Monta Ellis to Sign With the Dallas Mavericks

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Monta Ellis’s winding, at times contentious free agency has reportedly come to an end.

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to sign the explosive guard to a three-year deal that could be worth up to $30 million:

Sources said that the Mavericks and Ellis have agreed to terms on a three-year deal that — depending on where Dallas’ ends up in terms of salary-cap space as it works on a number of deals — could rise to as high as $30 million.

The deal, at the minimum, will be in the $25 million range, sources said. Ellis joins point guard Jose Calderon and former Mavericks guard Devin Harris as free-agent signees in Dallas’ overhauled backcourt.

According to the report, the Mavs continue to negotiate with free agent center Samuel Dalembert.

Dallas whiffed on Dwight Howard, their biggest target this summer, and shied away from Andrew Bynum (who ended up in Cleveland.) They turned their focus instead on guard play. Monta Ellis was the biggest name left on the free agent board.

After opting out of his deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, Ellis brings career averages of 19.4 points and 4.7 assists to Texas.

Thought they should try to trade Dirk so that he can try to get another championship before he retires. Carlisle may have enough of a positive effect on Monta where the Mavs can challenge for the 8th spot in the West.

*whispers* “Calderon, Dalembert, Ellis….shhhh, kids can you hear it? That soft whimper? Yes…that’s what a crying German sounds like..”

funny how Bucks be trading players without actual trades – they got Mayo, Mavs got Ellis; they will prolly get Teague, Hawks will prolly sign Jennings

  • RunNGun

One SG who thinks he’s a PG out. Another SG who thinks he’s a PG in!

I`m not sure if the Hawks will sign Jennings. He is asking $12M a yr and I heard the Bobcats are shopping their SG Gerald Henderson around who only has 1 yr left on his contract.

If I was the Hawks, I would look for a sign-and-trade to bring in a starting guard not named Brandon Jennings. Imo there are not anymore good free agent guards left on the market who played in 2012-13 including Jennings. The Hawks need to be creative. They should look to acquire a starting guard via trade and sign 1-2 other free agent guards.

Cuban needs to accept that it’s over, it’s time to hit the reset button and trade Dirk. I would look into a asik/picks deal.

Congratulations of getting enough talent to get to first round of playoffs

  • spit hot fiyah

he got his money after all, a few million less than he turned from the bucks, but still. i thought he would get less

I love how active the Mavs are every off-season. Jose Calderon, Devin Harris, Monta Ellis, and Sam Dalembert are all solid. Granted, they aren’t going to win any more championships, but they should at least make it the playoffs this year.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Cuban blew up a championship team the year after they won in hopes of signing Dwight and Deron. The entire time, he confidently assured the media and fans that the summer of 2013 would be the time that Dallas would reload and once again be contenders.

What does he have to show for it? Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalambert, and Monta Ellis. Slow clap…

Say Hello to your 2014 NBA champions, mark Cuban and the Dallas mavericks.

  • The Seed

After Dirk one a ring with Tyson and JJ and Terry leading the way. Cuban thought Dirk could lead them back. Dirk needs to be traded for something. Mavs could have gotten Howard for Dirk or Josh Smith for Dirk. Cuban should know better by now, he is on Shark Tank and understands that with Businesses you have to look to the future. Cuban should have kept the team in tack. To sign Monta Ellis is showing the next years he is signed the Mavs will be awful.

  • hushabomb

How about the Hawks get Henderson. He has done well there with MJ teaching him offensive tactics. And on the Hawks he’d be a primary option

Ellis is a really talented scorer, and Carlisle will design plays to improve his efficiency. If Dirk retains the form he showed in the second half of last season, he’ll also have lots of space in which to work.

But wow: Cuban just invested as much as $17 million/year, for three years, in what will probably be the worst defensive starting back court in the league. The Mavs will be decent, probably a playoff team, but they won’t be contenders for a long time.

  • RKJ92

I see Ellis as a Devin Harris like player for the Mavs like how they used Harris in 05-06 but unfortunately I still don’t think Ellis is a great asset to the team at 10 million — 7-8 million is more his range.

That`s what I was hinting towards – Atlanta picking up Henderson via trade. Jennings isn`t worth the risk.

  • Mike Gilbert

to be fair, I think Ellis can be better than Jason Terry

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Definitely. It’s losing Tyson Chandler and then replacing him with Samuel Dalembert that’s the real backbreaker.

  • grgeblck

    Trading a franchise player doesn’t feel right…

  • Rogerdodger

    Shut up niqqa

  • Mike Gilbert

maybe they can somehow manage to get Asik

  • Zabbah

I’m surprised how Dalembert’s basketball I.Q. has pretty much stayed the same as when he entered the league.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

I grew up in Montreal and actually played against Dalembert on numerous occassions. You’re absolutely right, his decision making is questionable at best.

What kills me is that he has the timing, length, and athletic ability to be a much more refined “Birdman” type of player, but for some reason, he always felt he was more skilled than he really was. So instead of being that “energy guy” that could change the game with hustle, he would settle for jumpers and spend way too much time complaining to refs.

Nice guy, though, and props to him for accomishing all that he has.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Asic would be an excellent pick up for them.

just as Joe explained I am alarmed that anybody can profit $7290 in a few weeks on the computer. did you see this link www.KEP2.com

  • Saleem Rainman

They challenged for an 8th spot in the west this year until the final week, and that with Dirk missing half the year and not being Dirk for 3 quarters of the year

  • Saleem Rainman

    he’s better than a harris circa 05-06…

  • RKJ92

No sh*t, i’m saying I see him playing a Devin Harris type of role for Dallas — I never once said anything about who’s better.

  • initbruv

How drunk were you when you wrote this?

  • Saleem Rainman

well considering how much worse this dallas team is then the dallas team of 06, the’ll need him in a role a lot bigger than a devin harris type. so that still didnt make a whole lotta sense to me lol

  • RKJ92

Because your f*cking retarded.. I have already said many times before, Ellis is not a star caliber player at this point, and I don’t know why Dallas even signed him to begin with he’s just a better version of what Devin Harris was back then (fast, volume scorer, with capable court vision, and bad defense) now seriously hop off my dick and stop changing the context of what I’m saying.

  • shutup

    Wow, that escalated fast….

  • RKJ92
