JJ Redick and Eric Bledsoe Part of Three-Team Trade

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

The Bucks, Clippers and Suns have reached an agreement on a blockbuster trade sending JJ Redick and Jared Dudley to Los Angeles, Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler to Phoenix and two future second round draft picks to Milwaukee.

The Bucks helped facilitate the deal with a sign-and-trade of Redick, who will receive a four-year, $27 million contract from the Clippers.

Per Yahoo! Sports:

Phoenix can’t negotiate a contract extension with Bledsoe until after the deal is finalized on July 10. New Clippers executive VP and coach Doc Rivers had dinner with Redick on Tuesday night and further solidified Redick’s belief that joining the Clippers and competing for a championship was his desire, sources said. The Bucks traded for Redick at the February deadline and ultimately decided against re-signing him for the nearly $8 million per season the Clippers did. The Bucks get a trade exception back in the deal, but it has to be renounced because they’re under the salary cap. The Clippers and Suns will each send one future second round pick to the Bucks.

The deal was conceived and completed within 24 hours, beginning Monday and finishing early Tuesday afternoon. Once Chris Paul notified the Clippers officially that he would sign a five-year extension, Rivers was willing to part with Bledsoe in a deal, sources said.

Jared Dudley seems pretty pumped about moving on from the moribund Suns, and rightfully so. It will be interesting to observe what Phoenix does with Goran Dragic once the 23-year old Eric Bledsoe shows up.

JJ Redick will provide the LA Clippers with the perimeter shooting they desperately need, making life considerably easier in the post for DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin.

what is the reason the bucks did this for? 2 second round picks? good trade for the clips

  • OfftheWall87

    Clippers definitely got better.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

I like this move a lot for the clips. Tough giving up bledsoe, but I think they got a heck of a return.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Wow looks like the Clippers won the bulk of this trade. Not sure why the Bucks only wanted 2 second round picks unless they are trying to tank for the draft.

  • Ganchan

Because you can either let JJ walk for nothing or get some kind of a return with a sign and trade.

  • RayJr

    Mos def for the tank.

  • RunNGun

Good trade for all involved… getting Redick and Dudley in LAC is a coup.

  • Junior Taylor

Unless the Suns plan on trading Goran Dragic, it’s trade makes zero sense.

  • RunNGun

The Bucks are looking to land Wiggins and Tyus Jones next year.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

That has to be the only reason behind this trade.

  • danpowers

now “just” one solid backup point guad and a backup big and that clippers team looks pretty much like a legit contender to me

  • RayJr

nbk told me yesterday the Suns plan to play Dragic at the 2.

  • The Philosopher

The Clippers are going to be a problem.

  • LP @ThisisEther

2 2nd round picks for a guy that probably wasn’t even considering signing with the Bucks….Niceeeeee…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Man, Ryan McDonough turned Jared Dudley, with 3 years, and $12.75 million left on his contract, into a 22 year old, top 5 defensive PG, and a $9 million dollar expiring contract.
    .
LOL, how can you not understand what he’s doing?
    .
Man, the Clippers think JJ Redick and Jared Dudley puts them over the top? WHAT?
    .
Man, the Bucks……….the Bucks turned Tobias Harris into 2 second round draft picks.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

come on Taylor. He turned Jared Dudley into Eric Bledsoe and freed up $9 Million next summer. If I asked you a month ago, would you have ever said Jared Dudley would be worth that much?

  • Roy Blumenfeld

JJ Redick and Dudley give Chris Paul two very dangerous perimeter threats, which will work great in Doc’s system. They aren’t “better” talent wise. But they are a better fit for what L.A. will be doing.

I’d say every team did okay on this. The only thing I don’t like for Phoenix is that they put money into Dragic and used the 13th pick last year on Kendall Marshall. They now have too many point guards.

  • RKJ92

I swear I said this yesterday.. :/ Anyways great trade for all teams! Suns get a top defensive pg, Clippers get 2 solid role players, and Bucks get a top 10 pick because they suck even WORSE now + 2 second rounders not bad.. not bad..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Goran Dragic will play the 2. It won’t be awkward, it’s not like he’s remotely close to a traditional PG. and Jeff Hornacek is the coach, he sees Dragic a lot like himself. Kendall Marshall was a mistake. He cant defend, and he cant shoot. Lance Blanks is an idiot. McDonough is basically starting from scratch. .
I just don’t like spending $11 million a year combined on JJ Redick and Jared Dudley for the next 3 years. If your plan was to win a title, spending that money on them, and leaving DeAndre Jordan as your only serviceable Center (and barely at that) is a glaring, train wreck of a mistake. But they have the mid-level exception, I could change my mind depending what they do.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Eric Bledsoe will start at shooting guard idiot not point beside Goran in the starting five Bledsoe played SG at Kentucky beside John Wall he aint a NBA point he just has good handles anyway so far in his early career Bledsoe has been all hype now will see if he lives up to it flying solo in Phoenix

  • Roy Blumenfeld

I think it is too early to give up on Kendall after one season. His limited offensive abilities were known in college, but he is a great play maker. He still could be a serviceable backup. The Dragic idea only works if they don’t plan on winning many games next year. Since tanking for 2014 seems to be a fashionable choice, I assume that is what they are doing.

The Clippers are not done. Worst case scenario, they could always bring Turiaf or Hollins back then use the mid level on someone else. But I think they’ll make another deal.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, yeah? You talking to people in the organization or nah? The plan as of now is to move Dragic to the 2. I’m not speculating. Of course he will handle the ball more than a 2 would normally, but that’s the plan.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They are tanking (“starting over” to be politically correct). That’s the whole idea behind getting rid of their veterans. Drafting Alex Len. Hiring Ryan McDonough was a clear signal that they wanted to start over.

  • Roy Blumenfeld

I don’t know if the group they’ve assembled will be bad enough to get Wiggins, Parker, or Randle. Since it certainly isn’t playoff worthy they might as well try!

  • Rockwell

Haha the Bucks have no hope. How do you give up on a promising wing who put up 30 and 19 in a game for two second round picks? Why are they even bothering trying to resign Brandon Jennings? They might as well just join the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Gortat is gone. Worst case scenario by February. Beasley is being shopped, as basically free. Shannon Brown is on his way out or he will just be benched again. The plan is to get rid of everyone who would help the team win today. Keep everyone that helps tomorrow

  • Mike Gilbert

did they though? Neither Dudley nor Dudley is significantly better than Butler, plus they lost their fantastic backup pg

  • Otis

In and of itself, this isn’t a terrible deal for the Clippers. Dudley gives them essentially what Butler gave them at half the price (and is six years younger), and Redick is a solid, reliable shooter and a decent second-unit defender, the sort of player that any contender would want on their roster. But yeah, they really need to address their interior issues.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Right I’m not saying it hurts the Clippers. But it doesn’t change their chances at a title. That’s what it was intended to do. So that’s why I say I don’t really think it was worth it.

  • AndyK415

Isn’t Tyus Jones going to be a senior in high school still this coming year?

  • Nathan Shane Long

Dragic is a pure point guard dummy Bledsoe is not he has been a combo guard in his brief nba career that played mostly SG okay last season in the Clippers backcourt Bledsoe was the “SG” whenever Paul or Billups was in the game so why would the Suns put Dragic at shooting guard a position he has never played in his career use common sense idiot Phoenix wants Bledsoe to be their primary scorer next season here is Phoenix starting five
    PG.Dragic
    SG.Bledsoe
    SF.Beasley
    PF.Gortat
    C.Len

  • LakeShow

If this Clippers team grows into it’s shoes they can make it to the West Finals and possibly the finals with this current squad.

  • LakeShow

I don’t think it will really matter where they label them… at all.
Who was the PG for the Rockets last year?
    Harden or Lin?
You could argue Lin since his position was stated as such, but I say it was Harden.

  • LakeShow

I think Dudley and Dudley are better than Butler.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

man you are ignorant. i’m not out here wildly guessing, when is that part of this going to sink in? the plan, THE SUNS PLAN, is to have Dragic play the 2. It’s going to be a hybrid, 2 PG lineup, but technically Dragic will play the 2. Especially on defense.

    .

Beasley will not start. He will probably not even be on the roster. But he definitely won’t start. You putting him there is clear proof that you don’t know what you are talking about.

    .

Gortat is not going to play the 4…….LOL, he is being shopped heavily at the moment, and will be until he’s traded. Until that happens, he will start, Len will back him up, and get some tutoring from the guy. Other than that, the plan is not to have him playing next to Len, like was SARCASTICALLY mentioned by McDonough on local radio.

    .
And calling me idiot doesn’t make you right, and it sure doesn’t mean you know what you are talking about. I know people within the organization. There is no speculation in what i’m saying, it’s all relayed from people within the team. Why is that hard to understand?

  • OfftheWall87

Don’t need a fantastic backup when you have Chris Paul. Just need someone to hold down the fort while he rests. Bledsoe is more than that so they were going to lose him sooner or later. They got two good shooters for Chris Paul to pass to. Neither Bledsoe nor Butler are shooters. Dudley and Redick are also solid defenders. No question they got better.

  • OfftheWall87

Beasley fell out of the starting lineup this past season. Not going back in.

  • robb

    As reported yesterday by RKJ92

  • LakeShow

I would think they would have Bledsoe cover some two’s though. He’s better to cover Dwayne Wade and some other two’s while Dragic would more easily cover Chalmers or whomever. Essentially there is no difference between their positions. They are both going to be Shooting PG’s.

  • Otis

    Hmmm, yeah, that’s definitely true.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well yeah, Bledsoe will guard the better player if the difference is not negligible. Just typically, say they are playing a team with equal talent at both positions, Bledsoe will be put on the ball.

  • interlagos

I agree. Clippers need to keep shooting.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Beasley will start he is better than bust ass Wesley Johnson and the Morris twins

  • OfftheWall87

…Beasley’s also a bust. More than Wes actually because he was the number 2 pick and people were seriously talking about the Bulls selecting him over Rose.

  • OfftheWall87

Bucks are about to sign OJ Mayo. So I doubt they’re trying to tank.

  • roscoe

where is Odom going to land?

  • Nathan Shane Long

not quite Beasley is a consider a bust only because Miami rejected him so they could form the “BIG 3″ but Beasley has average 14 PPG which is decent compared to Wesley who averages 8.0 PPG

  • Dagger

To be fair, a team with no serviceable center and an army of shooters just won the last two titles.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it would only be fair if you prefaced that with, “the team with by far the best player on earth”

  • OfftheWall87

They traded him to the Wolves for 2 second round picks, not even a player. He made it very easy for them to trade him away and create cap space. He was garbage in Miami. Decent for one season in Minnesota. Lost his starting job in Phoenix. He played 21 minutes a game for a sorry team. He will go down in history as one of the worst number 2 picks along with guys like Darko Milicic. That’s who he is right now.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Michael Beasley was so bad last season that his win shares were.

    .

    NEGATIVE.

    .

    HE CONTRIBUTED TO NEGATIVE WINS.

    .

You are a flaming moron if you think he’s a good player.

  • Dagger

Hah, true enough, but Chris Paul isn’t a slouch. Surrounding him and Blake with shooters is not the worst approach to winning a title in today’s NBA.

  • Mike Gilbert

I guess when you factor in the fact that they were gonna lose him anyway, it’s a great deal

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Ehh, if you don’t have an isolation scorer and no front court depth I don’t think Paul and Griffin do much more then get you a home court playoff series or two

  • OfftheWall87

Exactly. Might as well get back some guys who can help you and give you something you didn’t have before.

  • Nathan Shane Long

you do realize Miami played him out of postion right? putting him at power forward was a huge mistake and as far as worst second overall pick goes Beasley is better than OKAFOR,M.WILLIAMS,THABEET,TURNER,MILICIC,D.WILLIAMS,

  • Dagger

You’re probably right. They need more but, like you said, they have the MLE. We’ll see.

  • OfftheWall87

They played him at both 3 and 4. He’s 6’10. He’s big enough to play the 4. And either way, saying that he played out of position is about the worst excuse you can give him. Okafor actually has produced a lot more than Beasley has for each team he’s played for. He averaged a double double each of his first 5 seasons. And Evan Turner is a major player for the Sixers and their future plans. He’s 3 years in and hasn’t been traded yet…can’t say the same for Beasley after his first 3 seasons.

  • Nathan Shane Long

im a bobcats fan in north carolina and okafor did nothing for Charlotte but win rookie of the year over howard and turner is pure garbage people said he was the next Brandon Roy

  • OfftheWall87

“Okafor did nothing in Charlotte but win Rookie of the Year over Howard”…read that again and tell me you didn’t mean to type that sentence, please. Because that supports my argument, not yours. People said Beasley was going to be a 20 and 10 guy each season. So if we’re going by what people said, Turner still has a chance to become a solid NBA player. Beasley has been on 3 teams and will likely be moved again. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds himself playing overseas at some point. If anyone is pure garbage, it’s Beasley. His best highlights since he left Kansas State have come from Summer League games.

  • LakeShow

    Meh.

  • dmc14

    pg- dragic
    sg- bledsoe
    sf- butler
    pf- beasley
    c- gortat

  • RunNGun

My bad… Jones in two years.

  • JL

Also gotta evaluate how good doc rivers really is as a coach. Was it just the Big 3 carrying him? Not sure, but we’ll see how much better he is than vinney del negro.

  • Max

Bledsoe should stay a backup imo, he’ll get exposed if he starts.
