Nikola Pekovic Re-Signs With Timberwolves for $60 Million over 5 Years

All along, Minnesota’s front-office was confident they’d get their man, and today, they did. The Timberwolves have agreed to a reported five-year, $60 million contract extension with bruising free agent center Nikola Pekovic. Per ESPN: “I’m told Nikola Pekovic and Wolves have agreed to five-year deal worth $60 million … Sources with knowledge of deal say contract will also include up to $8 million in additional incentive-related bonuses for Pekovic.”

    about damn time

I personally don’t like him pairing with K-Love. They don’t compliment each other as well as you’d like them to for an extended pairing. They can’t win a chip with that front court.
I know they are a far way off from thinking about that, but they just solidified that it is not happening.

I could be wrong about Pek… but we’ll find out.

  • Draak Grafula

What!? I thought it was one 5y player per team… Love will be pissed if this is true.

  • Caboose

Pek just doesn’t have the footwork or defensive acumen to pair next to KLove’s non-existent post defense. Pek puts up good rebounding numbers, but he really struggles against skilled post players.

I don’t feel he’s worth 12 million.. maybe you could drop him a 10 million contract; but 12 is getting into guerenteed all-star territory, and he’s only a borderline star. I don’t know how I feel about this contract knowing how his defense is, and being paired with Love’s poor defense as well, this contract doesn’t seem right..

    Al Horford 12million
    KG 11.5million
    Joakim Noah 11.1million
    Tim Duncan 10.3million
    Anderson Varejao 8.3million
    Omer Asik 8.3million

There’s no reason why Pek should be making 12million/year.

Moving Pekovic and Martin to the Bulls for a package like Noah and Hinrich would seem to help both teams wouldn’t it? Wolves get a defensive presence in the post and the Bulls get a second and third scoring option next to Rose.

Rubio, Hinrich, Williams, Love, Noah + Shabazz, Barea, Shved, Dieng would make Playoffs in the West
Rose, Martin, Deng, Boozer, Pekovic + Butler, Gibson, Teague, Dunleavy would compete in the East.

  • Stepfan Raiford

I agree but they had to overpay him to keep K-Love happy, in order to sign K-love after his option year. Pek is a solid player when healthy.

  • LakeShow

I think the Bulls might take a step back with that one. Martin is reaching the end of his high scoring option days and Pek would ruin the Bulls defense with Boozer at the 4. Thibs would kill himself.

But I like it for the Wolves lol.

  • Stepfan Raiford

    Old but still hilarious.

  • spit hot fiyah

wow he got the 5 year deal!

serbian mafia putting pressure on flip

  • LP @ThisisEther

The Bulls want NOTHING to do with parting ways with their allstar center Noah. Unrelated, the Bulls want nothing to do with a shooting guard not named Jimmy Butler.

  • LP @ThisisEther

wow. when you put it like that….wow.

  • RKJ92

lol! never gets old though “Suuuupeeeerrrrmannnnn..”

  • RKJ92

Noah IS the Bulls, Rose might be their best player but Noah does everything that makes them a contending team. It would be SUCH a bad move to get rid of Noah.

Contracts like this is why articles like this get written http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2013/07/bad-contracts-staying-stuck-mud/

I like Pek but no. TWolves future aren’t looking as bright now.

  • Max

Then you’d have Boozer and Pek playing together.
I don’t think Thibs would even think about that one.

my thing is, this contract makes sense as long as you plan on using him for a trade when competing actually becomes a realistic option. Because as you said, him and Love don’t compliment each other at all.

Just wait until it’s time for the CBA to be renewed and the Owners will go back to their “we are bleeding money” bullsh*t.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Exactly. I almost crapped my pants when I saw that an average center like Emeka Okafor is slated to make 14.5 million this year!

  • RunNGun

Whoa! Kevin Love should be P1553D! I would pay that much for LOVE but not PEK. They’re monster together on the offensive end but on defense…

  • pposse

Noah’s response would go something like “Well, it aint Cleveland, but Minnesota still sucks!”

  • meofcourse

    he’s from montenegro…

  • LakeShow

Do they even make cars in Dee-Troit anymore?

Wow I bet this was the first offer too Smh.

  • RunNGun

Pek’s footwork and one-on-one defense isn’t bad but he’s a guy that plays underneath the rim like Love. Though the “Bruise Brothers” will dominate the offensive end, Pek’s weak help-defense combined with Love’s lack of defensive prowess will get that front court killed on the defensive end.

  • Evan Boland

Making more than Ducan, KG and Noah? Uhh..

  • Evan Boland

I like him A LOT in the 7-8 range. 9-10 is good. 12 is pushing it. A lil too much if you ask me.

  • Evan Boland

    Can anyone clarify this?

  • Evan Boland

No way am I making that trade if I’m the Bulls.

  • Evan Boland

  • RKJ92

7-8 would never happen, lol that’s a pipe dream, he’s a borderline star center, and those guys go for 9-10 million these days (on a good contract). 12 million per year is just desperate..

  • robb

    all that money for me???
