Kobe Bryant Says LeBron James on the Lakers in 2014 Not ‘That Big of a Stretch’

LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony are the likely headliners for next summer’s NBA free agent class. Kobe Bryant may not be willing to take a pay cut to help bring one of those guys on board, but when it comes to LeBron, Bryant says it’s not inconceivable that he could join the Los Angeles Lakers. Per Lakers Nation: “Once Kobe retires, James will inevitably be chasing the Black Mamba ring count, so what would entice him to increase Kobe’s? Bryant didn’t seem to think LeBron to the Lakers was that big of a stretch. ‘It’s that argument that goes on forever,’ Kobe said at his basketball camp at UC Santa Barbara. ‘You don’t want to help someone else kind of increase their ring count, but he’s already increased Dwyane’s, so I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch.’ Kobe, of course, said he couldn’t speculate on what LeBron would do in 2014, but it sounds like the rumors that Los Angeles is a serious potential landing spot for LeBron, aren’t all that far off. The Lakers, though, would need to leave plenty of cap space for that to happen, and Kobe at least for now, isn’t prepared to take any dramatic pay cuts. And, LeBron hasn’t given any inclination that he’s even thought about being a free agent in the summer of 2014.”

“You don’t want to help someone else kind of increase their ring count, but he’s already increased Dwyane’s, so I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch.”

At this point, Kobe is more of a liability than an asset when the Lakers chase top-tier free agents.

  • OfftheWall87

    Not going to happen.

  • Anthony

“6″….Jordan’s ring count is the main one that matters….to all of them. Getting 1 more than MJ is their “Holy Grail”.

  • pposse

haha Kobe with the underhanded insult to D Wade.

This whole past year Kobe has been talking so much smack and surprisingly its been pretty funny.

  • FritzLn

indeed. anyone who thinks kobe will retire with 5 rings without expending everything he has left in his knees must be new to basketball. he’ll hang around til he’s 40 no doubt. if for nothing else to get kareem’s record.

  • Dagger

Which is kind of stupid, because rings don’t make the player.

  • Jamelle Fitchett

Robert Horry has more than Jordan. so what does that matter?

  • OfftheWall87

They do when fans talk about the players they’re fans of and try to prove that their guy is better than another guy. But to everyone else who’s smart enough to take into consideration everything in a player’s career, no, they don’t make the player.

  • OfftheWall87

And Bill Russell has more than all of them.

  • shockexchange

How else would Horry Jr win a chip … as the theme from “Jeopardy” plays ad infinitum?

  • spit hot fiyah

yes underhanded insult, but also acknowledging that he needs major help himself

  • Caboose

Cause saying sh!t like this is sure to increase your chances, right?

  • Lloyd

Kobe’s been playing too much 2K.

  • shockexchange

Exactly. Sort of like when Kevin Durant publicly proclaimed his affection for Kerrie Hilson and went on Twitter, Facebook and several blogs asking people to relay her the message. Well, look how that turned out.

  • shockexchange

Dagger finally living up to his nickname.

  • RKJ92

ROFL so Kobe thinks LeBron would leave Dwyane Wade who’s younger, Chris Bosh who’s younger, and both can re-negotiate their contracts, Pat Riley, a pg in Chalmers who he’s meshed with for 3 years, just to team up with an old Kobe, Jim Buss, and cap room loooollll no thx…

  • The Seed

Kobe was taking a shot at Wade on Lebron’s behalf. Wade stated the same thing about Kobe, that he was jealous when he saw Kobe win his 5th ring.

  • Caboose

I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with that fiasco. Can the shock exchange enter story telling mode?

  • shockexchange

Tellin’ what “had happened” and what he’s seen or heard is against the Shock Exchange’s code. He’s prolly said too much already.

  • Caboose

Shame, I’m sure you made a very insightful comment, that I missed cause of my ignorance. Looks like the Caboose will have to wait evermore for the shock exchange’s story while the Jeopardy theme plays ad infinitum.

  • Reallest

Only if he keeps playing inefficiently and hurting his team’s chances to win. I respect the Kobe who got like 14 assists back to back, but dude hurts his team more often than. When Kobe tries to score his team loses, on the shaq squads, it’s been shown that without Shaq the team is mediocre at best (lil above .500) but with the Shaq and without Kobe they did .780 approx but with Both they did .750 ish. dude needs to play more like Lebron…

Also, Lebron easier better than Kobe. Objectively look at all the accomplishments, stats, context (i.e. teams/ management).

  • Yep

Exactly, compare Lebron to Kobe in terms of stats, accomplishments, and context (how they helped their teams, what type of talent they had), historical feats and more objective perspectives to other elements like all-around game, leadership IT IS CLEAR Lebron’s better and has been better than Kobe at his best.

No knock on Kobe, but let’s be real. The only argument people have is 5>2 but don’t factor in objectively how many Kobe really has (including that they did worse as a squad without Shaq, Kobe on “Cav-like” team, Kobe pre-Gasol who was at the time one of the best if not the best PF in the game and is still the Lakers best OVERALL player when given the opportunity (what other PF can put up 20+ 15+ and 10+ pts/boards/asst).

But, for real tho, let’s respect both because they are both tight players; it’s just that one of them is overrated but still top 2 SG of all time. and one of best to ever play.

  • OfftheWall87

Points and rings are the two things that Kobe’s fans here will bring up. They may bring up All-NBA defensive first teams but they’ll forget that he’s been in the league 7 years longer than James and he’s at 5 All-NBA defensive first teams already and will easily get four more selections. No one will talk about what LeBron did with average/below average talent around him compared to Bryant. They’ll forget that 24 came in playing with Shaq while LeBron came in playing with Darius Miles, Ricky Davis and Ilgauskas who was a good player at one point, but never great. They’ll both go down as being top 10 players but if people want to compare them, they need to talk about everything in the proper context. LeBron is the total package. Even at his best, 24 was known as more of a scorer than anything. Great defender at one point. But his best seasons were when he scored the most. LeBron’s past 2 seasons are up there as the best individual seasons a player has had in the history of the league.

  • thetruth

you mean Dwayne Wade who plays OLDER than Kobe…. Chris Bosh that didn’t even exist in the last game of the Finals…. and you think Chalmers and Lebron mesh? lol… more like Chalmers is scared to death of lebron… all lebron and Dwade do is blame chalmers when something goes wrong…. you must be watching a different heat team than I am

  • robb

I’m a big Kobe fan, BIG, but Lebron is unquestionably a better player, and his superiority will only grow every year, regardless of the number of rings he gets.

  • Stackin

You both are right on. But I don’t even think people have an argument when it comes to points because i think efficiency and rate come into play. Lebron still is one of the best scorers in the league when primarily playing as a facilitator. When he wants to score, he puts up crazy numbers. If he wanted to he could lead the league in scoring arguably every year.

Lebron already has reached more scoring milestones faster than Kobe had. People will say that Kobe didn’t play or do that well in his first 2 years while Lebron was given a chance, but Bron STILL produced at historic clip NOT ONLY in points but All Around game.

When factoring in pts you have to look at efficiency man. Think about it.

Way to represent for the logical Laker fans out here.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

not Phil Jackson. or KC Jones.

  • RKJ92

So essentially your saying Dwyane Wade plays older then Kobe, Bosh isn’t still a top pf/c, Chalmers doesn’t have chemistry with LeBron after 3 years? AND your telling me this about a team that just came off from winning a championship title? Ya your right.. guess you know better then me :)

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Thus far, this has been the most reasonable ” Kobe vs …..” thread in Slam’s history.

  • bike

Maybe LA could rent ‘LeBron Rules’ for a year? Is there a Kindle edition?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And told you so. Told you so. Told you so. And you. And you. And you.

RT @SpearsNBAYahoo: Warriors never called Lakers to talk sign & trade for Dwight Howard because they never were told they were a real contender, source told Y!

  • shockexchange

Actually they were written on clay tablets. Word on the street is that The Kang’s people who stole “The Rules” from a location the Shock Exchange would rather not disclose. The balance of power in the L will be changed forever. What has the Shock Exchange wrought?

  • OfftheWall87

D-Wade has taken more punishment with his body because of his style of play. That’s what he plays like. It’s not that he plays like he’s older. He plays like he’s been hurt more than Kobe has…because he has. Plus the burden he carried as Shaq was falling off and then left and before LeBron and Bosh arrived…that also factors in.

  • SwaggyduhDon

Yeah, Kobe has always needed help to win or make noise even. BUT since it’s Kobe, everyone’s is NOT going to look at statistical evidence or even games and then say that Kobe led shaq or Kobe is better than Lebron.

If people want to put Kobe on the pedestal of the greats, then he Needs to be judged like them as well. And when he is, people will realize that Kobe is arguably the best role player/”sidekick” ever to play but nowhere near the level of LeBron, Jordan, or Shaq even. Kobe tho is better than wade tho.
