick to move one of their bad contracts since last February’s trade deadline, but potential partners tend to ask for prized youngsters such as Harrison Barnes or Klay Thompson — two of the more attractive young players in the league — when the subject of absorbing one of the Warriors’ big contracts is broached. [...] Sources say the Warriors got Howard’s attention during this week thanks to their pitch, which featured owner Joe Lacob, coach Mark Jackson, general manager Bob Myers and special Warriors consultant Jerry West.”

Eager to see what Dwight’s decision is. Has to be something he said to Golden State though if they’re trying to create space for him.

In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, with a healthy David Lee, Golden State has a team in place that can represent the western conference in the Finals. They are sitting in the catbird seat and should let Rent-A-Center court them.

Sportscenter just said expiring contracts for Bogut Richard Jefferson and Andris Biedris for Howard. That would be another Jerry West steal.

  • huami

I think GS will get howard. I can feel it. Those 3 guys (bogut, etc) will be in LA. Good trade for both of them.

  • OfftheWall87

That team now can’t get to the Finals. With Howard, they can. He got to the Finals with Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis…he can get there with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

  • shockexchange

With a healthy David Lee, GS squeaks past the Spurs.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

20 million between Jefferson and Biedrins…just wow

  • spit hot fiyah

Probably not, playing small ball with Barnes at the Four was thé thing that gave thé spurs thé biggest problems

  • OfftheWall87

    No, they don’t.

  • shockexchange

Playing small ball in stretches gave the Spurs problems. But with a healthy David Lee, they could have played small ball or played big, depending on the situation. There were times that they needed to get easy baskets inside or keep the Spurs off the boards. Barnes could not provide that.

it feels in gaps for lakers roster jefferson is a good back up at sf if bogut stop getting hurt..the lakers need a decent sf like rudy gay or deng mite could get granger for a steal

why in the world would LA help Golden State? Have you asked yourself that yet? Sportscenter is just saying things. They aren’t based in reality.

  • Stepfan Raiford

I have but it’s time for LA to help themselves. It’s obvious they don’t have a back up plan if/when Dwight bolts, and they need to get something in return for Howard. If Jerry West can pull this off like he did the Gasol trade when he was with Memphis, that would be incredible.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that doesn’t help the Lakers. They don’t need expiring contracts. The only player under contract after next season is Steve Nash. Gaining expiring contracts for an expired contract doesn’t help the team at all.

  • Stepfan Raiford

I agree nbk, but something is better than nothing in return.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no. not in this case. you are helping a team in your division compete for titles long term, in order to receive 3 guys you have no plan on keeping past the end of the season. that is not better than letting him walk. not at all.
    .
Especially considering the only chance Golden State has of getting Dwight is to do a sign and trade. They have no money available at all.

small ball worked because bogut was balling at the 5 and the 4 players surrounding him were doing well. bogut was rebounding and defending at a high level, even ezili gave them some respectable minutes a the 5. u can’t play small ball with lee on the court because he would be your 5, and would get eaten alive by Duncan and splitter

  • shockexchange

Giving up Bogut and Klay Thompson or someone else for D12 is like dating – “You know what ya got but don’t know what ya gon’ get.” If the Warriors stand pat at a minimum make make the WCF. In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, you need at least two big men to win a chip … unless of course you’ve got LeBron.

  • spit hot fiyah

is that a counter argument to what we were talking about?

  • shockexchange

With a healthy David Lee, GS squeaks past the Spurs – that’s the Shock Exchange’s position. He also thinks it puts them in the best position to compete next season and is a hedge against Bogut getting hurt of not repeating his playoff performance. If you feel otherwise then we’ll have to agree to disagree.

  • Stepfan Raiford

    That Andris Biedrins contract.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    what about it?

  • Stepfan Raiford

Is that why they dont have money?

  • spit hot fiyah

i would have to disagree. i don’t dislike lee but i don’t see him being healthy as making them a lock for the WCF. it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Ws took a step back this upcoming season.
their core of curry, klay and barnes will continue to develop so that is a positive. but landry and jack were both major contributors to their regular season and playoff success, and it seems like they won’t afford to re-sign either one.
and they won’t sneak up on anyone this year, teams will be ready for them

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well he’s one of the reasons. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state.htm
    .
the team is on the hook for $70 million next season, the salary cap is $58.5 million.

  • Stepfan Raiford

    sheesh

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

exactly. this is why some of the “news & rumors” are just fictional ideas some guy made up that people believed. Rumors should at least have some root in reality, but nope, not when it comes from Chris Broussard.

  • Stepfan Raiford

Hahaha nice little dig to Chris Broussard.

For real tho… Espn lives in never never land with some the sh1t they spit. LA would never help the once lowly W’s content in their division,,,
I like that Howard likes the Warriors but I hate that Klay and Barnes are in the discussions…. Without them, it’s a wash, not a come up for golden state,,, the Lakers are headed for the lottery if they don’t execute this trade and if they do complete it, Kobe is out of there with Klay’s arrival

  • Basketball_iQ

    Klay and Barnes for Howard???
    I would never do that.
LA is panicking bc they are headed for a draft limbo season…. That’s a season where you’re not in contention for a championship but you’re too good to be in the top 10 the draft.
This trad e would bail them out and I don’t want that
Gstate is good enough to get back to the western conference finals again with a healthy DLee.
And the W’s have to see sending either of those youngin’s over there sets them back a few years also.
If it wasn’t for Klay and Barnes, Curry wouldn’t have had the season he had. Imo

  • Basketball_iQ

Dump salary without giving up the young guns or dealing with LA,,, that’s the only way.
