Monta Ellis Considering Hawks, Kings, Mavericks and Bobcats

Free agent guard Monta Ellis has reportedly whittled his list of potential suitors down to four: Atlanta Hawks, Sacramento Kings (who may be the front-runners at this point), Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Bobcats. Word is that Ellis hopes to make a decision within the next 36-48 hours. Per NBA.com: “Milwaukee Bucks free agent guard Monta Ellis is currently deciding between offers from the Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks, according to a league source. Ellis is intrigued by the Kings, according to the source. Sacramento will have to move one of its existing guards first, however, to be able to get Ellis, a career 19-point per game scorer and one of the last major free agents left on the market that hasn’t yet agreed to terms with a new or current team. Sacramento agreed to acquire Bucks forward Luc Mbah a Moute Tuesday for two future second-round picks, according to league sources. It’s not clear if getting Mbah a Moute, who is scheduled to make $4.58 million next season, would prohibit the Kings from being able to make a run at Ellis. The Mavericks would almost certainly have to find a trade partner for forward Shawn Marion and his expiring $9.3 million contract to be able to create enough cap room to sign Ellis. Dallas agreed last week on a four-year, $29 million deal for free agent point guard Jose Calderon, and also have deals for veteran Devin Harris and Israeli point guard Gal Mekel. But the Mavericks need a two guard. [...] The 27-year-old Ellis averaged 19.2 points per game last season for the Bucks, who were the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference and were swept by the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs. After agreeing to sign guard O.J. Mayo when the NBA moratorium on contract signings ends Wednesday, the Bucks are also likely to lose their other starting guard from last season, restricted free agent Brandon Jennings.”

Monta Ellis considering money, money, money and money.

He obviously doesn’t want to be a 6th man for a contender who can afford him. Shame but hey get your money man.

  • AiRsMiTh

He should go to the Kings, or maybe the Mavs. Probably the two best options in terms of personnel, and potential to become contenders. I really think Sac might be the best choice unless he just wants money (I think not). Plus he’ll be close to the Bay.

  • robb

    He also fired his agent

  • Roy Blumenfeld

He’s in danger of Sprewell-ing himself by asking for too much money. He’s extremely talented, but he is also undersized and plays awful defense.

Something the article might have included: he fired his agent because he wasn’t happy with the offers coming in (per ESPN). His remaining suitors apparently don’t have the cap space to give him the offer he thinks he deserves, so he’s hoping his new agent – Fegan I believe – can negotiate a sign and trade.

I think I wrote here a few weeks back that Bynum, JR Smith and Ellis would all be in for a rude awakening this summer. Offers to Ellis in particular are limited not only by the new CBA, but by the league-wide rise of the advanced statistics crowd. Inefficient, one-dimensional chuckers like Ellis have never been less valued, and unfortunately for him his contract will probably reflect that new reality.

Let’s see what his contract will be like after opting out of $11 million…

I don’t want him for the hornets/bobcats that would make us to good for what we’re trying to accomplish.

lol that explains the Cody Zeller pick

I heard that Ellis fired his agent too. My guess is that Ellis is looking for at least $12M over 2-3 yrs and I don`t think any of these suitors have that much cap space available or think that he`s deserving of that much money. Dallas and especially Atlanta are the 2 teams with the greatest need for a scoring guard right now, and I think both need/want to acquire Ellis via trade (Dallas wants to trade Marion, Atlanta wants to deal Teague).

Like you said the new CBA, luxury tax penalties and crowd of people who are obsessed with “advanced statistics” have lessened his value by over analyzing his game. The fact is Ellis is one of the few “small guards” who was drafted out of high school and has found success in the nba unlike guys named Telfair and Livingston. Screw the “advanced statistics”. The guy can play. Is he worth $12M? Not in my opinion. I think he`s worth around $9M based on the new CBA but I could see him getting $10M.

IMO Ellis needs to play for a good coach who is going to get the most out of him offensively and defensively. Defense and perimeter shooting are his greatest weaknesses. It`s not impossible to improve these aspects of his game which is still kind of raw. His game just needs some polishing up.

He`s had some good seasons in the nba. 2007-08, he played 81 games
(started 72), averaged 20.2 points, 3.9 assists, 5.0 rebounds and
shot 53.1% with Golden State. For 3 other years he shot over 45%
    from the field (47.5% in 2006-07, 45.1% in 2008-09, and 45.1% in
    2010-11). The talent is there.

The Kings. The F*cking Kings. How many ball dominant, shoot-first, undersized, soft on defense guards do they need?

Are you a scout? Were you at the Kevin Durant Nike event in DC last month (end of June 2013)? Did you come to the rescue of a lady being harrassed by an angry homeless man?
If so, I’d really like to talk with you again (if you’re interested). I’m not sure how to find you, so I’m hoping you will read this.
You can email me at Karrynib at aol.
I will only respond to someone who can correctly answer the following questions:
    1. Why was the homeless man angry with me?
    2. What was the homeless man wearing?
    3. What type of establishment was I standing in front of when this incident occurred (restaurant, bar, shoe store, other)?
Please note: I’m looking for one specific man, not just any scout. (He just happened to be one.)
If any of you know someone who was there and think they might be the man I’m looking for, please feel free to pass this on to them.
I hope you don’t mind me posting this here …
