Brandon Jennings Not Guaranteed Starting Job in Detroit

While everyone laughed off Chauncey Billups’ claim that he should be the starting point guard for the Detroit Pistons, it turns out that the matter isn’t so laughable. At least, not to Brandon Jennings. There are guarantees about who will start at the point for the Pistons next season. Per MLive: “While Jennings is as close to a lock as there is to open the season running the Pistons offense, the team does have four point guards on the roster with Chauncey Billups, Will Bynum and rookie Peyton Siva also under contract. And all of them would like to be the starter, too. In fact, when Billups signed in Detroit, he said he was returning to the Pistons to be their starting point guard. ‘So did Will Bynum, so did Peyton Siva, so did Brandon Jennings. They all told me that when they signed,’ president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said with a laugh. ‘I was like, ‘Yeah, you are. You right, bro. I said that to all of them. ‘You right, bro.’ So what’s the truth? That decision will be up to new coach Maurice Cheeks and he hasn’t committed to anyone yet, according to Dumars. ‘I don’t know yet,’ Dumars said Tuesday after introducing Jennings in a news conference at The Palace. ‘I can tell you what Mo has told every guy from Chauncey to Brandon to every guy. He said, ‘Look, come in and earn it. I’m going to give it to whoever earns it.’ He said that to every single guy. He said, ‘Joe I’m not going to put myself in a trick box where I’m committing myself to something and it doesn’t play out.’ So, he’s kept it wide open. He said, ‘Let’s see what happens.’ That’s exactly what he said. That’s exactly how it’s going to be.’ Dumars also said no decision has been made as to who will be the starter at shooting guard.”

This is like what they do in high school for these guys to come and earn the starting spot. Also, Detroit clearly has way too many point guards.

it’s a nice thing to say before training camp starts

    1. Billups is not good enough to be a starting pg in the league anymore. He’s my guy but is a little too over the hill. I hope he throws out his ego and becomes a vet leader to the guys unlike what damn rip hamilton did. Don’t be rip hamilton, Chauncey.

    2. Will bynum is better as a sparkplug off of the bench. He does have some nice chemistry with drummond though so maybe drummond can stay in the game when will plays to give monroe/smith some time at pf/c.

    3. I like what siva brings but he’ll probably be the odd man out. Hopefully, he can show some things to coach in practice.

Unless jennings trips off his back foot in training camp or if mo cheeks gets intimidated to the point of starting chauncey, jennings should start. I like competition though… It will bring out the best in brandon to truly change his game to being more of a passer/playmaker like he said in the presser.

so much for his claims that he’ll change his game and turn detroit into lob city.

Billups really needs to fall back and mentor these guys and realize his time in the league as a starter is over.

  • patrick

detroit’s gm sucks? 4 pg’s? too many imo

  • Rhys Pieces Davies

Brandon Jennings shots to much makes the offence suck they need a real point guard who going to avg 8 assist per game etc a real point guard

  • RKJ92

    Thank you!!

  • LakeShow

Jennings was 1 assist away from that in Wisconsin last season…

  • Busta213

To be fair, they have 1 pg too many, and Billups will probably be hurt by Xmas

  • The Philosopher

Billups is just talking. He knows what time it is.
    In my opinion.

And, if Jennings doesn’t beat out theses guards, (which, I think he will) he is a fraud.

  • The Philosopher

Also, expect a career year from Jennings, this season.

  • The Philosopher

They will probably do something with one of them.

Idk man, I think he still thinks he’s Mr. Big Shot.

If I were to start him, I would run him at the 2. Let him spot up. Bring the ball up once in a while.
He’s always been a combo, anyway.
But yeah, he probably does still think he’s Mr. Big Shot. Lol.

far as i can tell, Chauncey is being groomed to take over a coaching gig. idk which one yet, we’ll see how Jason Kidd does in Brooklyn.

  • ATL dynamite

Everybody is telling Andre Miller to do the same, yet he has been doing just fine. Don’t count Billups out yet.

  • tk

He left the clippers bcuz he didnt want to play the two but i agree that he needs to accept his role player role

  • Point god

True point gods make their teammates better whether its challenging them for the starting spot or winning It and letting everyone know who you are! 3 good candidates at the palace. Let the game begin as the egos get swallowed. Scrapping to eat!
