Lakers Reportedly Eyeing LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony in Summer of 2014

The Lakers, it seems, are going to have a tough season, but the summer of 2014 could be a franchise-changer. Hope you’re ready for another 12 months of free agency rumors/reports. Per ESPN.com: “The Los Angeles Lakers, whose plan to re-sign center Dwight Howard did not pan out this offseason, are poised to rebuild fast by focusing on the two biggest free agents of 2014 — LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, front office sources have told ESPN. … Opinions are split on whether the Lakers can actually land James or Anthony, with one source calling it ‘realistic’ and another saying it was ‘far-fetched at this point.’ Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear they are positioning themselves for a run at one and perhaps even two of the superstars who could become free agents in 2014, by refusing to commit to any contract past this next season, multiple sources have said. Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh also have early termination options on the five-year deals they signed in the summer of 2010. Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Andrew Bogut and Dirk Nowitzki will be unrestricted free agents next summer. James, of course, is the biggest prize. But unlike in 2009 when James’ free agency options the following summer were on his mind, sources have told ESPN that James isn’t even considering his 2014 decision yet. …  Anthony’s plans also remain unclear for next summer, but one source close to the situation told ESPN that it would ‘make sense’ for him to exercise the early termination option on his contract after next season to become a free agent and secure either a four- or five-year extension. Basking in the glow of a second title, James recently completed a Nike camp in Las Vegas and has a promotional tour planned to the Philippines and China. Then he will turn his focus to his wedding, which is planned for September in San Diego.”

I’d love to see Kobe and Carmelo together. The NBA would then issue a new rule using two balls for every Laker game, because they’re the Lakers

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Is this really news tho?

  • RayJr

Last year it was when we already knew that was the plan if Dwight didn’t re-sign. They are just stating the obvious now.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They are set up for them to do go after the marquee free agents no matter what. Lol, they have enough room for 3 Max free agents in 2014 + another $10 mill to spare.

  • JML-G

Lakers are having pipe dreams now after the loss of Dwight and far from bright look at future – zero chance Lebron goes there, very small to none that Melo goes there.. reminds me of Mavs

  • shockexchange

Sorry Lakers fans, the Shock Exchange just learned that Thor, Iron Man and Wonder Woman are not available.

  • thetruth

you really believe there is very small to no chance that Melo goes there? After the Knicks lose AGAIN this year in the playoffs seeing Melo go to the Lakers next year is far from a pipe dream.

  • spit hot fiyah

it is possible, the bigger question is how good are the lakers with kobe at 37 years old (or something like that) and melo, nash and co.

  • bike

Of course they are. They are the freakin Lakers for God’s sake.

  • vINSANITY

Lakers just don’t seem that attractive anymore, don’t know if kobe or dwight did it but it aint good

  • Habeeba Husain

I will cry if that deal goes down.

  • keyon dooIing

    #PageViews

ZERO percent LJ plays for the Lakers while Kobe’s around

  • RipCity

i’d love to see carmelo in la. he needs a good organization around him to win a ring and he’ll never get it in ny thanks to amare

  • Dev

Exactly. I got a feeling they gonna crap out in 2014

  • Dev

It is in the thin sports news days of the summer when at this moment there’s no baseball. basketball, hockey, or football

  • pposse

bet you said the same thing before he joined forces with D Wade and Bosh too

  • Lloyd

Can’t see Lebron leaving Miami, especially if they threepeat this year.

Melo leaving the Knicks seems very plausible. Can’t see them getting out of the first round this year, and if they do, definitely can’t see them getting out of the second. If LA gets all the right pieces surrounding Melo and an aging Kobe, that’s not a bad look. If Pau can regain even some semblance of what he once was, a Pau/Melo combo would be niiiice.

  • Im not carmelo

James is smart in that he’s not going to join a team that has no chance of winning a ring. Melo, on the other hand, has a 50/50 chance to leave NY because NY just shot themselves by signing Bargani. While it might not necessarily be LA, although it is quite possible because it’s a huge franchise, it might be the Mavs, Nuggets, Hawks, etc..NOT THAT IT REALLY MATTERS BECAUSE WHATEVER TEAM HE GOES TO IS NOT GOING TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. MUAHAHAHAHWAHAHAHAWHAWHAHAHWH

  • Marshon

No way. Melo and Lebron doesn’t have that kind of relantionship. Both are in excelent teams right now, especially Lebron with 2 rings and a state with no taxes. Lebron’s dream is win one championship for Cleveland not for LA. Typical summer news when the journalist are bored. With Jim Buss the Lakers are falling and falling.

2014 Roster: Starting: PG: Greivis Vasquez SG: Thabo Sefo SF: Luol Deng PF: Carmelo C: DeMarcus Cousins. Bench: PG: Nash SG: Jamal Crawford: SF: Mike Miller PF and C: any ideas? —- I think this lineup is pretty affordable for LA and will do some damage defensively and offensively to many teams. I dunno if all these guys i mentioned are FA or would sign with LA. Obviously I would only want Cousins if he can control himself lol. Im not a Laker fan, but I would like to see more many balanced teams competing in the playoffs

  • Jay Brodes

i dont see lebron coming to LA. melo is another story..Lala loves la and she is tight with nessa. Melo and the mamba are close. a happy wife is a happy life..goes a long way..i hate tmz news like this but it is what it is! get well soon mamba!

  • TV63

D’Antoni resigned because of Carmelo? What part of Melo can’t stand D’Antoni don’t you get? Hello anyone home in that Laker brain? Not going to happen! Lebron to aging players? Lol He already rode that horse in Cleveland and skipped to South Beach. No chance either of these 2 go to Lakers especially with D’Antoni and “I don’t get along with anyone” Kobe.

  • keyon dooIing

I always knew it was a legitimate chance for him to go to Miami back then. LeBron and his “team” as he calls it (Mav and Rich Paul in particular) don’t like Kobe and Lebron is smart enough to know that Kobe won’t stop shooting 20+ times a night and give him the reins like Dwyane did. It’s just not happening. He doesn’t want to play with Kobe.

  • playa

Lebron- slim to no chance, but Melo??You’re just kidding yourself if you think there’s no chance.

  • Markus437

No, just no to a sequel of The Decision and The Melo-drama

  • LakeShow

What’s the point in your comment.
    It hurt my noggin.

After the Lakers fire D’Antoni (I give it at most 40-50 games), the only roadblock keeping Carmelo from going to LA will be removed. He likes Kobe and wants to play with him.

Lebron, on the other hand, most likely has no interest in playing with Kobe. He won’t be able to phase Kobe out the way he phased out Wade in Miami. The Lakers will be Kobe’s team until Kobe retires. My guess is Lebron either stays in Miami or patches things up with Dan Gilbert and returns to Cleveland.

There is no chance they get either one of ‘em,,,,, Melo is a east coast dude,,, he’s not going there. The town he relates to has him and look ves him, he’s going no where.

So you’d love to see two of biggest black holes in the history of black holes on the court at the same time???

Here’s what the pitch from the Lakers to Lebron & Melo would be: Sign with us in 2014 and make a run at a ring with Kobe/Pau/Nash. Kobe & Pau will be signed for cheap because they want more rings bottom line. Than after we win a ring or not, in the summer of 2015 i’ll bring you Kevin Love, Marc Gasol, and Kyrie Irving. Sound good?

  • RKJ92

Wtf that team would be a sh*t show, are you actually serious? lol

  • RKJ92

Melo, and Kobe dont play defense that team would be worse then the heat now believe me, I’d cry for James if that deal went down…

  • Evan Boland

‘Melo isn’t on an excellent squad.

  • Evan Boland

Um.. How would they have no chance of winning a ring with ‘Bron, Kobe, Pau, Nash and a bunch of young athletic wing players?

  • Evan Boland

Kobe plays D when he feels like it lol

  • Evan Boland

Ain’t either of ‘em. It’s Jim.

  • Evan Boland

It was a joke you moron

  • LakeShow

They aren’t stupid enough to fall for that.

  • Not a Laker Fan

Oh, didn’t have one. It hurt my head while thinking about this too. :/

  • imanueldavid

They wouldn’t be “falling” for anything. That’s what will happen. Sign with us in 2014 & we’ll bring in more talent in 2015 because we’ll have the money and that’s when more talent become available.

  • LakeShow

    Oh… more talent?
    Yeah probably.
K-Love, Gasol, and Irving to go with Bron, Melo, KB and Pau is a little ridiculous though.

  • imanueldavid

Of course it’s ridiculous. But it’s the Lakers. A team that has an obviously long history of spending money. The difference is they’ll actually be WAY WAY WAY under the cap this time around too. Nothing is off the table now.

  • im really not carmelo

those 4 take up all and more of the salary cap. what young athletic wing players will play for no money?

  • aiewngaeowign

yet Kobe said repeatedly he is going to get as much money from his future contracts as possible. he needs to suck his aging ego back into his whatever thing it comes out from. (which can happen, when the state of california becomes an island). The new owners are cheap man, cheap cheap.

  • imanueldavid

I don’t think that’s the case. He merely stated he wasn’t going to concede bargaining power when that time came. But I have no doubts he’ll do the KG/Duncan thing and take less to reload the team for a championship run. Might even take it to another level (as only Kobe could) and take vets minimum for the one year (giving LA even more money to play with). Than because LA still owns his bird rights, they can offer him something like 19.5 mil the following year.

  • RKJ92

Dude should feel like it more often then!

  • Evan Harris

If this even happened, the Lakers would be the cheesiest team in video game history…

  • Evan Harris

One that wants to win a ring lol…

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I dont get it… build a balanced team with developed unity, players buying into a system a mix of stars and TRUE role players… the way teams try to stack-trade for “superstars” these days is more or less like building teams on 2K13??!

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Being a Lakers fan is fast becoming one of those “1st world problems”….

  • Sergio

Lebron will not exchange teams again next year. He suffered a lot from the decision, and do not want to be seen as a talent chaser,

And really, who thinks that Kobe and Melo on the same team would work are nuts.

  • grgeblck

Lebron should just stay in Miami for the rest of the career. But again, NBA players nowadays are hoping all over just to get rings.

  • Evan Boland

… Like, uh, Nick Young and Wesley Johnson? Who singed for minimum deals this year when the Lakers aren’t in title contention..

  • SwaggyduhDon

    ShockExchange…funniest commenter on Slam Realtalk…

Lebron better than Kobe objectively, rationally stated yuh feel me

  • Jerry Alex

Lala would love to go West. and with the Knicks strapped cap wise and what looks like another loss in the playoffs, it can easily happen.

  • grgeblck

Wade sacrificed himself rather than Lebron phased out Wade. Kobe needs to learn that from Wade if he wants to continue winning. Look at Tim Duncan as example. Our mind don’t age, but our body does.

  • Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

He sticks to his display name too much, apparently.

  • bobby

Melo is NEVER going to play for D’Antoni again…..
