Carmelo Anthony Expects Knicks To Improve Next Season

by Leo Sepkowitz | @LeoSepkowitz

Last season, the Knicks won 54 games before getting bounced by the Pacers in the second round of the Playoffs.

Over the summer, they signed re-signed JR Smith, signed Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih, drafted Tim Hardaway Jr. and traded for Andrea Bargnani. Not everybody loved those moves. Apparently, though, Melo’s a fan of the new additions.

Per the New York Post:

“We were the top two seed last year,’’ Anthony said. “I think nobody expected that. This year we expect to do the same thing. I actually see this team be better than last year’s team. I won’t get into all the details [why]. But we feel that. We feel we have improved as a unit.”

Last season’s scoring champ also discussed the Knicks/Nets rivalry brewing in New York.

“I love it,” Anthony said. “I think it’s a great for sports. I think it’s great for us as a Knicks organization. To have somebody we can compete with on a consistent basis four times a year, I think it’s going to be the best rivalry in basketball for a long, long time.’’

The two teams will face off for the first time on December 5th in Brooklyn.

Well clearly they’d have to improve. I mean after all, the “signed re-signed JR Smith” guaranteed a championship this season.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

Well yea, it would be more news if he said they weren’t going to improve.

  • ctk

People gone have jokes n all but from a roster talent standpoint they did improve …now they got to put it on the court …People just handing these other teams higher seeds n the east ..Knicks n the same group as them fighting for 2-5 spot

  • CzechMate

If melo moves the rock around instead of once he catches it, the play stops and take a low percentage mid range shot. they could be scary, like championship scary

  • shockexchange

Notice how Melo toned down that “Championship” talk. He didn’t want to get drug tested like JR.

On paper, pending health of course, the Knicks have a solid roster. The challenge with the Knicks is going to be managing personalities and egos while keeping everyone on the same page. JR Smith and MWP are enough to make any coach crazy. Group that with a Melo/Amare duo that hasnt really worked, a defensive disaster in Bargnani and young guys like Shumpert who may not get as many mins as he’d like and you could have a problem. They have the firepower to do well but who knows what their chemistry will turn out to be

  • JibbsIsBallin

Melo has to tone that down. He has to be the leader of the team and can’t be talking crazy nonsense like Smith.

  • shockexchange

He also didn’t want to get drug tested for “talking crazy nonsense like Smith.”

” I actually see this team be better than last year’s team. I won’t get into all the details [why]. But we feel that.”

i.e. i know i’m being irrational, but i don’t want to admit that we will take a step backwards

i just can’t wait to see Andrea Melo and J.R. on the floor at the same time. atrocious D alert. this trio might be the worst defensive 2 3 and 4 combo ever.

  • danpowers

its too early to predict anything. much depends on whether bargnani can contribute and stat stay anything close to healthy. if not then the rotation is too thin against this reinforced eastern conference, it will be hard enough even if those guys contribute against miami, indiana and chicago.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i don’t see them being any better than last year no matter what happens. All those teams improved except Miami. And all New York really did was add Andrea Bargnani. Who isn’t going to make a very big difference in the W/L column no matter how productive he is.

  • LakeShow

By “not any better” i’m assuming you mean in the win column right?

As a basketball team they have probably improved a bit though.

Shump back for a whole year, Amare’ healthier than last year and addition of Bargs and MWP make them a smidge better than last year.

You’re right that they won’t improve in the W/L column, because of the Pacers, Nets, Bulls, Pistons, and Wizards improvements.

  • Evan Boland

Why do you assume Amare is healthier than last year? I can recall at the beginning of last season all the talk was that Amare was confident and his knees were healthy.

  • LakeShow

Because you can’t really get less healthy than he was last year and he’s been having very little wear on his body the last year or so.

I’m assuming he’ll get in 60+ games at 25-32 mpg.

  • straight cake

Knicks got rid of old vets who did not play many minutes for younger players who fit the system and can play more minutes and contribute to the team. They got better considering the salary cap restrictions for next season.
    Bargnani > Novak
    World Peace > Camby
    Udrih > Kidd

    - What are you really counting on from Amar’e? Please don’t tell me you expect him to play a huge chunk of the season as a truly effective player…..
    - Plus, Amar’e + Carmelo has so far =’d Mediocrity. Now they added Bargnani who is really not any better than Stoudemire when healthy…..They don’t mix at all, or they presumably don’t. The more Amar’e has played, the less effective Melo has been. In fact, over the last couple seasons, Carmelo has been much much more potent as a power forward. And they just added another one.

    - And why do you think MWP is going to make a big difference? Iman Shumpert/JR Smith/Carmelo Anthony – MWP is not going to be much more than a marketing ploy. There is nothing for him to do when games matter.
    - And how much are you expecting out of Tyson Chandler? I don’t see him topping last year or the year before that. And I don’t really feel comfortable counting on him to carry such a burden for them if Amar’e isn’t healthy.

  • straight cake

Amar’e is washed up and should retire from basketball.

  • straight cake

nbk you are one of the best commentators on SLAM but when it coms to the Knicks you lose some objectivity on these topics, but anyways Amare comes off the Bench for Melo so they are never on the floor at the same time ever and Bargnani can help stretch the floor so Power Forwards have to come out from the paint to guard him leaving the Knicks with space to shoot.

Also when it comes to Miami you think Greg Oden is going to be an effective player and play a huge chunk in the season… I doubt they repeat as champions next year even with Lebron.

  • danpowers

you posted the worst case scenario and im well aware that these aspects you mentioned can play out the way you predict it. im just hoping for chandler to stay healthy, bargnani opening up the floor for anthony for both to switch between 3 and 4 on offense, anthony to move the ball more, shumpert+martin+chandler and mwp to make up for the defensive flaws of others and that feltons loss of weight and promise to be more of a vocal leader make him a better point guard. which would alltogether be the best case scenario. they could end up as a 5th seed, but i wouldnt rule them out neither to compete for any seed between 2 and 5.

the knicks will suck this upcoming season and the only people who don’t see that are knicks fans . stop speaking about a team that went to the finals 3 str8 years and won 2 str8 championships when ny only got 1 playoff series win in that same time span.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I didn’t post a scenario…I just said why I don’t think they will actually improve on last season. They would need all of what you just said to come to fruition to improve on last year. And you posted the most optimistic hopes there can possibly be for this Knicks team, if your hopes are realistic, of course.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

do i? was i wrong last year? or the year before that? “lose some objectivity on these topics” has served me better than any of you Knicks fans so far…..so i’m good.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I actually said I don’t count on Greg Oden playing even half of the games. But way to prove that you don’t know what the f*ck you are talking about.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i have no idea why you posted this. i didn’t see it. and i’m surely not watching it.

  • LakeShow

    okie doke.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

and yes, win loss column. idk if they will technically be a better team, maybe they will. but it won’t show in the column that matters

  • straight cake

Miami was down 5 points with 28 seconds left and if Lebron and Ray Allen did not hit those lucky 3′s they would have been 1-3 in the finals.

Good luck beating Brooklyn, Indiana, and Chicago next year in the playoffs especially with the bad blood and improvements those teams made this past off-season, you can only get lucky so much…

  • straight cake

    Im trying to educate you…

  • LakeShow

I’m expecting Amare’ to play a huge chunk of the season and be a truly effective player…

Naw, not really, but as you know, I view things with a optimistic mind set.

What I said to Evan below when he asked why I felt Amare’ could be effective again is:

“Because you can’t really get less healthy than he was last year and he’s been having very little wear on his body the last year or so.

I’m assuming he’ll get in 60-ish games at 25-32 mpg.”

I’m hoping he embraces the 6th man role and gives them 12-7 in less than 30mpg.

The Knicks are a mess. But they have talent. It is not likely they make any noise in the post season, but I think they will have another successful RS.

I’m expecting Tyson to get 1 more year in of elite defense in the middle. Another 10-10-1.5 year for him.

I don’t really want to argue for the Knicks though, I just think they are at least AS GOOD of a team as they were last year. Not really arguing much more than that.

I hope they show out, but I doubt it. And I also don’t think Woodson is imaginative enough to make this team as good as it could be offensively.

  • danpowers

to me what you wrote indirectly implied the worst case scenario. and as i said: “i hope” doesnt mean i count on it. the team got slightly better compared to last year at least a little younger so hopefully a bit more durable.

its like lake show and you already wrote: it probably wont really show in the win column anyway as other teams took bigger steps forward.

  • LakeShow

    You/I= Optimist
    nbk= Pessimist

    You both could be right.

you and I are viewing it in a best case scenario, nbk is viewing it more or less the opposite.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah? by showing me a guy who got his start by writing about high school football talk to another guy who played some division 3 hoop but is on TV for his flamboyant personality?
    sure, educate me.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the worst case scenario is Carmelo getting hurt. Or JR Smith losing his mind. Or god forbid Iman Shumpert getting hurt again. The other scenarios are basically coin flips historically (throughout each guys career).

  • LakeShow

lol, I was waiting for this reply.

Don’t trot your Skippy out here. We want no part of that type of education haha.

  • danpowers

“I’m expecting Amare’ to play a huge chunk of the season and be a truly effective player…”

that would be great. but how many times did it go well with a player who has a minute restriction of 15-20mpg and most likely wont be used in back to back games? woodson already stated that by the begin of the preseason and this doesnt sound like he is going to deliver a huge chunk of the season. i hope he will, it just doesnt seem very probable.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i didn’t say they would be bad. just that they wouldn’t be better than last year. all of what you said is true, i just don’t think you are quite looking at how good they were last year. they were really good.

  • danpowers

    “they were really good.”

written by you? i just printed that screenshot out and will keep it on my desk forever lol

  • LakeShow

Did you read the next line? lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah. everyone takes what i say to the most extreme. they weren’t contenders last year, but they were still really good compared to everyone else. Those two things are separate. Also, I tend to exaggerate when I get excited, and take my own opinion a little out of context…

  • danpowers

  • danpowers

yes i did but still. how often did that go well? honestly, i cant think of any player. last time i remember that a big had restrictions like this was yao ming – the season he had to retire due to his foot lol

  • straight cake

You need to realize that the only reason Amare is still on the Knicks is because they cant trade him because of his egregious contract and they cant amnesty him, maybe Knicks management could pursue a buyout but they would be spending too much money and it would not free up cap space. He is not with the Knicks for BASKETBALL reasons that’s for sure.

  • straight cake

Knicks won 54 games and were a top 2 seed nobody not even you predicted that.

  • LakeShow

Exactly why they better try and play him!

  • danpowers

lol yup. i just referred to scenarios that assume a teams core stays more or less intact during the year. if any team loses their main / key guys all predictions and analysis are blown away anway. just imagine the heat without james, now pacers without george or bulls again without rose.

“yeah Lakeshow, they may be a 4 seed, or even 3! But still, his point remains, why does Sheed want to come back to a squad that doesn’t have a shot at the title?”
oh no, i was off by a seed. i was totally wrong, right? I mean, it’s not like they didn’t make the conference finals and were actually the 2nd best team in the conference anyway…..right?………..errr, right?

  • Lenin-Gil Phillips

I think Melo is saying,” If we don’t improve from last season I’m gone.”

  • straight cake

    Knicks dont need him though:

  • Mike From Spain

Problem with the Knicks is, Bargs has to play according to his contract and #1 draft pick expectations, in order for them to offset how much Chicago, Indiana, the Nets and the Heat have improved. Not to mention that the Heat and Indiana were already playing better playoff basketball these last playoffs.

  • LakeShow

What does an on fire team playing in the RS have anything to do with what they need to win a chip.

Common man… . They need Amare’ to step it up big time if they are going anywhere.
