Los Angeles Lakers Confirm Dwight Howard Won’t Return

After the news broke that free agent center Dwight Howard had chosen the Houston Rockets, endless reports emerged that the big fella was being indecisive once again. Well, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dwight himself put an end to all of the speculation. GM Mitch Kupchak confirmed that DH won’t be wearing Laker Purple & Gold next season: “We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers. Naturally we’re disappointed. However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great lakers fans will be proud to support. To Dwight, we thank him for his time and consideration, and for his efforts with us last season. We wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his NBA career.’ [...] ‘I’ve decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets. I feel its the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I’m looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best.’”

Well, this is one of the craziest/best off-seasons I can remember. Perfect way to follow a riveting finals.

  • Rockwell

Good! If you don’t like LA, we don’t want you living here anyways! Dwight didn’t have the heart to be next in the long line of Laker greats anyways.

  • RedDragon10

    About Damn Time

  • RayJr

Good riddance. The guy might be the best center in the league at this present time BUT he will forever be remembered as a flake, quitter, and one of the least respected players who has ever played.

  • Marko

F*** the Lakers. And Dwight Howard

  • Jagga

Carmelo better join Kobe next year that would be some great bball and he can attract young stars to come after him when Kobe retires

  • robb

    and you!!!

Who says no to the lakers n 31 million? But Rockets will be blazing next season. 2009 magic with a second superstar? 55 wins minimum 3pt shooting n harden & dwight average about 25fta a night.

  • robb

Good. Let’s move on. I’m sick of this guy and his indecisiveness. Like someone tweeted today “Dwight must be the worst guy to be stuck behind at Yogurtland.” Can you imagine?

This is what happens when “entitled” fans of franchises like the Lakers and Knicks don’t get their way. LOL

  • trent

    About f’ing time!

  • Conor

Kobe didn’t like him… the Gasols didn’t like him… I didn’t like him… but every Laker-affiliate was forced to endure his childish, imbecilic antics.

Thankfully, he and his two post moves are gone. It will be difficult for LA on the block, defensively, but only for a season.

Yea all my friends and fellow Laker fans out here are saying “f*ck D12 we never needed him” lol

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

So I guess Howard is more hated than LeBron now?

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Are you serious? There aren’t enough basketballs in the world for those two on the same damn team.

  • RunNGun

Never needed him but were so excited to have received him from ORLANDO. Sugar plum fairies and delusions of grandeur to the rhyme of not one, not two, not three, not four, not five… :) LOL

  • lex

    Sign bynum !!!!

  • robb

The way I see it Lebron was hated but he was respected. Dwight is hated but I don’t think anybody respects him

  • RunNGun

Are you kidding me, T-RAY? In 2014, the Lakers are getting Melo, LBJ, and Kevin Love to play with Kobe. LOL

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I would have to agree. I think people had more respect for LeBron because he didn’t flirt with teams he just took one hour to pick instead of 2 years.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Lol as a Laker fan I’m salivating at the idea but no way in hell that’s happening

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

    Haha touche

  • grgeblck

Who shall Lakers get in the center position?

  • robb

  • Kiwi

    Steven Adams lol

  • Clos1881

By quitter do you mean a guy that returned sooner than expected from back surgery played all year with a bad back and torn labrum in a system that didn’t compliment being a good big man? Oh ok.

  • JL

Try to do a sign and trade and get Asik back.

  • JL

Ha! Yogurtland. I miss that goodness.

  • JL

LOL. I think there’s a chance to get LBJ. Him and KLove would be a lethal combo with Kobe as a set shooter.

  • Clos1881

He was pretty decisive to me you lakers fans have the bitter b!tch face right now suck it up if I recall Kobe was asking for trades to get out of LA until they have him what he wanted.

  • robb

yeah, Lebron made some mistakes but at least he tried to act like a professional, he didn’t act like a woman choosing shoes

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I thought there was a chance IF he never won in Miami. But dude has back-back regular season MVPs, NBA titles and Finals MVPs. He’s not leaving now.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

To be fair today’s confusion is in large part due to Chris Broussard. His sources were waaaaay off until Stephen A talked to D12 personally.

  • robb

he was pretty decisive to you? where have you been the past 2 years?

  • robb

today’s confusion yes, but this started back when he was still in Orlando. By the time he signed with LA I was already tired of this guy.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Oh without a doubt. I’ve been annoyed for a while and today was just the dagger for me.

  • B!

But still won’t make it post the first round. Dwight’s gonna be chasing a ring like Barkley & Malone & end up with their same fate.

  • RayJr

Least respected. No one is ever going to take him seriously again and he will always be remembered for his indecisiveness.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I’m not so sure. Winning cures all just look at LBJ. Sure people still hate him (idk why) but he gets way more respect then he did in 2010/2011.

  • http://www.netstakeover.com/ JetSkiJohnson

    Houston Rockets 2014 champions

  • RayJr

By quitter I mean someone who quit on the Lakers and Magic. We all knew he was going to Houston. He is a quitter because he quit in his last game with LA. Dwight came back and played hurt yeah, but he quit and ran away from adversity once again. Ur comment has no justification to mine. Ur comment is saying that Dwight is tough and doesn’t mean he is not a quitter so try again.

  • RayJr

He has to win and he’s had 2 “Decision” moments. Lebron led his team to 3 Finals and a 2peat. If Dwight wins even one ship he will still be 2nd fiddle bc Houston is Hardens team.

  • roscoe

GoldenSpoon is much better or SprinklesCupcakes.

  • roscoe

I’m in Cali & everyone is stoked.

  • Drig

As a Lakers fan, I’m disappointed. I wish the best for him. I also don’t regret what has happened so far. Judging from Jim Buss’s actions, he would’ve given Bynum an extension if he was on the team. Atleast we got a decent year from Dwight.

This is gonna be an interesting period for the Lakers organization. Not just the team. The idea of a superstar player leaving is a foreign concept to the organization. Jim Buss and Mike D’Antoni better improve their sales pitches for next season because this season is done.

LAL has no bench. No draft picks. No Kobe for first half of the season. If the Lakers picks are protected, time to bottom out, get some intriguing talents in the ’14 draft and start over.

LAL is gonna be back. It might take longer than 3 years but THE.LAKERS.WILL.BE.BACK.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Is it really? People said the same thing about Bron until he won Finals MVP and then won it again. If Howard can win Finals MVP IF they make the finals it’ll be his team.

  • roscoe

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Those are the fake fans who were also stoked when we got him. I’m not paying them any attention because their feelings waffle more than Dwight does.

  • roscoe

    “a superstar player leaving”

    don’t you mean “a mental midget living”…

no offense intended… just calling it how it is.

  • roscoe

HOU needs to trade Lin immediately…

Lin’s game starts and finishes in the paint which will not mesh with dh12.

dh12 signed w/ HOU bc they guaranteed him post touches…

this ain’t going to work. jHarden is a slasher… and yes ik he can shoot…

but dh12 needs the SVG touch and offense… HOU doesn’t have it.

HOU has young good pieces, but it doesn’t fit dh12 as well as he thinks.

  • roscoe

    i approve of your message.

  • pposse

the media will find a way to magnify the whole harden dwight dynamic. Dwight hasn’t proven he can play well with other superstars yet, he has a lot to prove and still has the brain a size of a dry raisin at his disposal. Maybe he can make this work with his assets…doubt it tho..highly doubt it. And potentially the penut sized brain Josh Smith might join the fray haha this ought to be an interesting team in Houston.

  • Drig

lol. We’ve gotten used to Kobe and his level of toughness.

The only thing I feel angry with, in hindsight, is how he played his last game as a Laker and him not even considering giving the big 4 another try because they simply weren’t healthy last season.

D’Antoni should’ve talked more. Dwight should’ve shown more interest in the Lakers’ pitch. Jim Buss should’ve just shut up and hired Phil or forced Mitch to look at sign and trade options.

  • Drig

1 year rental for MLE? Sure.

How ironic would it be if Kobe-Pau-Bynum would again be the Lakers frontcout after last season lol.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I’m interested to see what happens in Houston. I think if he’s healthy he will flourish with Harden in a pick&roll system similar to the one in Orlando. Except this time, unlike in Orlando, he will have a reliable 2 guard who can create for himself and give you 25-30 points per game.

  • roscoe

imagine how the ORL owner’s family feels…

    dh12 gave the man a <3 attack.

D’Antoni suck for the Lakers. He’s gonna be on the chopping block when they’re below .500. So then Karl/Hollins will take over.

I like Asik as he was improving and was making strides. Its gonna suck to see him go yet wherever he lands they will get a productive centre who works hard and will improve.

  • fruizm

Why didnt you say that was your own quote?? You couldve have all the glory!

  • Lloyd

This post-season he has no reason to be hated. He took his time, made the decision that he thinks puts him in the best position to win, and pulled the trigger, informing his team promptly. What part struck you as indecisive?

  • Lloyd

Dwight already tried the Malone route. Went to L.A. and the team disappointed on all accounts. Danny Gilberting right now, as long as Dwight is in the league, L.A. isn’t making the finals, let alone winning a chip.

  • Lloyd

Oh Dwight didn’t inform his team of his choice to leave them and opted to hold an hour long TV special to announce it instead? Dude did nothing wrong this off season.

  • Lloyd

Definitely longer than 3 years, but finally a Lakers fan that seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. Well done sir.

  • B!

2009 would like a word with you.

  • pposse

yeah this was definately the most fitting place for him…well actually if he stayed on the lakers and the offense was catered to two big men, staying in LA would have been the better choice..financially and for winning, thats not the case so Houston it is. James Harden was the leader of that team, just will be interesting to see if DH becomes the leader now or falls in line behind Harden

  • Lloyd

Can’t bro too busy living in 2013. What would a 2009 finals reference do here anyway? That Lakers team is long gone and now they’re just old and injury prone with a bad coaching system, and this Rockets team looks way better than that Magic squad. Lakers fans going to have to live in the past to feel like their team is good so enjoy the delusions bud. It’s all you have left.

    He’s a pure Rocket him !!

  • B!

That & legacy. The Rockets haven’t won a title or even made it to the conference Finals this millennia. The most they’ll do is get TO the 2nd round. Dwight is still Barkley & Malone bound, ‘chip chasing.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I don’t think he’ll have to worry about falling in line and playing second fiddle to Harden. It’ll be a dynamic 1-2 punch with the focus being on Howard.

  • Drig

I wouldn’t totally count out the possibility of Mitch swinging a trade that’ll net us a franchise centerpiece within the next 3 years. Once that piece is in place, the rest of the stuff can be done quickly.

Hell, the Lakers can even take Rockets’ method of stockpiling cheap talent and trading for a superstar player if the opportunity arises.

Realistically, I don’t think we’ll TRULY be able to move on till Kobe does. It’s the price we most probably will have to pay for the greatness he’s provided us with the last decade and a half.

Thanks for the compliments. Straight back at you since you realize this process won’t be easy.

I’ve seen a few entitled fans proclaiming LAL is gonna get LeBron next year to team up with Kobe simply because the Lakers want that to happen. SMDH at them lol.

  • pposse

last time a super team was formed a la the Miami Heat the whole first year the media tried to make it into a “whose team is it” debate. My feeling is that history will repeat itself. The difference, both Wade and Lebron are veterans and didn’t let all the talk bother them..can’t say the same for Dwight. He’s shown over the past two years that he’s not the best at handling critisicm, we’ll see what happens…just don’t see these Rockets handling the situation with the same type of maturity.

  • KB

I’m one of the biggest Laker fans you’ll find, and I’ll always stick with them, but I’m not mad at Dwight at all. This is his job and he chose the team that he feels is the best situation. Nothing wrong with that at all.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

WOW, Josh Smith just signed with the Pistons!

Totally unrelated but I had to piggy back off your top comment. Sorry, robb.

  • Lloyd

Legacy= living in the past. Tell me how warm the C’s legacy is going to keep their fans at night as they tank this season. Nostalgia doesn’t matter in sports.

That’s because only 5 teams have won chips this millenia. Doesn’t change the fact that the Lakers are going to be mediocre at best for the near future, and Houston is going to be a lot better than them. It’s ok, I know Laker fans are going to be bitter for awhile though. Condolences.

  • Lloyd

The Lakers aren’t going to have an elite team for a long time. There are too many strong, established teams in the West. They used to have the pull to get free agents based on the allure of championship potential, but that just isn’t the case anymore. Now, the only selling point is the bright lights of Hollywood. And I don’t see any trade pieces that teams would want at this point, save maybe Pau.

Ridiculous. That’s why I maintain that Lakers fans are delusional on the whole. Get ready for a huge rough patch of disappointing seasons bud.

  • B!

    LOL! We’ll see.

  • Conor

When I saw LA play in Toronto, Howard was practicing corner threes before the game. He is truly mentally impotent. I was forced to root for him since he was a Laker, but now that he’s gone, I’ll just go back to reality/the way I used to think of him: poorly. Howard possesses two post moves in his arsenal.

He has chosen to go to a younger team that is better at shooting threes than the Lakers were this past season, who has an inferior version of Kobe in James Harden, & has no other post player aside from Howard. Next summer, no matter what happens this season, will make Howard look like a fool for leaving.

  • Evan Boland

  • Lloyd

    Good insight.

  • roscoe

um… do ppl that were LAC fans b4 they got good (1st round exit or 2nd round, i can’t remember?) qualify as legit fans or some type of Disneyland fairy tale fan.

i mean i like Disneyland as much as the rest, but at some point you stop cheering for Peter Pan, right?

if u do keep cheering for Pan after a certain age you may need some help, right?

  • Nathan

As a Laker fan, I was upset with Dwight frequently. But his decision was his. Now the Lakers can rebuild with cap room and Pau can play center in D’Antoni’s offense where his talents at passing will make him very useful. Hopefully Nash can have a better season and Kobe can come back. Luckily the Achilles’ graft is something that makes your tendon stronger than before. I honestly hope we suck all year and get the number 1 pick. Because Andrew Wiggins is gonna be 10x the player Dwight was and I say that with respect. Dwight doesn’t want to win. He wants to be loved. You don’t get love in LA unless you get a ring. It’s a lot like a religious girl that way.

  • King David

    just like that bum Lebron……

  • Basketball Coach

    the Pride, still?

  • Sardo Numspa

@LAKESHOW… where you at wit this? I know u were on board knowing that Howard was indecisive but I’m curious how u feel LAL is going to reshape themselves this year. As u know I’m a Clipp fan and I like the off-season moves we’ve done (Reddick, Dudley, re-sign Barnes, Hollins) but losing Bledsoe is tough, IMO he’s candidate for most improved this year, dude can be a lock down full court press defender to opposition pg’s.
Anyhoo, back to LAL. Was it Kobe’s spiel that ousted Howard? D’antoni’s system? Nash’s age??
I’m curious because yr one of the more eloquent Laker fans, expression wise. So, let me have it …

  • Sardo Numspa

“He was pretty decisive to me”…. ??????
    “Insert cave analogy”

  • Sardo Numspa

Barkley and Malone were stifled by Jordan. Who can stop Howard at the rim? Lebron??? I posit Howard on just about any tier team can beat the Heat (as they stand today)

  • Sardo Numspa

Agreed. Not one of my friends respect him anymore… there are Howard jersey in the local op shop.

  • Sardo Numspa

    and yr mother’s brother’s lover…

  • Sardo Numspa

Disagree. McHale was using what he had up until the Howard acquisition. McHale is arguably the best big footwork wise to ever play the game, one of at least. I’m sure he knows how to get the bigs involved. Previously with the Rockets with Asik he is sound in many areas but the o doesn’t go through him, it went through Harden. Now, it will have multiple options. Ex players are the best coaches given the right circumstance (Doc Rivers, Phil Jackson). To complete Howard you need, 1. a driving kick pg, check.
    2. You need a slasher/spotter 2,check.
    3. You need a spot up corner guy, check.
    4. A BIG 4, check, 9like the twin towers of SAS days)
With an okay bench to give a few mins here and there, because they are all young guys *(save Asik)… Bang. You can’t tell me the Heat have any chance against that…

  • B!

    LOL. We’ll see.

  • ron

He should have joined the Heats !

  • DaRealness

Bruh, you know the Lakers are gonna get stacked soon with sick free agents and real high lottery pick…that’s how NBA works b/c a lot of laker fans/kobe fans…

Dawg, Lebron better than Kobe yanawmean. There is NO way someone can argue Lebron aint objectively. You could go stat check, accomplishment check, whatever check… only argument is 5>2 but they don’t factor in 2 to 2 finals MVP (maybe should’ve been 1 because that Game 7 Gasol and Artest and Gasol aka the most unappreciated player in a while/ most skilled big man during that time). Pippen got 6 but ain’t no 1 talking about Pippen. I like Kobe dawg, real talk, boy cold…but better than Lebron? One of the greatest (top 10?) all time? c’mon dawwwwg…

When I compare players, I don’t talk about non-basketball stuff…simply their game/objective measures…their personal lives are their own responsibilities and therefore should NOT carry weight when discussing basketbll for doing so is highly offensive and slanderous to the players themselves, so please refrain from comments such as arrogance, rapist, decision because let’s all look at our mistakes before judging others, realtalk realspit.

But, Everybuddy be like Miami CHEAT Refs this and that… Lebron flops (which is lame) but dude legit gets hacked everytime he drives (aka shaq treatment). The LAKERS SERIES HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE RIGGED (Tim Donaghy) and they got into the PLAYOFFS BECAUSE OF THAT RIGGED GAME AGAISNT GOLDEN STATE WHERE THEY SHOT 50 FT to 16 (people will say GSW is jumpshooting team and don’t get calls… Last i checked GSW avg. 22ish fta a game and LAL 22ish)…

Last thing, these are observations. Ultimately, let’s all just enjoy the basketball and appreciate the players who have been blessed with their abilities. ya feel me

  • Dev

They prolly wont even make it past OKC in the playoffs since Perkins is his Kryptonite

  • LakeShow

    My thoughts:

Overall I still don’t know if I wanted Dwight to sign… I really, really don’t.

I think Howard left because of the intensity in LA, the laid back-ness of Houston, and the thought of playing with fun and funny young guys rather than serious old Vets.

His skills are very nice, but he’s such a tool. I think he is very unintelligent (unlike Kobe, Pau, Nash) so he really wasn’t a great fit with the current Lakers on many levels.

I’m thrilled to have Pau back in a more featured role as he deserves. He should be the 2nd option and should be on the post twice as much as last season. I like the idea of having MWP play the 4 and find some youthful, defensive signings for the wings.

The Lakers are no longer a premier squad.

The Clippers are the best team in LA.

We have to wait and watch next season to see who the best player in LA is…

The Clippers are looking great. I LOVE their signings.

JJ Reddick is under rated. Jared Dudley is also. Ryan Hollins is a very nice back up Center. And they just grabbed Darren Collison I hear… Wow.

I think the Clippers are contenders under the right conditions.
