Houston Rockets Pitched Josh Smith on a Pairing With Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard’s free agency has the potential to create enormous changes across the NBA landscape, and the Houston Rockets would love nothing more than to be the catalyst of such transformations. They reportedly pitched fellow free agent Josh Smith on the idea of possibly playing alongside Howard next season. Dwight, meanwhile, is off to the mountains to think about the Los Angeles Lakers and other desperate suitors for his services. Per USA Today: “If free agent center Dwight Howard ultimately decides to sign with the Houston Rockets, he may not be the only big-name free agent heading that way. According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the Rockets’ Monday meeting with free agent forward Josh Smith in Los Angeles included a discussion about a possible partnership with him and his childhood friend from Atlanta in Howard. Smith has long been known to be on the Rockets’ radar, but he is not viewed solely as a backup plan to Howard should he decide to sign elsewhere and the possibility remains of another superteam being created with Howard and Smith joining franchise centerpiece James Harden. [...] There would be serious hurdles to this sort of deal, but the Rockets may be able to get it done if they could convince Smith’s former team, the Atlanta Hawks, to take part in a sign-and-trade that would clear the necessary salary cap space to sign both players. To that end, a CBSSports.com report on Sunday indicated that the Rockets have been discussing possible trades involving center Omer Asik and point guard Jeremy Lin with other teams. Both players are scheduled to earn $8.3 million in each of the next two seasons, meaning they could possibly be moved as a way to free up the funds to bring Howard and Smith together.”

Interesting. Houston really going for the gusto aren’t they.

  • Rockwell

Wow. A lineup with Howard, Smith, Parsons, Harden and Patrick Beverley (?) would be pretty sick. They’ll have defense, length, athleticism, shooting. That will be a fun team to watch.

  • greg

If you want to compete with Miami, you have to take a pay cut like they did to sign other players

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Smith is a little overrated imo… I’d prefer Milllsap.

  • The Seed

Howard should resign with Lakers and Lakers trade Gasol for Smith. Thats a better team with Kobe.

  • Caboose

    1. Nash, Kobe, Metta, Smith and Dwight is not better than Beverly, Harden, Parsons, Smith, and Dwight.
    2. The Hawks would never take on Pau and his contract right now. Why do you think that’s a fair deal?
    3. Dwight won’t be signing with LA. Deal with it.

  • Caboose

A Smith Dwight tandem in the post would be the best interior D in the L though.

  • Jose

that’s just a terrible FT% with those two on the same team

  • pposse

too bad the league is geared towards playing small ball.

  • pposse

DH and Josh Smith together will be ‘Mental Midgetry’ personified

  • spit hot fiyah

” According to two people with knowledge of the situation,” they are getting deeper

  • pposse

the pay cut the big 3 took was like 10 million over 5 years i believe. Thats like 2 million a year

  • spit hot fiyah

they would have to change their offense somewhat with smith there, they can’t play one big and 4 outside with that lineup

  • Ugh

    Which isn’t a lot when you’re making 16-22 million a year.

  • Ugh

    Cruel. Possibly fair, though.

  • pposse

add that to the fact that them 3 together open up 1,000s of marketing opportunities for eachother, and they play in Florida where i believe there is 0 property taxes…all in all its very likely they made out more money then they would have anywhere else, if they were playing by themselves with a true max deal

  • Slick Ric

Yeah, but you still have to try to get easy buckets in the paint though, even the best shooters don’t make shots every game. I.e. Curry and Thompson

  • pposse

the only issue i have with the whole thing is how offensively inept the team will be in the low post, unless Dwight improved his offensive game. I agree with Teddy-the-bear and think they would be better off with a Dwight Milsap tandem down there.

The whole small ball comment was just my opinion on how small ball is more crucial for success in the nba now over having “over the top interior defense”

Though a Millsap/Howard tandem would be nice offensively it doesn’t replace the dynamic defensive duo of a possible Smith/Howard tandem. Like Caboose said they’d be the best interior D in the L.

  • pposse

but is the best interio D in the L indicative towards winning a championship? More so than a very potent interior offensive game? For the record i agree that a Dwight-Smith tandem would be the best interior d in the L; just not convinced that’s what it will take to win a championship right now.

  • Da-MeatHook

All dinosaur and ostrich jokes aside, what marketing opportunities did playing alongside Chris Bosh open up for Lebron James?

Each member of the “Big 3″ had to leave millions in guaranteed money on the table in order to create the Championship team that they did. Which is more than I can say for the Melos, STATs, and Kobe’s of the league.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Two totally made-up anonymous “sources” instead of one? WHOA DUDE.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

True, but Smith can’t shoot… and even worse, he likes to shoot… in an offense that needs shooters.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

IMO I believe it is. I look at that 08 Celtics team and the interior defense that KG/Perk brought which resulted in a title. Hell Smith/Howard gives you more offense than the example I just mentioned.

  • pposse

well to that point about what bosh did for Lebron i ask you this…does lebron james win 2 championships without chris bosh? (after watching this years playofffs, finals especially it seems as if the Heat won in spite of Bosh…but foreal) Now that he is a back to back champion expect Mcdonalds to ask Lebron if they can make a sandwich after him or Disney World to make a character after him, maybe even a movie.

  • pposse

but in 2010 the Lakers got revenge, in large part to Pau and the Lakers post game

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Well that and Perkins was absent in the last two games.

  • pposse

thats right nevermind that example then. The only issue I have with the example you gave was that that was in 08 and here we are 5 years later in 2013 which is not that long but the game changed a lot. A lot of teams are playing small ball, both the Spurs and Heat got to the finals with this style, im not sure if teams are supposed to adapt to it or play the game the way it was played for many many years.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I think it all depends on your system and personel. In today’s game you need athletes and I don’t think it was ever more obvious than this year’s finals. So with that being said a Smith/Howard tandem gives you that more so than Millsap/Howard IMO.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

How does this only have two up votes? lol

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Free-agent center Dwight Howard hopes to decide which team he will sign with by Friday, a source close to the talks told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The source also told ESPN that Howard’s final decision is “totally up in the air.”

    Wtf? lol

  • Clos1881

    And no state tax

  • Conor

Caboose the Comedian. The sole correct point you made was the second.

    i. LOL

    ii. Yes.

iii. Lin/Beverley, Harden, Parsons, Smith, & Howard is not only inferior to a healthy Nash, Bryant, ______, Smith, & Howard, but vastly inferior to the lineup that LA would be capable of surrounding Howard with next summer. Use your head.

  • Basketball_iQ

It makes sense tho,,,, the Rockets have to pitch him this way being that garbage teams land these players for boat loads of money and their career takes a nose dive (see Ben Gordon via Detroit, and now OJ Mayo via Milwaukee) smh

  • roxity

This will happen. This team will be nuts next year. People don’t realize how good Parsons is.

  • king_tut

i guess josh smith is a much better fit for rockets style of play..forget about DH12. rockets can spend that money to some role players..

  • Max

JSmoove is perfect for small ball, Dwight is also not that big and not too slow.
