Lakers Assistant Kurt Rambis Not Sure Team Can Play At a Fast Pace

The Lakers, sans Dwight Howard, will be a little less focused on dumping the ball into the post in 2013-14 than they were in ’12-13, but according to Assistant Coach Kurt Rambis, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be playing any faster. Rambis told the LA Times a little about what he expects from the team during the upcoming season: “Lakers assistant coach Kurt Rambis hopes to help improve the team’s defense, but he also had some thoughts to share on the offense. ‘The [Lakers] still have big people and I think you have to take advantage of the big people,’ said Rambis in a phone interview with The Times on Thursday. ‘You can’t ignore them because they are an asset to your offense.’ Coach Mike D’Antoni prefers a fast-paced offense but Rambis cautions that the coaching staff still needs to evaluate the players during camp, especially from a health perspective. Kobe Bryant is recovering from a torn Achilles’ tendon. Steve Nash is almost done recovering from hip, hamstring and back injuries that bothered him late in the season. Gasol still hasn’t been cleared completely from knee procedures to help alleviate tendinosis. ‘In order to run, you need a push guard. That’s Steve Nash,’ said Rambis. ‘It remains to be seen whether he’s coming back from his injuries, and continues to [push] at an elite fast-break pace.’ … ‘You need guys that can really get out and fill the wings because that pushes the defense down,’ said Rambis. ‘That’s not necessarily the way that you would look at this team and describe them.  You might say that with Nick Young, but it’s not necessarily Kobe’s forte nor was it Metta World Peace’s forte last year.’”

If they have Gasol at the 5 and Hill at the 4, with Young/Johnson at the 3, they should be able to play at a fast pace, in spurts. That said, I don’t think playing at a fast pace is in their best interests anyway. They might be more efficient offensively in the half-court.

Congratulations Kurt! This is what we were saying when d’antoni got hired

I just can’t wait to see Nick Young in that purple and gold chucking up baseline fadeaways until the cows come home!

Rambis could be coaching the Lakers by…………January, February. (He’s a PJ trojan horse). MDA might already be gone but he just doesn’t know it yet.

I agree with Rambis, but I also think there is a place for the fast paced style.

I’d like to see a quick paced offense in general. That’s not to say they need to run out for fast breaks every play, but it does mean that there should be urgency with each play. This team can be very talented in the half court offensively. They must take advantage of that, because they won’t be hanging their hats on defense this year.

I’d like to see a 2nd unit that is built for speed and running. A more typical D’Antoni style team. One that will change the tempo and game speed enough for other teams to have to change their plan.

    Example:

    Blake
    Farmar
    Johnson/Young
    Hill
    Gasol

That team can run, shoot, and play a little defense.

If D’Antoni can create a two level system like that. One that caters to each squads strengths. This could be a nice year, but he needs to change from his immediate thought of run, run, run to be successful.

If the Lakers fire MDA, would that mean they have to pay him his full salary, on top of having to pay Mike Brown’s remaining salary as well? If so, that would be a pretty big hurdle. Maybe the only reason that would keep them from firing MDA. Paying three coaches at once… Wow!

(D’Antoni voice) “Et tu Kurt … Et tu?

  • RedRum

oh oh… Aside that KR is right, we can see how this plays out, right? Pringles gets fired, KR gets the job.

hold on. Kaman is part of the second team. He’s not starting.
    .
the lineup as of today is,
Nash – Bryant – Young (maybe Johnson) – Hill – Gasol
    .
    with
    Farmar/Meeks/Johnson/Kaman/Blake off the bench.
    .
That team is pretty suited to run, if Nash is healthy, and Kobe can prove to fit in that style. (which i’m sure he can).

    Push-guard….ask blake griffin…. he’s experienced a push guard…

  • LakeShow

I didn’t say that Kaman was starting, did I?
I just gave an ideal running squad. That is all.

I thought you were listing the second unit, my bad

  • Saleem Rainman

yeah, thats a good idea. You can put Nash out there with the secodn unit for a while at a time too (cuz im willing to bet he will definitely be healthy) with a blake or farmar as well and have them run too. It should be at the very least an entertaining season.

  • LakeShow

I was listing a possible unit that would probably not happen during the first 5 to 7 mins of action.
My guess for first team is same as yours, but I don’t think anyone including D’Antoni know’s what he wants to do with the 2nd unit. I hope he utilizes all the players though instead of his usual 7 or 8 man roto. The last thing that needs to happen is Gasol, KB, and Nash averaging over 36 mpg.

  • Jacoobus

I thought we didn’t have to may Mike Brown anymore once next season starts because he has another contract with the Cavs. As I understand it once a fired coach gets a new job he no longer gets the money from his last contract.

Infact I would go as far as to say that this is the very reasoning behind bringing in Rambis. To push out D’Antoni….

  • tnrc75

D’Antoni’s such an asshat if Rambis was out there now, D’Antoni would tell him to run.

  • tnrc75

I’d LOVE Rambo to be back home, coaching…get rid of that clueless D’Antoni.

  • swaggyB

Top 5 of all time when said and done…

Jordan, Bron, Kareem, Shaq, annnnnnnd Kevin Durant (he apparently just turned 24…dang)

  • Ben Ireland

Please stop, you’re gonna make me sad. I’m terrified for this season to start if Kobe’s not ready.

like Doris explained I am amazed that someone able to earn $6607 in 1 month on the internet. did you look at this web link www.KEP2.com

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ooooh i see. idk, he might run Gasol into the ground, Kobe might run himself into the ground, and Nash might already be in the ground. Those are my concerns for LA. But if Kobe can prove to be healthy, I’m going to have them in the playoffs in my annual, nbk’s irrelevant preseason predictions comment. lol

  • LakeShow

    Those are all possibilities haha.

Summer is made for irrelevant preseason predictions.
