Boston Celtics Trade Fab Melo to Memphis Grizzlies for Donte Greene

A trade between Boston and Memphis was completed today — the Celtics sent Fab Melo and cash considerations to the Grizz for Donte Greene. From the press release: “Greene, a 6’11” forward, has appeared in 253 games in his five year career averaging 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game. He signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on April 17, 2013 but did not appear in any games for the Grizzlies during the 2012-13 season or the 2013 postseason. He was originally drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 28th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft out of Syracuse but spent the first four seasons of his NBA career with the Sacramento Kings. Melo, a 7’0” center, appeared in six games for the Celtics this past season averaging 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds in 6.0 minutes per game. He also appeared in 33 games for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League and averaged 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and a league-high 3.1 blocks in 26.2 minutes per game. Melo was named to the D-League All-Defensive First Team and D-League All-Rookie First Team for his play during the 2012-13 season.”

The Celtics had to trade a big, they already had a glut, with Bass, Olynyk, Melo, Sullinger, Faverani, Humpries etc, but I don’t know why they acquired Greene. I wonder what the mood is when you’re a player, ahead of a season where every man and his dog knows you’re going to be terrible. Seasons like this are a good opportunity for a player to step up and make a name for themselves though.

    Donte Greene is 6’11″??

  • dyop

    holy sh*t! a trade! oh..

  • spit hot fiyah

measured at 6’8 and a quarter without shoes when he got drafted

  • RKJ92

He’s not really 6’11, he’s one of those players who’s height has been exaggerated, and it stuck.

  • RKJ92

Bingo. I’d say he’s about 6’9 now tops.

This was a terrible trade for Boston.. seems like they could have got SOMETHING back for Fab, maybe even a 2nd round pick, but Donte Green? ouch..

Olynyk is the man, if Sullinger gets healthy they might turn out to be a nice front court in a few yeras.

    I think he’s a legit 6’10 with shoes.

Nah he supposedly grew after his rookie year. When I get back to my computer I’ll see if I can find the reports that the Kings were thinking about playing him at the 4 because he grew

He’s probably 6’10 in most shoes. Dude supposedly grew after his rookie year

  • Max

    YESS!!!

  • Chris

They’ll most likely cut Donte to get under the tax line anyways.

  • RKJ92

Ahhh kk I knew he grew, but I only thought it was like an inch, didn’t think it was almost 3 inches; because I remember reading some article a few months ago about a fully compiled list of NBA players heights that got embellished by the league with a picture of Kevin Love headlining it of course lol.

Donte may not be a favorite on this thread but I always enjoyed him in Sacramento. Can shoot the three a little bit and was one of the few players who could throw down a nasty dunk from time to time. Great character guy and community member.

  • AlbertBarr

Nevermind. Just looked at his 3p% and it is horrid. Always seemed like he was shooting them alright from watching.

  • IDK

When I first read this headline I thought: “What a dumb move by Memphis! They need shooters!” I thought Donte Green was a solid shooter but I guess he isn’t who I thought he was. I’m not sure how he got that reputation in my head?

they will release Greene so they can avoid the luxury tax. Might then sign Shavlik Randolph to the Veteran minimum, or they might wait and see Who else becomes available. Seems like they could have done something with those two picks last year (Melo and Joseph) to move a little higher up in the draft and gotten a better player, but it’s all pointless. The team is going to see how they look with Humps, Favrani and a little of Olynyk at Center. Waiting in the wings will be Iverson… who is a more athletic version of Greg Stiemsma, and deserves to take Melos spot on D League, and not in Tuyrkey.
